An airbender who can't fight is just a monk who's really good at running away. The Air Nomads have known this for two hundred years and considered it a virtue.
Sonam, who died in the 21st century and woke up at the Southern Air Temple, knows it's a death sentence. He has twelve years before Sozin's Comet, a head full of memories from a world where this one was a TV show, and the growing suspicion that every single person he's ever met in this life is going to burn because their culture decided that fighting back was beneath them.
The temples have thirty-six tiers of airbending. He's building the thirty-seventh, and the monks would rather exile him than learn it.
