Chapter 1 - Prologue

Light. Dark. The universe is not simple, not even for a second. Days and days ahead we wander through the tunnels of time, bringing us to various moments in our lives. This moment is exactly that.

The barren battlefield is filled with screams. I stand here looking at the swirl of black that approaches to ensnare my vision. In the center stood a girl in a cloak with dark brown hair, eyes pitch black, and a shade of red amber like mine. I start to sprint in the darkness. My blazing blade is my only light.

Steel meets steel. Metal upon metal.

I could feel the soles of my feet start to sink into the ground. My body was starting to get heavy against the pressure the girl was exerting.

Ignite.

Blaze forward.

I can do it.

Just then a bolt of lightning flashes overhead. A girl with golden brown hair drops from the sky. Her purple-pink eyes were emitting spark trails as she slammed to the ground.

She smiles as she bows.

"Am I late? Sara Knight, your partner, has arrived."

The ship she dropped from is currently in a dogfight overhead. Lasers continue to rain upon each other as both ships descend to the ground, screeching.

I focus back to blazing at the girl in the cloak. Sara joins in my blitz, blade raised.

Awaken.

Burst.

Limit Break.

Surge.

Exceed.

Charged.

OVERLOAD!

My sword's flames soon go from red to blazing blue to silver. The girl in the darkness beckons us forward with her index finger.

[Come] She beckons in our minds.

As I sprint forward, I catch a glimpse of my glowing eyes from a puddle from yesterday's rain. They were aflame and bright red, slowly turning silver. Despite the heat, they were crying. Quite unfortunate circumstances brought me here.

The girl exerts pressure once again. Both Sara and I are thrown a foot back. I root my feet and my sword into the ground to avoid any more knockbacks.

"Will! Are you alright?!" Sara screams.

I look back and nod with a grimace.

This wasn't the typical enemy. This was the final boss. Despite this fact, I never want my blade to hit its mark.

Because I never want to lose her again.

***

Cough.

Cough.

I wake up sitting in bed and slump back. It's the fifth time this month I've woken up like this.

Mom calls from downstairs. "Will, it's time to get up or you'll be late for the entrance ceremony. Your sister doesn't want to be late."

"I'm up. I'm up."

I pull myself off the bed and look at myself in the bathroom mirror. These dreams felt so real. Every time I woke up, it was before I could see the girl's face under the cloak. The cold dull glow of her eyes were etched into my mind, never fading.

Whispers in the air lick my mind and I try to ignore them.

I say goodbye to my mom and walk with my sister out the door.

But before my foot was out the door. My mom whispers into my ear. "Please stay safe."

I can't.
