"Oh, Claire, I'm so sorry," Isabella whimpered. "I wasn't watching where I was going."
Of course it would be her. Her plan to make Claire look like an idiot wearing a sparkly gold dress to a black and white ball had failed but she had to come through somehow.
The bottom of her dress had been splashed with red wine but none of the glass shards had managed to cut her feet because she had been whisked out of the way at the last second. Alex had noticed she was in danger and chose to intervene.
The real question was how he knew she would get hurt if she didn't move. Even if he saw Isabella walk over, he couldn't have possibly known her intentions at a glance.
"It's fine," Claire said with a false smile on her face. "Everyone has their klutzy moments."
Alex's arm was still around her waist protectively from his motion to get her out of the way. He didn't seem to realize he was doing anything weird but all of the socialites were peering at him with interest.
