Chapter 257 - The Guardian

Chapter 257 — The Guardian

The first warning was the silence.

Not the silence they had grown used to in Eden.

This was different.

The birds stopped.

Then the insects.

Then the wind.

Brook noticed first because he had been walking at the front.

He stopped.

Behind him, Henry nearly walked into him again.

"Please stop doing that."

Brook looked ahead.

"Something's wrong."

Henry followed his gaze.

"I don't see anything."

"That's the problem."

Crowley came up beside them.

Sera and Gabriel followed.

Tala remained a little farther back, one hand resting against the earth.

She looked toward the trees.

"They're gone."

Henry frowned.

"Who?"

"Everything."

That made him stop joking.

The road ahead was still there.

White dirt.

Grey grass.

A line of trees in the distance.

Nothing moved.

No leaves.

No birds.

No insects.

No branches shifting.

Even the shadows beneath the trees looked still.

Gabriel stared at the forest.

"I remember this part."

Crowley glanced at him.

"That's encouraging."

"No."

Gabriel's voice was quiet.

"It isn't."

Brook looked at him.

"What is it?"

Gabriel didn't answer.

The ground trembled.

Once.

Not enough to knock anyone off balance.

Just enough to make the pebbles beneath their boots jump.

Tala closed her eyes.

Her face tightened.

"It's awake."

Sera looked at her.

"What is?"

Tala opened her eyes.

"I don't know."

A second tremor came.

Stronger.

The distant trees bent.

Not from wind.

They bent toward the road.

Henry stepped backward.

Charon formed a shield.

"That's not natural."

Crowley drew his weapon.

"In Eden, that's a meaningless sentence."

The ground split.

A root burst through.

Then another.

Then another.

The trees began moving.

Their trunks twisted.

Branches folded inward.

Roots dragged themselves across the earth.

The entire forest seemed to be standing up.

Sera's hand rose.

"Don't cast yet."

Henry looked at her.

"Why?"

"Because we don't know what we're fighting."

Crowley glanced at the forest.

"I'd say we're fighting the forest."

"No."

Tala's voice was barely audible.

"Not the forest."

Something stepped between the trees.

It was tall.

Too tall.

Its body looked as if it had been assembled from bark, bone, and white stone.

There was no face.

Only a smooth head with a single vertical crack running down the center.

Its arms were long enough to reach the ground.

Roots hung from its shoulders like hair.

It stopped.

The earth beneath its feet went still.

Gabriel whispered,

"Guardian."

Crowley looked at him.

"You sure?"

Gabriel nodded.

"That's one."

"One?"

Gabriel didn't answer.

The Guardian lifted one arm.

The road disappeared.

Not exploded.

Not destroyed.

It simply folded downward.

A section of earth sank into itself.

Henry jumped back.

Charon stretched into four arms and grabbed him.

"Move!"

Henry stumbled away.

Sera shouted,

"Left!"

Everyone moved.

The ground collapsed where they had been standing.

Brook jumped across the widening gap.

Michael's presence stirred inside him.

Mark.

Brook ignored it.

He didn't have one.

The last mark had been spent saving Tala.

He landed hard.

The Guardian moved.

It didn't run.

It didn't need to.

One moment it was fifty feet away.

The next it was standing between Brook and the others.

Brook raised his weapon.

The Guardian struck.

Brook blocked.

The impact drove him backward.

His boots tore through the ground.

He twisted, redirected the force, and swung at its neck.

The blade connected.

A crack appeared.

Nothing else.

The Guardian turned its head.

Brook's stomach tightened.

"That's not good."

The Guardian's arm came around.

Brook ducked.

The blow shattered the tree behind him.

Wood exploded across the road.

Brook rolled beneath the second strike and came up behind it.

He drove his weapon into the crack in its neck.

The Guardian staggered.

"Now!"

Sera raised her hand.

"BREAK."

The Word struck.

The Guardian stopped.

For half a second.

Then the word shattered.

Sera's eyes widened.

"It resisted."

Crowley stepped forward.

"Then make it resist something else."

Sera fired another Word.

"BURN."

Nothing.

"FALL."

Nothing.

"STOP."

The Guardian kept moving.

Sera's breathing changed.

"That shouldn't be possible."

Crowley moved beside her.

"Try something that doesn't tell it what to do."

She looked at him.

"What?"

"Something it already understands."

Sera stared at the Guardian.

Then she understood.

"CUT."

The Word struck.

The Guardian's arm split.

It recoiled.

Crowley smiled.

"There."

Sera looked at him.

"You're becoming useful."

"I've always been useful."

"Don't ruin the moment."

The Guardian roared.

It was not a sound.

It was pressure.

The air compressed.

Henry dropped to one knee.

Charon spread over him like armor.

Gabriel staggered.

Brook felt something slam against his chest.

He flew backward.

He hit the ground hard enough to lose his breath.

"Tala!"

Henry shouted.

She had been thrown across the road.

She landed on her shoulder.

Sera ran toward her.

The Guardian moved.

Crowley intercepted it.

He swung once.

The Guardian blocked.

Crowley swung again.

The Guardian caught his wrist.

For the first time, Crowley's expression changed.

Not fear.

Recognition.

"You're stronger than the others."

The Guardian tightened its grip.

Crowley's arm cracked.

He smiled.

"That's rude."

Hellfire flashed across his free hand.

The Guardian recoiled.

Crowley pulled his arm free.

The wound healed slowly.

Not instantly.

Sera saw it.

She didn't comment.

Crowley didn't either.

The Guardian turned toward Henry.

Henry stood.

Charon wrapped around his arms.

"Ready?"

Henry swallowed.

"No."

"Excellent."

They charged.

Henry's sword struck the Guardian's leg.

Charon formed a hammer and hit the same point.

The Guardian staggered.

Henry stumbled.

"Four-second light!"

A small light formed.

One.

Two.

Three.

Four.

It went out.

Henry stared at his hand.

"Oh, come on!"

Charon yelled,

"FOUR SECONDS IS STILL FOUR SECONDS!"

The Guardian swung.

Henry barely blocked.

The impact sent him flying.

Brook caught him.

"Got you."

Henry coughed.

"I'm starting to dislike being caught."

"Then stop falling."

"I'm trying!"

Brook looked toward the Guardian.

It was coming again.

Too fast.

Brook shoved Henry aside.

The Guardian's fist hit Brook's chest.

Pain exploded through him.

He flew backward.

The world spun.

He hit the ground.

His weapon landed several feet away.

The Guardian walked toward him.

Brook tried to stand.

His body didn't respond.

Not quickly enough.

The Guardian raised its arm.

Then stopped.

Tala screamed.

"NO!"

The earth moved.

Roots erupted between them.

Not attacking.

Blocking.

The Guardian's hand struck the roots.

The roots held.

Tala stood several yards away, one hand pressed into the ground.

Her face was pale.

"Stop."

The word wasn't magical.

It wasn't Sera's Word Magic.

It was simply Tala asking.

The Guardian turned toward her.

The roots tightened.

Tala's knees buckled.

Sera ran to her.

"Tala!"

"I can't hold it."

"You don't have to."

"Yes."

Tala's voice shook.

"It doesn't listen to me."

"Then why is it stopping?"

Tala looked toward the Guardian.

"I don't know."

The ground beneath her fingers trembled.

She closed her eyes.

"Please."

Nothing.

The Guardian pushed against the roots.

Tala's breath caught.

The earth cracked around her.

Brook forced himself upright.

"Tala!"

She looked at him.

"I can't make it fight."

"What?"

"The Earth."

She swallowed.

"It won't fight for me."

The Guardian broke through one root.

Tala stumbled.

Sera grabbed her.

Crowley shouted,

"Everyone move!"

The Guardian charged.

Crowley met it.

He blocked the first strike.

Then the second.

Then the third.

Each impact drove him backward.

Gabriel joined him.

Light erupted from his hands.

The Guardian took the blast.

Gabriel slammed into it.

The Guardian caught him.

"Gabriel!"

Brook ran.

The Guardian threw Gabriel aside.

He crashed into a stone pillar.

The sound made Henry flinch.

Gabriel didn't get up.

Sera's face changed.

"Gabriel!"

The Guardian turned.

Its attention shifted toward her.

Crowley saw it.

He grabbed Sera by the arm.

"Move."

"Gabriel—"

"Move!"

"He's down!"

"I know!"

Crowley pulled her away.

Henry stood beside them.

"What are we doing?"

"Getting out."

"We can't leave him."

"We aren't."

Crowley pointed.

"Henry, take Sera."

"What?"

"Get her moving."

Sera stared at him.

"And you?"

"I'll get Gabriel."

The Guardian came through the trees.

Crowley looked at Henry.

"Go."

Henry hesitated.

Then Charon wrapped around Sera's waist.

"I've got her."

Crowley nodded.

"Good."

Henry grabbed Sera's hand.

"Come on."

She resisted.

"Henry—"

"We come back."

Crowley looked at them.

"That's an order."

Henry pulled Sera away.

They ran.

The Guardian followed.

Crowley stood between them.

"Not yet."

The Guardian struck.

Crowley blocked.

The impact cracked the ground beneath him.

He slid backward.

Another strike.

He blocked again.

His boots dug into the earth.

"Come on."

The Guardian hit him again.

Crowley's shoulder dropped.

He countered with Hellfire.

The Guardian recoiled.

Crowley stepped forward.

"Stay away from them."

The Guardian didn't listen.

It attacked.

Crowley fought.

Not like a demon king.

Not like a warrior trying to prove something.

Like a man buying time.

One step.

One block.

One strike.

One step.

The Guardian's arm caught him across the ribs.

Crowley flew sideways.

He landed on one knee.

Blood ran from his mouth.

He wiped it away.

"Still got it."

Then the Guardian was above him.

Crowley raised his weapon.

Too slow.

The strike came down.

The earth rose.

A wall of roots exploded between them.

The Guardian's fist slammed into it.

Crowley stared.

Tala stood behind the roots.

Her hands were buried in the soil.

She was shaking.

"I said stop."

The Guardian froze.

Not because she commanded it.

Because the earth had decided the blow would not land.

Tala's eyes opened.

She looked terrified.

"It's not listening to me."

Crowley slowly stood.

"No."

He looked at the roots.

"It's listening to itself."

Tala looked at him.

Crowley pointed toward the others.

"Can you hold it?"

"I don't know."

"Try."

She closed her eyes.

The roots tightened.

The Guardian pushed.

The entire field trembled.

Tala screamed.

The roots began breaking.

Crowley looked toward Henry and Sera.

They were almost out.

Gabriel still hadn't moved.

Brook was dragging himself toward him.

Crowley swore.

"Brook!"

Brook looked over.

"Get Gabriel."

"I will."

"Now."

Brook ran.

The Guardian broke through the roots.

Tala collapsed.

Crowley caught her.

"Move!"

He lifted her.

Tala's head rested against his shoulder.

"I can't hear it."

"What?"

"The Earth."

Crowley looked at her.

She was crying.

"I can't hear it."

Crowley tightened his grip.

"Then we'll listen for you."

He ran.

Behind them, the Guardian followed.

Brook reached Gabriel.

He was conscious.

Barely.

"Can you stand?"

Gabriel opened one eye.

"Probably."

"That's not an answer."

"It is the best one I have."

Brook pulled him up.

Gabriel's weight leaned heavily against him.

The Guardian roared behind them.

Brook looked back.

It was coming.

Fast.

Too fast.

Then Henry shouted from ahead.

"Brook!"

Brook looked.

Henry stood at the edge of the trees.

Sera beside him.

Charon had formed a giant hand around both of them.

"COME ON!"

Brook pulled Gabriel forward.

Crowley carried Tala.

The group ran.

The Guardian gained on them.

Twenty feet.

Fifteen.

Ten.

Sera turned.

"Word—"

Crowley shouted,

"No!"

Sera stopped.

"If it doesn't work—"

"Then we're dead faster."

She lowered her hand.

They kept running.

The forest ended.

The road opened.

The Guardian stopped at the edge.

Nobody had to tell them why.

It wouldn't cross.

Brook turned.

The Guardian stood among the trees.

Silent.

Watching.

Tala lifted her head from Crowley's shoulder.

She looked at it.

Then at the earth.

The Guardian lowered its arm.

The ground beneath it settled.

Brook breathed hard.

Henry dropped onto the road.

Charon collapsed beside him.

Sera sat down.

Gabriel remained standing only because Brook held him.

Crowley lowered Tala carefully.

Nobody spoke.

For several seconds, the only sound was breathing.

Then Henry said,

"I hate Eden."

Charon raised one hand.

"Agreed."

Sera laughed once.

It sounded exhausted.

Crowley looked toward the forest.

The Guardian was gone.

Not dead.

Gone.

Brook wiped blood from his mouth.

"What was that?"

Gabriel looked at the trees.

"A guardian."

Crowley glanced at him.

"You've said that."

Gabriel nodded.

"I know."

Brook waited.

Gabriel looked at him.

"I didn't say they were friendly."

Nobody answered.

Tala sat with her back against a stone.

Sera crouched beside her.

"You saved us."

Tala shook her head.

"No."

She looked toward the forest.

"Something saved us."

Sera followed her gaze.

"What?"

Tala didn't know.

She pressed her palm against the ground.

For a long moment, nothing happened.

Then the soil shifted beneath her fingers.

A tiny movement.

Almost like a breath.

Tala closed her eyes.

She didn't smile.

But she stopped shaking.

Across the road, Crowley sat beside Brook.

Brook's ribs hurt.

His shoulder hurt.

His pride hurt more.

Crowley looked at him.

"You alive?"

"Yes."

"Good."

Brook looked toward Gabriel.

"He nearly died."

Crowley nodded.

"Yes."

"I couldn't get to him."

"You did."

"Not fast enough."

Crowley studied him.

"You don't get to save everyone."

Brook looked at him.

Crowley leaned back against the stone.

"Believe me."

Brook didn't answer.

Crowley looked toward the forest.

The silence returned.

After a while, Gabriel finally spoke.

"I know why it stopped."

Everyone looked at him.

Gabriel looked at Tala.

"The Earth refused the fight."

Tala frowned.

"I didn't ask it to fight."

"I know."

Gabriel looked toward the place where the Guardian had disappeared.

"That is why it listened."

Brook stared at the forest.

He didn't understand.

Not completely.

But he understood one thing.

The Guardian had not been defeated.

It had simply decided they were allowed to leave.

For now.

Henry leaned against Charon.

"So…"

He lifted one hand.

A tiny light appeared.

One second.

Two.

Three.

Four.

It vanished.

Henry stared at his palm.

"Still four."

Brook laughed.

This time, nobody missed it.
