War was essentially about logistics. In the absence of any water or food supplies, a unit could maintain its combat effectiveness in the wild for no more than three days, but typically, after just one day, morale would start to drop, stamina would decline, and so on. Going without supplies for more than three days would seriously lower morale, and there would be some low-level troops deserting.
