Chapter 291 — The Coat
They did not stop when the ridge disappeared.
They kept running.
Brook's breathing had become a harsh rhythm.
In.
Pain.
Out.
Pain.
His knee dragged slightly on the downhill.
Sera noticed.
She didn't say anything.
She knew he would ignore her.
Henry ran beside him.
His light flickered around his fingers.
Not enough to illuminate the road.
Just enough to keep him from tripping over the stones.
Hutena stayed ahead with Tala.
The book was still closed.
Still in her hands.
Still theirs.
Crowley ran at the rear.
Gabriel was beside him.
Athena took the front.
The rescued man stumbled between Tala and Sera.
Nobody looked back.
Not until the first scream came from the ridge.
Then everyone looked.
Nothing.
Another scream.
Closer.
Crowley stopped.
"Keep going."
Gabriel stopped too.
Crowley looked at him.
"Take them."
Gabriel nodded.
Athena turned.
"No."
Crowley looked at her.
"Keep moving."
She didn't.
Crowley stepped closer.
"Go."
Athena studied him.
Then nodded.
"Thirty seconds."
Crowley gave her a look.
"Twenty."
She almost smiled.
Then turned and ran.
Gabriel followed.
Henry looked back.
Crowley remained alone on the road.
Brook slowed.
Crowley shouted.
"Don't."
Brook kept moving.
He hated leaving him.
Crowley looked at him from a distance.
"Keep moving, Brook."
Brook stopped.
Sera grabbed his arm.
"Don't."
Crowley shouted again.
"Go."
Brook stared at him.
Then kept running.
The sound came from the trees.
Footsteps.
Several.
Crowley waited.
The first figure emerged.
Hell.
A captain.
Black armor.
Curved blade.
He stopped twenty feet away.
"King."
Crowley didn't answer.
Another figure appeared behind him.
Then another.
The captain smiled.
"You've been called."
Crowley looked at the road ahead.
Then back at him.
"No."
The captain's smile disappeared.
"You heard the recall."
"No."
"You know what it means."
Crowley looked down at his coat.
The black fabric was torn at the shoulder.
Blood stained one sleeve.
Dust covered the hem.
The same coat.
The coat he had worn through the road.
Through the fire.
Through every fight.
The captain pointed at it.
"You still wear that."
Crowley looked up.
"Yes."
"Why?"
Crowley didn't answer.
The captain stepped forward.
"Take it off."
Crowley shook his head.
"No."
The captain attacked.
Crowley moved.
The blade cut through empty air.
Crowley caught the captain's wrist.
He drove his forehead into the man's face.
The captain staggered.
Crowley twisted the wrist.
The blade dropped.
A second Hell soldier charged.
Crowley turned.
Elbow.
Knee.
The soldier dropped.
The captain recovered.
He swung again.
Crowley stepped inside the blade.
His fist struck the man's throat.
The captain fell to one knee.
Crowley caught him by the collar.
"Tell them."
The captain struggled to breathe.
"Tell them what?"
Crowley released him.
"That I said no."
The captain looked up.
"You can't refuse Hell."
Crowley turned.
"I just did."
The captain rose.
Crowley hit him once more.
He fell.
The remaining soldier hesitated.
Crowley looked at him.
The soldier lowered his weapon.
Crowley turned away.
He started running.
The coat moved behind him.
The Hell captain remained on the road.
Alive.
Angry.
Unable to follow.
Crowley caught up with the group several minutes later.
Henry looked over his shoulder.
"You're alive."
Crowley nodded.
"Unfortunately."
Henry smiled.
Brook looked at Crowley's coat.
The torn shoulder.
The blood.
The dust.
"You okay?"
Crowley looked at him.
"Keep running."
Brook nodded.
They continued.
The road climbed.
The sun had disappeared behind clouds.
No rain.
Just gray light.
Athena looked back once.
"You were followed."
Crowley nodded.
"Hell."
Gabriel asked,
"How many?"
"Enough."
Athena looked at Brook.
"He's slowing."
Brook heard.
"I can hear you."
"Good."
"I can run."
"Then run."
Brook frowned.
Athena turned away.
Henry looked at Brook.
"She likes you."
Brook stared at him.
"She doesn't."
"I know."
They kept running.
The road narrowed again.
Brook's knee almost gave.
Sera caught his arm.
He shook her off.
"I've got it."
"You're bleeding."
"Later."
"No."
Brook looked at her.
Sera's expression hardened.
"Later is becoming dangerous."
Crowley heard.
He glanced back.
"She's right."
Brook said nothing.
They ran.
A few minutes later, Crowley stopped.
Everyone stopped.
He looked at the road.
There was a small stone marker beside it.
Old.
Half buried.
No writing.
Crowley stared at it.
Brook noticed.
"What?"
Crowley didn't answer.
He walked closer.
His fingers touched the stone.
Nothing happened.
He withdrew his hand.
"Nothing."
Brook frowned.
"Then why stop?"
Crowley looked at him.
"Thought I remembered it."
"From where?"
Crowley didn't answer.
He started walking again.
Brook followed.
After several yards, he looked back.
The stone marker was gone.
Not broken.
Gone.
Brook stopped.
Crowley kept walking.
Brook looked at Sera.
She had seen it.
Neither spoke.
The road continued.
They ran until darkness began settling.
Then something moved on the ridge.
Athena stopped.
Everyone stopped.
A silhouette.
Woman.
Long hair.
Still.
Watching.
Brook recognized her.
Lilith.
She stood far above them.
No army.
No weapon.
No attack.
Just watching.
Crowley saw her.
His face didn't change.
Lilith looked down.
Then at his coat.
Her mouth moved.
Brook couldn't hear.
Crowley could.
His expression tightened.
Lilith turned away.
She disappeared behind the ridge.
Henry looked at Crowley.
"Friend?"
"No."
"Enemy?"
Crowley kept walking.
"Complicated."
Henry nodded.
"That's worse."
Crowley didn't answer.
Brook watched the ridge.
"She's not following."
"No."
"Why?"
Crowley looked ahead.
"She doesn't need to."
Brook frowned.
Crowley continued walking.
The road dropped into another valley.
The group followed.
After several minutes, Henry spoke.
"Coffee."
Everyone looked at him.
"What?"
"You said nothing about coffee."
Crowley glanced over.
Henry pointed at him.
"You always make terrible coffee."
Crowley stopped.
There was a small ruined roadside stall ahead.
A metal pot sat beside a collapsed counter.
Henry walked toward it.
"Thirty seconds."
Crowley sighed.
"Twenty."
Henry smiled.
They stopped.
Not fully.
Never fully.
They remained alert.
Sera checked Brook's wound.
Gabriel watched the ridge.
Athena watched the sky.
Tala checked the rescued man's leg.
Hutena kept the book against her chest.
Crowley found a dusty tin.
He opened it.
Coffee.
Henry stared.
"You're kidding."
Crowley sniffed it.
"Probably terrible."
"Make it."
Crowley did.
There was barely enough water.
Henry found two cups.
Crowley poured.
He handed one to Henry.
Henry took a sip.
His face twisted.
"Awful."
Crowley nodded.
"Good."
Brook watched them.
For twenty seconds, the world almost stopped.
Not really.
But enough.
Crowley drank.
Henry drank.
Sera finished tightening Brook's bandage.
Then Crowley put the cup down.
"Move."
They moved.
The cups stayed behind.
The road stretched into darkness.
Crowley walked at the rear.
His coat was torn.
Blood had dried on the sleeve.
The black fabric still hung from his shoulders.
Brook looked back once.
Crowley caught him.
"What?"
Brook shook his head.
"Nothing."
Crowley looked ahead.
"Good."
Brook turned.
They kept moving.
The coat stayed on.
The road stayed beneath them.
Hell had called.
Crowley had answered.
No speech.
No throne.
No return.
Just one word.
No.
And then he kept walking.
