The high, narrow stained-glass windows of the Sun Council Hall didn't filter the sun anymore.
They bled a bruised, sickening violet light onto the flagstones. Outside, the purple moon hung like a bloated, infected eye, and with every passing minute, I could feel low vibrations in my teeth—the unnatural resonance of the city's defensive gates warping and cracking under the moon's celestial pressure.
We had survived two waves. Two agonizing, blood-soaked assaults that had left the outer rings of Thann's End screaming, the gutters choked with black monster bile and the bodies of conscripted smallfolk.
My gambeson was still stiff with dried sweat and someone else's blood, the skin across my knuckles split open from a desperate shield-bash hours earlier.
