Chapter 311 - The Consent

Chapter 311 — The Consent

Brook cannot move.

He is standing inside a room he has never seen, yet every part of him recognizes that it exists.

The stone beneath his feet is cold enough to hurt through his boots. The air is dry and strangely clean, carrying no smoke, no blood, no dust from the road he had been standing on only moments ago. There is no wind here. No sky. No horizon. Only walls, a floor, a ceiling lost somewhere above him, and a silence so complete that the smallest sound seems enormous.

Then the child cries.

Brook turns toward the sound.

There is a table in the center of the room.

A baby lies upon it.

His breathing stops.

He knows.

He doesn't want to know, but he knows.

The child is wrapped in plain cloth. One tiny hand has escaped from it, fingers curling and uncurling helplessly as the infant cries. The sound is not loud. It is not the desperate scream of pain. It is the confused cry of something that has entered a world it does not understand.

Brook takes a step.

This time, his foot moves.

He stares at the baby.

"No."

His voice comes out.

It is barely a whisper.

The infant continues crying.

Brook takes another step.

There are people standing around the table.

Seven places have been made.

Seven roles.

Seven people who have come here deliberately.

Brook looks at them one by one.

The first man stands at the head of the table.

He is tall, pale, and completely still.

Light rests around him without illuminating the room.

Brook knows the face.

Michael.

The name enters his mind before anyone says it.

Beside him stands another figure.

A man surrounded by darkness that does not behave like ordinary shadow. It moves slightly, like smoke underwater, curling around his shoulders and disappearing beneath his feet.

Lucifer.

Brook's chest tightens.

He looks farther.

Death stands in silence.

There is no theatrical cloak, no exaggerated darkness, nothing designed to make him frightening. He looks almost ordinary until Brook notices the eyes.

They do not look at the body.

They look through it.

Beyond it.

At something Brook cannot see.

Death's attention rests on the infant for several seconds.

Then moves to Brook.

Brook freezes.

Death sees him.

Not the child.

Him.

The adult standing inside the memory.

"You are not supposed to be here," Death says.

Brook swallows.

"I know."

"You came anyway."

"I didn't choose to."

Death looks toward the room.

"No."

The word is quiet.

"But someone did."

Brook turns.

A woman stands on the opposite side of the table.

She holds a staff loosely in one hand.

Shoyo.

Brook knows her too.

She looks younger than he remembers.

Not young.

Just less worn.

There is something in her expression that Brook has never seen on her face in the present.

Regret.

Not regret for being here.

Regret for knowing what comes next.

She looks down at the child.

"Surprise gets expensive," she says.

Brook looks at her.

"What is this?"

Shoyo doesn't answer.

Another man stands beside her.

Rick.

He looks exactly like himself and yet not himself. There is no exhaustion in his face. No century sitting behind his eyes. He is watching the child with an expression Brook cannot decipher.

Rick notices Brook staring.

"You shouldn't have to see this."

Brook's jaw tightens.

"Then don't show me."

Rick looks at him for a long moment.

"I can't."

"Why?"

"Because this isn't ours anymore."

Brook doesn't understand.

Then two more people move into view.

A man.

A woman.

Brook stops breathing.

He knows them.

He knows them without ever having known them.

Adrian.

Elena.

His parents.

They stand close together.

Neither is smiling.

Neither looks afraid.

Adrian keeps his eyes on the child.

Elena's hands are folded against her stomach.

She looks at the baby for a long time before she finally looks up.

Her eyes meet Brook's.

He feels something inside him crack.

"Mom?"

Elena's face changes.

Not because she is surprised.

Because she heard him.

Brook steps toward her.

"Mom."

She doesn't move.

He reaches for her.

His hand passes through her shoulder.

He staggers.

"No."

Elena looks at him.

"I know."

Brook pulls his hand back.

"You know me?"

She nods once.

"You're our son."

The words are simple.

They destroy him.

Brook's mouth opens.

Nothing comes out.

Adrian turns toward him.

There is something hard in his expression.

Not anger.

Resolve.

"Listen."

Brook looks at him.

"Listen to what?"

"To everything."

Adrian looks at the infant.

"Because you don't get to hear this twice."

Brook's eyes burn.

"What is happening?"

No one answers immediately.

Then Michael steps forward.

The room changes.

Not physically.

The air simply becomes heavier.

Michael places one hand over his chest.

"I am Michael."

Brook looks at him.

"I know."

Michael's eyes remain on the child.

"I give from the Archangel Source."

Brook's stomach twists.

Lucifer steps forward next.

He doesn't look at Brook.

"I am Lucifer."

His voice is deeper than Brook remembers.

Not louder.

Just older.

"I give from Hell."

The darkness around him pulls inward.

Death steps forward.

"I am Death."

He looks at the infant.

"I give from Death."

Shoyo moves next.

She places her staff against the floor.

"I am Shoyo."

Her voice is steady.

"I give from Magic."

Brook looks at her.

"You gave me magic?"

Shoyo's eyes flick toward him.

"Not the way you think."

Before Brook can ask what that means, Adrian steps forward.

"I am Adrian Smith."

He doesn't say it proudly.

He says it like a man stating a fact that needs to survive him.

"I give from Soul."

Elena stands beside him.

"I am Elena Smith."

Her voice trembles only once.

"I give from Soul."

Brook looks between them.

"Why?"

Neither answers.

Telina steps forward.

Brook has seen her before.

Not clearly.

Not enough to know her.

But the name is familiar.

She looks toward the child with an expression that makes Brook think of soil after rain.

"I am Telina."

She places both hands against the table.

"I give from Earth."

The floor beneath Brook's feet shifts.

Not violently.

The stone seems to breathe.

Finally, Rick steps forward.

He looks down at the infant.

"I am Rick."

He hesitates.

For the first time, he looks uncertain.

"I give what remains of the Human Immortal."

Brook stares at him.

"You're giving your immortality?"

Rick shakes his head.

"No."

"What, then?"

Rick looks at him.

"Proof."

Brook frowns.

"Proof of what?"

"That a human being can keep going."

Silence returns.

Brook looks around the room.

Michael.

Lucifer.

Death.

Shoyo.

Adrian.

Elena.

Telina.

Rick.

Seven giving roles.

Eight people.

Eight pieces of a decision that has already been made.

Brook turns toward the child.

The baby has stopped crying.

Its eyes are open.

Brook looks at those eyes.

His own eyes.

The room suddenly feels smaller.

"No."

Adrian looks at him.

Brook shakes his head.

"No."

"You don't understand," Elena says.

"I understand enough."

"You don't."

"You're putting all of this inside him."

Elena's eyes fill.

"We are."

"Why?"

No answer.

Brook looks at Michael.

"Why?"

Michael remains silent.

"Why him?"

Nothing.

Brook turns to Lucifer.

"Why me?"

Lucifer's eyes finally meet his.

"Because you were there."

Brook's face tightens.

"What does that mean?"

Lucifer says nothing more.

Brook looks at Death.

"You can see the future?"

"No."

"Then you know what happens to me."

"I know what happens to everyone."

"That isn't an answer."

"No."

Brook's voice rises.

"Then give me one."

Death looks at him.

"You will have to live it."

Brook turns away.

He looks at the baby again.

The child is moving one hand.

Tiny fingers opening and closing.

Unaware.

Unconsenting.

Brook walks toward the table.

Adrian doesn't stop him.

Brook reaches down.

His hand hovers over the infant's head.

He can't touch him.

He doesn't know whether he's afraid to or afraid that he can.

"What did you do?"

Adrian answers.

"We gave you what we could."

"That isn't what I asked."

Elena steps closer.

"We knew what it would cost."

Brook turns toward her.

"And you still did it."

"Yes."

There is no excuse in her voice.

No attempt to soften it.

"Yes."

Brook looks at Adrian.

"And you?"

Adrian doesn't look away.

"Yes."

Brook's hands shake.

"You decided for me."

Adrian closes his eyes.

"Yes."

The answer lands harder than any excuse could have.

Brook looks at all of them.

Michael does not move.

Lucifer does not move.

Death watches.

Shoyo grips her staff.

Telina keeps one hand against the table.

Rick looks down.

His parents stand beside the child.

Brook's voice becomes quieter.

"Did you know I would hate you?"

Elena's eyes close.

"No."

Adrian answers.

"But we knew you might."

Brook looks at him.

"Then why?"

Adrian takes a breath.

"Because you were alive."

"That doesn't answer anything."

"It answers everything."

Brook's face twists.

Adrian continues.

"Being alive was the only thing we could give you that no one else had the right to take."

Brook looks at the infant.

The child moves again.

A small sound escapes him.

Not crying.

Just breathing.

Brook feels the words settle somewhere inside him.

Then Michael approaches the table.

He places two fingers against the infant's forehead.

The room fills with white light.

Brook steps back.

The baby does not cry.

The light enters him.

Not like a weapon.

Not like fire.

Like something being placed carefully inside a container.

The child arches slightly.

Then relaxes.

Michael pulls his hand away.

"It is given."

Brook watches.

"What did you give him?"

Michael looks at him.

"Choice within strength."

Brook doesn't understand.

Michael does not explain.

Lucifer approaches.

The temperature drops.

Brook feels pressure in his ribs.

The same pressure he has felt in himself.

The same violence that has risen through his body when the Devil's Instinct came alive.

Lucifer places his hand against the child's chest.

The darkness enters.

The infant's fingers curl.

Brook feels his own stomach turn.

Lucifer withdraws.

"Impulse."

Brook looks at him.

"That's what you gave me?"

Lucifer's eyes narrow.

"Power without decision is nothing."

He steps away.

Death comes next.

He doesn't touch the child immediately.

He stands there.

Looking.

Brook sees something he has never been able to see before.

Lines.

Thousands of them.

No.

Millions.

They run through the room.

Across the walls.

Across the floor.

Through every person.

Through the child.

Lifelines.

Brook's breath catches.

Death places one finger against the infant's chest.

One line brightens.

The others remain.

"I give sight."

The line disappears beneath the child's skin.

Brook looks at Death.

"So I could see them."

"Eventually."

"But not cut them."

Death's gaze shifts toward him.

"Not yet."

Brook doesn't like the answer.

Death steps away.

Shoyo approaches.

She looks at the infant.

Then at Brook.

"I hate this part."

Brook watches her.

"You gave me Magic."

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because you needed something that couldn't be solved by hitting it."

Henry would have laughed at that.

Sera would have called it obvious.

Brook doesn't smile.

Shoyo kneels beside the table.

She presses two fingers against the baby's palm.

The infant grips them.

For one second, Shoyo's expression breaks.

Then she closes her hand.

The room fills with symbols.

Not words.

Not spells Brook can understand.

Patterns.

Marks.

Possibilities.

They gather around the child before sinking into him.

Shoyo releases his hand.

"Magic doesn't obey you because you ask."

She looks at Brook.

"It listens when you understand what you're saying."

Then she stands.

Brook watches her walk away.

"You're afraid."

Shoyo stops.

"Yes."

"Of what?"

She looks at the baby.

"Of what you'll become."

Brook waits.

Shoyo doesn't continue.

She doesn't need to.

Adrian comes next.

He stands beside Elena.

Neither touches the child yet.

Brook watches them.

"You said Soul."

Adrian nods.

"What does that mean?"

Adrian looks at Elena.

She takes his hand.

"Our part isn't strength."

"Then what is it?"

Elena answers.

"You."

Brook doesn't understand.

Adrian places one hand over the child's chest.

"There are things in you that can't be measured by power."

His voice becomes quieter.

"Memory."

Elena places her hand over Adrian's.

"Love."

Adrian continues.

"Fear."

"Hope," Elena says.

"Anger."

"Mercy."

"Grief."

"Joy."

They look at each other.

Then together they press their hands against the infant.

The room changes.

Brook feels warmth.

Not magical warmth.

Not Source energy.

Something human.

Something painfully ordinary.

The baby takes a breath.

Brook feels that breath inside his own chest.

He closes his eyes.

For one moment, he is no longer standing in the room.

He is lying somewhere warm.

He smells fabric.

He hears a heartbeat.

Someone is holding him.

Someone is whispering.

Someone is laughing.

The feeling vanishes.

Brook opens his eyes.

His parents are still there.

"What did you give me?"

Elena looks at him.

"Everything we could."

Brook's throat tightens.

"You gave me your lives."

Adrian looks at the child.

"We gave you the part of us that could keep living."

Elena's eyes remain on Brook.

"Even if we couldn't."

Brook doesn't speak.

Telina approaches.

The Earth seems to move with her.

The floor beneath the table becomes dark.

Small roots appear through cracks in the stone.

They curl around the table legs.

Telina puts her hand against the infant's foot.

The roots stop.

"I give Earth."

Brook watches.

The child kicks once.

Telina smiles sadly.

"Ground."

The roots retreat.

"Weight."

She touches his ankle.

"Memory."

Her hand rests there.

"Return."

Brook looks at her.

"What does that mean?"

Telina's eyes meet his.

"When you are lost, something will remember that you belong somewhere."

The words make Brook think of home.

A place he hasn't had in years.

He looks at the child.

The baby yawns.

Telina steps back.

Rick remains.

He looks uncomfortable.

Brook almost expects him to make a joke.

He doesn't.

Rick approaches the table slowly.

He studies the infant.

"You know what immortality taught me?"

Brook shakes his head.

Rick gives a small smile.

"That living forever isn't the same as living."

He places one hand over the baby's chest.

"I give him the human refusal to stop."

The child's heartbeat becomes stronger.

Not louder.

Stronger.

Brook feels it.

One beat.

Another.

Another.

Rick closes his eyes.

"I give him persistence."

He removes his hand.

"And the knowledge that survival isn't enough."

Rick steps back.

The room falls silent.

Brook looks at the child.

Six presences have entered him.

Seven roles.

Six Sources.

No.

Not yet.

Brook doesn't know how he knows that.

But something is missing.

Something is still outside.

He looks around.

"That's it?"

No one answers.

Brook turns toward Adrian.

"What else?"

Adrian looks at Elena.

Elena looks toward Telina.

Telina looks at Rick.

Rick looks toward the door.

Brook follows his gaze.

Nothing is there.

"What's missing?"

Death answers.

"Nothing."

Brook looks at him.

"That isn't true."

Death says nothing.

Brook turns toward the child.

The baby has begun crying again.

Not loudly.

Softly.

Confused.

Brook takes a step toward him.

Then another.

He reaches out.

This time his fingers touch the baby's hand.

The infant immediately grips his finger.

Brook freezes.

The hand is so small.

Warm.

Alive.

He feels something move through him.

Not power.

Not magic.

Not death.

Not Earth.

Not Hell.

Not Heaven.

Something deeper.

The room goes completely still.

Michael looks toward the child.

Lucifer's expression changes.

Death watches.

Shoyo lowers her eyes.

Telina takes a step back.

Rick stops breathing.

Adrian and Elena stare at their son.

Brook feels the baby's grip tighten.

"What is that?"

No one answers.

The infant looks directly at him.

Brook looks back.

For the first time, he sees the child's face clearly.

His own face.

His face before scars.

Before blood.

Before the Walls.

Before Xcution.

Before every death.

Before every Source.

Before every choice.

A baby.

Just a baby.

Brook's eyes fill.

"I didn't ask for this."

Adrian's voice comes softly.

"I know."

"You should have let me choose."

"I know."

Brook looks at him.

"Then why didn't you?"

Adrian's eyes remain steady.

"Because you couldn't choose yet."

Brook's expression hardens.

"That doesn't make it right."

"No."

Adrian's answer is immediate.

"It doesn't."

Elena kneels beside the table.

She reaches toward the baby.

Her fingers brush his cheek.

Brook watches.

The infant quiets.

Elena's eyes close.

"We're sorry."

Brook looks at her.

She doesn't say it to him.

She says it to the child.

"To the man you will become."

Adrian places his hand over hers.

"We're sorry."

Brook looks around the room.

All those beings.

All those people.

All those pieces.

They have already decided.

He wants to stop them.

He wants to tear the Sources out.

He wants to grab the child and run.

But the baby is still holding his finger.

And Brook cannot make himself pull away.

The final presence in the room begins to change.

Brook feels it before he sees it.

A warmth.

Not fire.

Not sunlight.

Something alive.

Something human.

The air around the table trembles.

Adrian looks at Elena.

She nods.

Brook's heart begins pounding.

"What is happening?"

Elena doesn't answer.

Adrian does.

"The last part."

Brook looks at the child.

"What last part?"

Adrian's voice breaks for the first time.

"Us."

Brook's eyes widen.

"No."

Elena looks at him.

"You've already given us enough."

"No."

"This is the part we chose."

"No."

Brook tries to pull the baby away from the table.

His hands move.

Nothing happens.

He can't.

The room won't let him.

"Stop."

No one does.

Brook looks at Michael.

"Stop."

Michael remains still.

"Lucifer."

Nothing.

"Death."

Death looks at him.

"This is their choice."

Brook shakes his head.

"They don't know what they're doing."

Death's eyes remain on him.

"They know."

Brook turns toward his parents.

"Don't."

Elena smiles.

It is the first time she has smiled.

It is small.

Sad.

Real.

"Live."

The warmth enters the child.

Brook feels it explode through his chest.

Every Source reacts.

Light.

Darkness.

Death.

Magic.

Earth.

Humanity.

They do not fight.

They settle.

One after another.

Layer by layer.

The infant's heartbeat continues.

Brook feels himself being pulled toward the child.

He is not falling.

He is remembering.

He remembers nothing.

And everything.

A hand holding his.

A voice calling his name.

A woman crying.

A man walking through snow.

A road.

A ruined city.

A promise.

A coat.

A wall.

A door.

A home that doesn't exist yet.

Then the memories disappear.

The room becomes quiet again.

The child stops crying.

His eyes close.

He sleeps.

Brook stands beside the table.

Unable to speak.

The people around him begin to fade.

Not die.

Not disappear.

The memory simply begins moving forward.

Michael steps backward.

Lucifer follows.

Death remains for another moment.

He looks directly at Brook.

"Now you know."

Brook shakes his head.

"No."

Death looks at him.

"You know the beginning."

Then he is gone.

Shoyo looks at Brook.

Her expression is tired.

"Don't turn the first familiar thing you find into an answer."

Brook looks at her.

"What does that mean?"

She doesn't answer.

She disappears with the memory.

Telina is next.

She places one hand against the table.

The roots beneath the stone withdraw.

She looks at the child.

"Keep walking."

Then she is gone.

Rick stays.

He looks at Brook.

"You're going to hate this."

Brook almost laughs.

Almost.

"Why?"

"Because now you know where the weight came from."

Rick disappears.

Only Adrian and Elena remain.

Brook turns toward them.

They stand beside the sleeping child.

His parents.

His beginning.

The two people he never remembered correctly because he never had the chance to remember them at all.

Brook looks at Adrian.

"Did you love me?"

Adrian's face breaks.

"Yes."

Brook looks at Elena.

She doesn't hesitate.

"Every second."

Brook's eyes close.

A tear runs down his cheek.

He wipes it away angrily.

When he opens his eyes, the room is changing again.

The walls are fading.

The table remains.

The child remains.

Adrian bends down and lifts the infant carefully into his arms.

The movement is practiced.

Natural.

Brook watches him.

Elena moves beside him.

She adjusts the blanket around the baby.

Adrian looks at her.

"You ready?"

"No."

Adrian nods.

"Me neither."

Brook looks toward the door.

It is opening.

Beyond it is a road.

Not the road from the present.

An older road.

Broken.

Cold.

The world beyond is gray.

There are no Walls.

No Shinokunis.

No Watchmen.

No cities like the ones Brook knows.

Only ruins stretching toward a distant horizon.

Adrian carries the child through the doorway.

Elena follows.

Brook stands behind them.

He wants to go with them.

He tries.

The memory pulls him forward.

The room disappears.

And for the first time, Brook sees the world his parents carried him into.

A world already broken before he was old enough to understand the word.
