"I happened to hear that Grandmother recently gifted you a significant amount of money." Bai Chunhua said, her voice soft as she finally revealed the true motive behind her visit.
"Oh... is that so?" Bai Xifeng replied, immediately catching the scent of the trap. She knew exactly why this bitch had summoned her now. "You're right. I did receive a payment from the Old Madam. It was simply the backdated allowance that I am owed."
Bai Chunhua had heard the details from her mother earlier that morning. Since Bai Xifeng had not received a single copper of her allowance for several years, the lump sum must have been quite substantial. The mere thought of it made Bai Chunhua's fingers itch with greed.
"Third Sister, surely a girl like you should not be wandering around with such a large amount of wealth? It's far too much for you to manage alone." Bai Chunhua said, her tone dripping with the feigned concern of a loving older sister. "You really ought to let someone more experienced take care of those funds for you."
It was a blatant attempt to covet Bai Xifeng's property, and she wasn't even being subtle about it.
"If you're too shy to ask the elders, you could always entrust the money to me. I would be more than happy to deposit it into the Tongyuan Bank under my protection." Bai Chunhua suggested, trying her best to sound persuasive.
Bai Xifeng was many things, but an idiot was not one of them. How could she not guess the predatory thoughts swirling in Bai Chunhua's mind? It was as clear as a mountain stream. Chunhua was aiming for her gold. As a self-proclaimed money-grubber who valued every coin, Xifeng had no intention of letting that happen.
"There is absolutely no need for such a generous offer. I am perfectly capable of managing my own money myself. Is that clear?" Bai Xifeng replied, her smile not reaching her eyes.
In truth, she had no need for a bank. She had the mirror world at her disposal, which was a far more secure vault than any human institution. Keeping her treasures inside her soul-bound mirror was the ultimate security measure.
"Third Sister... do you truly not believe me? Your own sister?" Bai Chunhua asked, her lower lip trembling as if she were deeply hurt.
Bai Xifeng practically felt her eyes do a full 360-degree rotation. 'I'd be more likely to eat dirt than to believe a single word coming out of your mouth.'
"Third Sister, I understand... you must be bitter because I am now with His Highness, the Crown Prince." Bai Chunhua said, shifting tactics. She let out a long, dramatic sigh, pretending to be burdened by the tragedy of their love.
"If you already knew it would make me bitter, then why did you go behind my back and do it?" Bai Xifeng asked flatly.
"You must understand, Sister, that His Highness has always harbored a strong dislike for you. It was inevitable." Bai Chunhua tried to explain, her voice sounding sickeningly sweet.
"Yeah, yeah... I get it. You have already stolen my fiancé. If I let you 'protect' my money too, I'll be left with absolutely nothing." Bai Xifeng countered.
"Third Sister, please! I am not 'stealing' His Highness from you." Bai Chunhua protested.
Internally, however, her thoughts were much viler. 'Yes, I stole him. So what? You should take a long look in the mirror. How could a man as brilliant as the Crown Prince ever settle for a pathetic piece of trash like you?'
