Chapter 78: A Walk Beneath the Violet Sky

Evening settled gently over Konoha.

The village had begun its nightly transformation—the harsh rhythm of training fields giving way to lantern light, laughter, and the warm smell of food drifting from restaurants and street vendors.

For once, Naruto Uzumaki was not sitting on the Hokage Monument watching the world.

Instead—

He stood awkwardly in front of a mirror.

Ayame stood behind him with her arms folded.

"No."

Naruto blinked.

"What do you mean no?"

"That jacket is banned tonight."

Naruto looked down at the familiar orange-and-black outfit in confusion.

"What's wrong with it?"

Ayame gave him a long stare.

"You have worn that exact outfit for five years."

"It's comfortable!"

"That's not the point."

Naruto scratched the back of his head.

"I don't see the problem."

Ayame sighed like a disappointed older sister.

"Tonight is a date, Naruto."

"It's not a date!" Naruto protested.

Ayame's eyebrow rose.

"Then why did you brush your hair?"

Naruto froze.

Kakashi, lounging on the couch behind them with a book in hand, lazily flipped a page.

"Caught."

Naruto groaned.

Ayame shoved a new jacket into his hands.

"Wear this."

Naruto held it up.

It was still orange.

But softer.

With white lining and black trim.

More… normal.

"My clothes aren't that bad," Naruto muttered.

"They scream chaotic gremlin."

"I do not scream gremlin!"

Iruka walked past the doorway and paused.

"You scream gremlin."

Naruto looked betrayed.

"You too, Iruka-sensei?!"

Iruka smiled kindly.

"Wear the jacket."

Naruto sighed.

"Fine…"

Five minutes later—

Naruto stepped outside.

Still orange.

Still casual.

But different.

And strangely…

He felt nervous.

Konoha Park:

The park was quiet at this hour.

Lanterns hung from the trees, casting soft pools of golden light along the paths. Crickets chirped quietly in the grass while the evening breeze carried the faint scent of sakura blossoms.

Hinata Hyuga stood waiting near the bridge.

Naruto froze for a second when he saw her.

She wasn't wearing her usual shinobi jacket.

Or her formal Hyuga attire.

Instead—

A soft violet sweater.

White skirt.

Simple.

Elegant.

Naruto suddenly forgot what words were.

Hinata smiled gently.

"Hello, Naruto-kun."

Naruto coughed awkwardly.

"H-Hey Hinata."

For a moment they both just stood there.

Then Naruto gestured nervously toward the park path.

"Uh… walk?"

Hinata nodded happily.

"Yes."

They started walking side by side beneath the lanterns.

Naruto rubbed the back of his neck.

"So… um…"

He panicked slightly.

Politics.

No.

War.

Definitely no.

Armies.

Absolutely not.

He cleared his throat.

"Training was pretty intense today."

Hinata giggled softly.

"You skipped it."

Naruto winced.

"Yeah…"

"I heard Shikamaru fainted."

Naruto blinked.

"He did?!"

Hinata nodded.

"During the third hour."

Naruto burst out laughing.

"That sounds like him!"

Hinata smiled.

"He said it was 'a strategic retreat.'"

Naruto wiped a tear from his eye.

"That guy…"

They walked a little further.

The conversation slowly became easier.

"Lee was very excited," Hinata said.

"He's always excited," Naruto replied.

"He said the weights were 'a blessing from youth.'"

Naruto shook his head.

"That man is terrifying."

Hinata laughed softly again.

It was a gentle sound.

Naruto found himself glancing at her more than once.

She looked different outside the battlefield.

Peaceful.

Relaxed.

"Did you finish that movie Sakura recommended?" Naruto asked.

Hinata nodded.

"Yes."

"What did you think?"

She thought carefully.

"It was very sad."

Naruto groaned.

"I told Sakura that!"

"Everyone died!"

Hinata smiled shyly.

"I liked the part where the hero saved the village."

Naruto scratched his cheek.

"That part was cool."

Hinata tilted her head.

"You cried though."

Naruto stopped walking.

"I did NOT cry!"

Hinata covered her mouth politely.

"Your eyes were wet."

"That was dust!"

"There was no dust."

Naruto grumbled.

"That movie was emotional sabotage."

Hinata giggled again.

They kept walking slowly through the park.

The silence between them wasn't uncomfortable.

Just warm.

Hinata glanced down at Naruto's hand once.

Just once.

Then quickly looked away.

Her cheeks were slightly pink.

Naruto noticed.

And instantly became extremely aware of his own hands.

What were they supposed to do?

Walk normally?

Swing?

Stay still?

His brain was unhelpfully blank.

So instead he said—

"Did you finish that book Kakashi recommended?"

Hinata nodded.

"The detective one?"

"Yeah!"

"It was very confusing."

Naruto brightened.

"Right?!"

"I thought the gardener did it."

Hinata shook her head.

"So did I."

They both laughed.

Behind them—

Bushes rustled.

Konohamaru crouched dramatically behind a tree.

"This is an elite reconnaissance mission."

Beside him, Moegi nodded seriously.

"Operation: Romance Surveillance."

Udon pushed his glasses up nervously.

"I feel like this might be morally questionable."

Konohamaru waved a hand.

"Nonsense."

Behind them—

Madelyne sat in the grass with her arms folded.

Her red hair glowed faintly in the lantern light.

Her expression was… dark.

Konohamaru whispered loudly,

"Status report!"

Moegi peeked over a bush.

"They're talking about books."

Konohamaru frowned.

"That's boring."

Udon sniffled.

"I think it's sweet."

Madelyne's eyes narrowed slightly as she watched Naruto walking beside Hinata.

"They should not be alone."

Konohamaru blinked.

"What?"

Madelyne leaned forward.

"Suspicious activity."

Udon blinked.

"Walking?"

"Yes."

"That's what people do."

Madelyne stared intensely.

"They might hold hands."

The entire squad gasped.

Konohamaru whispered urgently,

"Maximum alert."

Moegi nodded.

"This is serious."

Udon looked terrified.

Madelyne's fingers tightened around a tree branch.

Far ahead—

Naruto and Hinata continued walking peacefully under the lanterns.

Neither of them realized they had a surveillance team.

Or that four small ninjas were currently treating their evening stroll like a top-secret mission.

And somewhere deep inside the bushes—

Madelyne's glowing eyes followed Naruto with a quiet intensity.

Waiting.

Watching.

And very much not approving of this development.

------------------------

If the walk through Konoha Park had been peaceful—

The Akimichi restaurant was anything but quiet.

The building was famous throughout the village. Wide wooden tables filled the room, lanterns hanging low above them, and the smell of grilled meat, fresh rice, and sweet pastries floated through the warm air.

It was the kind of place where nobody left hungry.

Which made it perfect.

And dangerous.

Naruto realized that the moment he stepped inside.

Heads turned.

Whispers began.

"…Is that—"

"…Naruto-sama…"

"…Is that Lady Hinata?"

"…Are they—"

Naruto scratched the back of his neck awkwardly as he and Hinata sat down at a table near the window.

He was used to whispers.

He had grown up with them.

Once they had been cruel.

Now they were curious.

But either way, they didn't bother him much anymore.

Hinata, however, looked slightly embarrassed.

Her fingers folded politely in her lap as the waiter approached.

"What would you like to order?"

Naruto grinned.

"Everything."

The waiter blinked.

Hinata smiled softly.

"We'll start with these," she said politely, handing back the menu after circling half the page.

Naruto stared.

"…Start?"

Hinata tilted her head.

"Yes."

Naruto slowly nodded.

"Right."

Ten minutes later—

The food began arriving.

Plates.

Bowls.

Steaming baskets.

Naruto blinked.

Then blinked again.

Then watched in amazement.

Hinata began eating.

Gracefully.

Delicately.

Efficiently.

But a lot.

Naruto stared.

He had always imagined Hinata eating tiny portions like a delicate princess.

But the reality was something very different.

Hinata was quietly demolishing plate after plate with elegant precision.

Naruto leaned forward slightly.

"…Hinata."

"Yes, Naruto-kun?"

"You eat more than me."

Hinata froze.

Her cheeks turned bright red.

"…I do?"

Naruto pointed at the empty plates.

"There were eight dumplings."

"Yes…"

"They're gone."

Hinata looked down at her hands shyly.

"…I was hungry."

Naruto suddenly grinned.

"I like it."

Hinata blinked.

Naruto leaned back in his chair.

"Everyone always assumes I'm the only one who eats like that."

Hinata laughed softly.

"I suppose I surprised you."

"You did!"

Naruto grabbed another dumpling happily.

"And you eat way more neatly than me."

Hinata tilted her head.

Naruto looked down at his own plate.

Sauce.

Crumbs.

Chaos.

He scratched his cheek awkwardly.

"My table manners kinda suck."

Hinata shook her head gently.

"I think they're honest."

Naruto blinked.

"Honest?"

"Yes."

She smiled warmly.

"You enjoy food."

Naruto laughed.

"That's true."

They continued eating while the quiet murmur of the restaurant surrounded them.

Outside the window, lantern light flickered across the street.

Naruto leaned forward slightly.

"So what's your favorite food?"

Hinata answered without hesitation.

"Cinnamon rolls."

Naruto blinked.

"That's random."

Hinata smiled shyly.

"My mother used to make them."

Naruto's expression softened.

"Well now I gotta try them."

Moments later—

A plate arrived.

Naruto took a bite.

Then froze.

His eyes widened.

"…Hinata."

"Yes?"

"These are amazing."

Hinata giggled.

"I told you."

Naruto took another bite immediately.

"Ramen is still number one though."

"Of course."

Naruto leaned back happily.

"Ramen is eternal."

Hinata nodded solemnly.

"Yes."

For a moment they simply enjoyed the food.

Then Naruto asked casually,

"So… did the Hyuga finish developing that technique?"

Hinata paused mid-bite.

"You mean the one you suggested?"

"Yeah."

"The long-range Gentle Fist idea."

Hinata nodded.

"We completed the prototype."

Naruto leaned forward immediately.

"Seriously?!"

"Yes."

She wiped her hands neatly with a napkin.

"We call it the Hyuga Arrow."

Naruto's eyes sparkled.

"That sounds cool."

Hinata explained calmly.

Naruto laughed.

"That's awesome!"

Hinata continued.

"It can incapacitate someone from several miles away."

Naruto nearly choked on his cinnamon roll.

"Several miles?!"

Hinata nodded.

"However…"

She raised three fingers.

"We can only fire three to five shots before exhausting ourselves."

Naruto leaned back impressed.

"That's still insane."

Hinata smiled shyly.

"It still needs refinement."

Naruto shook his head.

"The Hyuga clan just invented chakra sniping."

Hinata giggled again.

Outside the Window

Behind a nearby stall—

Four tiny spies crouched dramatically.

Konohamaru adjusted imaginary binoculars.

"Status report."

Moegi peeked around the corner.

"They're eating."

Konohamaru frowned.

"That's boring."

Udon sniffled quietly.

"I think it's romantic."

Madelyne sat behind them with her arms folded.

Her glowing eyes watched Naruto carefully.

Moegi whispered,

"They're just talking."

Konohamaru nodded.

"So this is actually just a friend gathering."

Udon sighed in relief.

"Good."

Madelyne tilted her head slightly.

She had been watching carefully.

At first she had felt something unpleasant twisting in her chest.

But now she understood it.

Jealousy.

She didn't like Naruto spending time alone with other girls.

But she wasn't sure if that meant love.

Or simply…

That she didn't want to share him.

Madelyne rested her chin on her hand thoughtfully.

"Well," she muttered quietly.

"It's not that bad."

Konohamaru nodded.

"Yeah."

"Operation date surveillance concluded."

Madelyne watched Naruto laughing through the window.

Her expression softened slightly.

Things had calmed down.

This was fine.

Nothing strange was happening.

Everything was normal.

Then—

Inside the restaurant—

Hinata suddenly looked at Naruto.

"May I see your hand?"

Naruto blinked.

"…My hand?"

"Yes."

He shrugged and held it out.

Hinata gently took it in both of hers.

Her fingers were warm.

She examined his palm carefully.

Naruto's brain stopped working.

Hinata spoke softly.

"They're very soft."

Naruto blinked.

"…What?"

Hinata looked slightly surprised.

"You train so harshly."

"But your hands are smooth."

Naruto scratched his cheek awkwardly.

"Uh… healing factor."

"My body resets itself."

Hinata smiled gently.

"That's amazing."

Outside the window—

Konohamaru's jaw dropped.

Moegi gasped.

Udon fainted slightly.

Madelyne blinked.

Then blinked again.

She stared at Naruto's hand in Hinata's.

Then slowly leaned back.

"…Hmph."

She crossed her arms.

"I hold his hands all the time."

Konohamaru whispered dramatically,

"She's touching the hero!"

Madelyne lifted her chin proudly.

"That means nothing."

She smirked slightly.

"I am still superior."

---------------------------

Elsewhere:

The newest Akimichi restaurant sat high above Konoha like a quiet balcony to the world.

Built into the upper slope near the Hokage Monument, it overlooked the entire village—lanterns glowing along the streets, rooftops bathed in amber light, and the distant forest forming a dark ring around the peaceful town.

At this height, the air was cooler.

And the conversations were softer.

Sakura, Ino, and Rogue sat at a round wooden table near the railing. Plates of food were scattered across the table, though the three women were mostly picking at them rather than eating seriously.

Training days had a way of draining enthusiasm for heavy meals.

Ino leaned back in her chair dramatically.

"I swear," she groaned, stretching her arms, "if this training continues for another month my figure is going to become completely muscular."

Sakura blinked.

"That's not a bad thing."

"It is when you want to wear dresses."

Rogue raised an eyebrow.

"You can't wear dresses with muscles?"

"You can," Ino said, waving her hand, "but it changes the whole aesthetic."

Sakura laughed softly.

"I never thought I'd hear you worry about something like that."

"Well excuse me for wanting to look elegant," Ino sniffed.

She glanced down at the simple training clothes she had been wearing for days.

"And another thing—we are constantly dressed like construction workers now."

Rogue chuckled.

"You mean combat ready."

"Exactly! I haven't worn anything cute in a week."

Sakura shrugged.

"Honestly I don't even notice anymore."

Ino pointed accusingly.

"That's because you're a workaholic."

Sakura looked mildly offended.

"I am not."

"You absolutely are."

Rogue leaned back in her chair, watching the two with quiet amusement.

"You shinobi live very intense lives."

Ino scoffed.

"You should see our childhood."

Sakura nodded.

"This is actually the calm part."

Rogue laughed softly.

"Well at least the training is working."

She flexed her fingers thoughtfully.

"I can feel my control improving."

Sakura nodded.

"You're stabilizing your power faster than expected."

Rogue smiled faintly.

"That's thanks to both of you."

She tapped her temple.

"Ino helped organize my mind."

Ino grinned proudly.

"World-class mental therapy."

"And Sakura helped me understand my body better."

Sakura shrugged modestly.

"Medical analysis."

Rogue leaned forward slightly.

"And the biggest improvement…"

Her expression softened.

"…is that I finally know which thoughts are mine."

The other two girls watched her carefully.

"For years," Rogue continued quietly, "my mind was like a crowded room."

"Voices."

"Memories."

"Fragments from everyone I touched."

She took a slow breath.

"But now…"

She tapped her head again.

"There's space."

Sakura smiled warmly.

"That's good."

Rogue nodded.

"And Ino even removed some of the useless memories."

Ino waved casually.

"Mostly old junk."

"Bad TV shows."

"Random grocery lists."

Rogue laughed.

"You saved me from a lot of nonsense."

Sakura tilted her head.

"What about you, Ino?"

"How's your training?"

Ino's eyes sparkled.

"My mental clone library is expanding."

Sakura sighed.

"That sounds terrifying."

"It's amazing."

Ino leaned forward excitedly.

"I'm learning how to control the mental battlefield properly."

"Before I tried overpowering people."

"But now—"

She tapped the table dramatically.

"Traps."

"Maze structures."

"Layered illusions."

"Psychological ambushes."

Rogue whistled.

"That's scary."

"Thank you."

"And Sakura?"

Rogue asked.

"How's your research going?"

Sakura's expression shifted slightly.

She leaned back in her chair.

"I'm learning how viral systems behave."

"Replication patterns."

"Transmission speed."

"Cellular invasion."

Ino grimaced.

"That sounds creepy."

Sakura nodded.

"It is."

"But it's necessary."

She folded her arms.

"Right now I'm working on minor viruses."

"Flu."

"Cold."

"Nothing dangerous."

"Yet."

Rogue studied her carefully.

"You're building weapons."

Sakura didn't deny it.

"Yes."

Silence lingered for a moment.

Then—

Ino suddenly clapped her hands.

"Okay!"

The other two blinked.

"What?" Sakura asked.

"We've talked about training long enough."

Rogue narrowed her eyes suspiciously.

"That tone means trouble."

Ino grinned mischievously.

"Let's talk about something exciting."

Sakura sighed.

"I already regret this."

"Love lives."

Sakura immediately reached for her drink.

Rogue laughed.

Ino leaned back dramatically.

"I swear, I haven't even had time to look at guys recently."

"That's because you're constantly training."

"Still," Ino said with a sigh, "a girl has needs."

Rogue chuckled.

"Well my situation is slightly different."

Ino raised an eyebrow.

"Oh?"

Rogue shrugged casually.

"I spend most of my time with Naruto and Peter."

Sakura glanced up briefly.

"And?"

"And training."

Rogue smiled faintly.

"Learning control over my powers is my main priority."

Her voice softened slightly.

"But once I can touch people without killing them…"

She shrugged.

"…I would love to experience a normal love life."

Ino nodded sympathetically.

"That seems fair."

Then both girls slowly turned toward Sakura.

Sakura suddenly found the table very interesting.

Ino narrowed her eyes.

"You're doing it again."

Sakura blinked.

"Doing what?"

"Deflecting."

"I'm not—"

"Sakura."

Ino leaned forward slightly.

"You're waiting."

Sakura froze.

"…Waiting for what?"

Ino raised an eyebrow.

"Just like you waited for him."

Sakura's voice stiffened.

"I don't know what you're talking about."

Ino sighed.

"Sakura."

Her voice softened slightly.

"I know you've moved on to Naruto."

Sakura looked away.

"That's not—"

"And there's nothing wrong with that."

Ino continued calmly.

"And it's obvious he still cares about you."

Sakura's fingers tightened around her glass.

"So why don't you just make it happen?"

Sakura didn't answer.

The silence stretched.

Finally Rogue leaned forward slightly.

"What's stopping you?"

Sakura's voice was very quiet.

"I'm afraid."

Both girls went still.

Sakura continued slowly.

"When I actively pursued Sasuke…"

Her eyes lowered.

"…he left."

Silence hung heavy over the table.

"Naruto," Sakura continued softly, "has always been there."

Her voice trembled slightly.

"What if he leaves too?"

Ino's expression softened.

Sakura swallowed.

"What if that's not what he wants?"

"What if saying it out loud ruins everything?"

Her shoulders sagged slightly.

"I don't want to lose him."

The two girls exchanged glances.

Rogue spoke first.

"You can't control love."

Sakura looked at her.

"It happens."

Rogue's eyes darkened slightly.

"And the only choice you really have… is whether you act on it."

She leaned back slowly.

"Sitting still won't protect you."

Her voice softened.

"Regret is much harder to live with."

For a moment Sakura saw something deep in Rogue's eyes.

Something old.

Something painful.

Rogue thought of the many boys she had liked.

The many chances she had never taken.

Because her touch meant death.

Ino gently placed her hand on Sakura's arm.

"Sakura."

Her voice was warm.

"Since when do you back down from things?"

Sakura didn't answer.

Ino smiled slightly.

"You're the girl who punched her way through the Chunin Exams."

"You're the girl who trained under Tsunade."

"You're the girl who saved Naruto more times than I can count."

She squeezed Sakura's arm lightly.

"So don't become the girl you used to be."

Her smile sharpened slightly.

"Live fully."

"That's what I believe."

"And that's what I taught you."

Sakura sat quietly.

The fear didn't vanish.

Not completely.

But it loosened.

Just a little.

She looked at the two women sitting beside her.

Her friends.

Her support.

Maybe she didn't have the courage yet.

But she had something almost as good.

People standing beside her.

And sometimes…

That was enough to take the first step.
