"Mother, you already know what I think about that," he started.
"Of course, darling, I support you in… in all your choices. Naturally. That's what good mothers do. I only want the best for you. Someone worthy of your station. Someone with stability." She interrupted him, clearly cutting him off because she didn't want him to finish the sinful words he would have said aloud.
She said it as if reading off an investment portfolio. "Now, shush, the food is almost here."
Stacey turned to look and saw that there was no waiter in sight.
