Chapter 313 — The Seal
The road ends at the ruins.
Adrian knows it before anyone says it.
There is nowhere left to go.
Behind them stretches the broken road they have spent weeks traveling, winding between dead fields and forests that have forgotten what season they are supposed to be. Ahead stands the remains of a city that has not yet become a city. Towers lie collapsed into one another. Roads disappear beneath weeds and mud. Old stone foundations break through the earth like bones.
And beyond all of it, something is coming.
Crowley stands alone in the road.
Adrian can see him several hundred yards away.
The Watchman coat is gone from Crowley's shoulders.
It is around Adrian now.
The coat is too large.
It hangs almost to his knees.
He keeps one hand around Brook.
Elena stands beside him.
She is breathing hard.
Brook is awake.
He has been awake for several minutes now, staring at the distant figure approaching through the ruins.
Adrian looks at Crowley.
Crowley does not turn.
"Go," he says.
Adrian doesn't move.
Crowley raises his voice.
"Take the child and go."
Adrian looks toward Elena.
She is already shaking her head.
"No."
Crowley finally turns.
His expression hardens.
"I'm not asking."
"You don't get to decide."
"I do if it keeps you alive."
Adrian steps forward.
"What exactly do you think you're going to do?"
Crowley looks past him.
The figure is closer now.
Still too far to make out properly.
But the air has changed.
The temperature has fallen.
The ruins seem to lean away from the road.
Even the birds have disappeared.
Crowley grips his weapon.
"I'll buy you time."
"For how long?"
Crowley doesn't answer.
Adrian understands.
Not long.
Elena steps forward.
"No."
Crowley looks at her.
"You should listen to your husband."
"I am."
She looks toward the approaching figure.
Then back at Crowley.
"He's telling us to run because he thinks this is his fight."
Crowley says nothing.
Elena's voice becomes quieter.
"It isn't."
Adrian looks at her.
"Eli—"
"No."
She turns toward him.
"We've been running for weeks."
"I know."
"We've watched people disappear."
"I know."
"We've watched towns empty themselves because someone asked the wrong questions."
"I know."
"We've carried him through every road we could find."
Adrian looks down at Brook.
The baby is staring upward.
Elena touches his cheek.
"We can't keep running from something that already knows where we are."
Crowley watches her.
She looks at him.
"You promised."
Crowley's expression changes.
Only slightly.
"Yes."
"You promised to protect him."
"Yes."
"Then let us help you."
Crowley shakes his head.
"No."
Adrian steps closer.
"You said you would stand between him and anything that comes for him."
Crowley looks at him.
"I will."
"Then move."
Crowley's jaw tightens.
Adrian keeps walking.
Crowley doesn't stop him.
The distance between them closes.
Adrian hands Brook to Elena.
Then he looks toward the figure.
"I don't know what you are."
The figure stops.
For the first time, it speaks.
"You know enough."
The voice is neither loud nor quiet.
It simply arrives.
Adrian feels it in his bones.
Elena holds Brook tighter.
Crowley raises his weapon.
The figure walks forward.
The ruins seem to bend around him.
He wears no armor.
No crown.
No weapon.
Nothing about him suggests that he should be feared.
That makes Adrian fear him more.
The Maker stops twenty yards away.
His eyes settle on Brook.
Not Adrian.
Not Elena.
Brook.
The baby begins crying.
Elena immediately turns him against her chest.
The Maker watches.
Adrian steps in front of them.
"You're not touching him."
The Maker looks at Adrian.
"I have no need to touch him."
Adrian's hand tightens.
"Then leave."
"No."
"Why?"
The Maker looks at Brook again.
"He belongs to the work."
Adrian feels something cold move through him.
"He belongs to us."
The Maker's eyes return to him.
"That distinction will not matter."
Elena steps beside Adrian.
"It matters to us."
The Maker looks at her.
"You were not supposed to understand."
She stares back.
"We understand enough."
"No."
The Maker takes one step.
Crowley moves.
The weapon in his hand flashes.
The Maker catches it.
Not with effort.
He simply catches it.
Crowley tries to pull it free.
The Maker looks at the weapon.
Then at Crowley.
"You are not part of this."
Crowley says, "I am now."
The Maker throws him.
Crowley hits a stone wall hard enough to crack it.
Adrian flinches.
"Crowley!"
Crowley drops to one knee.
He coughs.
Then stands.
He wipes blood from his mouth.
"I'm fine."
Adrian almost laughs at the absurdity.
The Maker looks at him.
"You should run."
Crowley raises his weapon again.
"No."
The Maker turns away from him.
Adrian steps forward.
"Why him?"
The Maker looks at him.
"Because he was made to carry what others could not."
Adrian's face hardens.
"Then you'll have to go through us."
The Maker studies him.
"You already gave him what you had."
Elena's face changes.
Adrian knows.
The Maker knows.
The room.
The child.
The seven roles.
The pieces placed inside Brook.
The Maker was there.
Or knew.
Adrian looks at Elena.
She understands the same thing.
He knows.
He knows exactly what they did.
The Maker looks at Brook.
"He should not have been given so much."
Elena's voice is quiet.
"We gave him what he needed."
"You gave him conflict."
"We gave him a chance."
"You gave him instability."
"We gave him life."
The Maker's expression doesn't change.
"You gave him choice."
Elena holds Brook tighter.
"Yes."
The Maker looks at Adrian.
"And that is why you must die."
Adrian takes a breath.
"Then we're going to make you work for it."
He attacks.
The fight begins without warning.
Adrian moves first.
He doesn't have power.
He has no Source.
No supernatural weapon.
Only a knife, exhaustion, and a reason to keep standing.
He drives the blade toward the Maker's throat.
The Maker catches his wrist.
Adrian twists.
He kicks the Maker's knee.
Nothing.
He drives his forehead into the Maker's face.
The Maker's head moves slightly.
Adrian's nose begins bleeding.
He pulls his wrist free and strikes again.
The Maker catches the knife.
The blade bends.
Adrian stares.
The Maker throws him across the road.
He lands hard.
Elena screams his name.
Adrian rolls.
Gets up.
Runs again.
The Maker reaches for him.
Elena moves first.
She throws a stone.
It hits the Maker's face.
He turns.
She runs.
Not away.
Toward him.
She drives the broken edge of another stone into his side.
For the first time, the Maker reacts.
Not pain.
Surprise.
Elena looks at Adrian.
"Now."
Adrian understands.
He runs.
They move together.
Adrian grabs Elena's hand.
They press their palms against the ground.
The earth beneath them trembles.
The Maker stops.
Crowley watches.
"What are you doing?"
Adrian doesn't answer.
Elena closes her eyes.
The ground cracks.
Not from violence.
From pressure.
Something deep beneath the ruins wakes.
Roots spread outward.
Stone splits.
The air becomes heavy.
The Maker looks down.
For the first time, something like anger enters his face.
"No."
Adrian opens his eyes.
"Yes."
Elena's hands begin bleeding.
She doesn't move.
The earth continues to shift.
The roots spread beneath the ruins, beneath the road, beneath the dead fields.
Far beyond what they can see, something answers.
Not a person.
Not a voice.
The Earth itself.
The Maker takes a step toward them.
Crowley intercepts him.
The Maker strikes.
Crowley blocks.
The force drives him backward.
He digs his feet into the ground.
"You'll have to get through me."
The Maker looks at him.
"You cannot stop this."
Crowley bares his teeth.
"I don't need to."
Adrian looks at Elena.
"Now."
She nods.
The ground opens.
A deep vibration passes through the entire landscape.
The Maker looks down.
A mark appears beneath his feet.
Not a symbol.
A boundary.
A law.
Adrian speaks.
"You cannot remain here."
The Maker looks at him.
"What?"
Elena's voice joins his.
"If you remain on the surface of Earth for more than ten minutes—"
The ground shakes.
"—the Earth will take you."
The Maker stares at them.
Adrian continues.
"Not kill you."
Elena's blood drips into the cracks.
"Drink you."
The roots beneath the earth twist.
The Maker's expression finally changes.
The seal is complete.
Adrian collapses to one knee.
Elena nearly falls.
Crowley catches her.
"You did it."
Elena breathes heavily.
"Ten minutes."
Adrian looks toward the Maker.
"That's all he gets."
Crowley looks at the ground.
The law is there.
He can feel it.
So can the Maker.
The Maker looks at them.
"You think this will hold me?"
Adrian stands.
"Yes."
"You think Earth belongs to you?"
"No."
Adrian looks at the ground.
"It belongs to itself."
The Maker's eyes narrow.
"You have no idea what you've done."
Elena holds Brook.
"We know exactly what we've done."
The Maker looks at the baby.
Then at Adrian.
Then Elena.
Ten minutes.
He understands.
He has been forced into a limit.
A boundary.
A rule.
And the people who created it are standing in front of him.
He raises one hand.
Crowley moves.
The Maker disappears.
Crowley turns.
Too late.
The Maker is standing behind Adrian.
Adrian's body jerks.
He looks down.
A hand is inside his chest.
For one impossible second, Adrian doesn't understand what has happened.
Then he sees the blood.
His eyes widen.
The Maker's hand is closed around his heart.
Elena screams.
"Adrian!"
Crowley moves.
The Maker pulls.
Adrian's heart comes free.
There is no dramatic explosion.
No flash.
No final words.
Only the wet sound of something being removed from a body.
Adrian looks at the blood on the Maker's hand.
Then at Elena.
His knees buckle.
He falls.
Elena catches him.
His body is already dead.
She lowers him to the ground.
"Adrian."
Nothing.
She touches his face.
"Adrian."
Nothing.
She presses her hands against his chest.
Nothing.
Brook is crying.
Elena looks at him.
Her face changes.
Not because she has accepted what happened.
Because she hasn't.
Crowley attacks.
The Maker turns.
Their weapons collide.
Crowley drives forward.
The Maker catches his arm.
Crowley strikes with his other hand.
The Maker blocks.
Crowley kicks.
The Maker moves.
Crowley keeps fighting.
He isn't winning.
He knows it.
He fights anyway.
Elena kneels beside Adrian.
She looks at Brook.
Then at the Maker.
Then at Crowley.
She understands.
There is no escape.
She takes Brook into her arms.
She stands.
The Maker throws Crowley across the ruins.
Crowley hits the ground.
He tries to rise.
His arm doesn't cooperate.
He forces it anyway.
Elena steps backward.
"Don't."
The Maker looks at her.
"You chose this."
"Yes."
"You sealed me."
"Yes."
"You knew what would happen."
Elena looks down at Brook.
"Yes."
The Maker walks toward her.
Crowley tries to stand.
"Run."
Elena doesn't.
"Take him," Crowley says.
Elena looks at him.
"You promised."
Crowley's face tightens.
"I know."
The Maker reaches Elena.
She steps back.
He stops.
For one second, no one moves.
Elena looks at Brook.
The baby is crying.
She kisses his forehead.
Then she whispers something into his ear.
Brook doesn't understand the words.
But the memory does.
"I'm sorry."
The Maker reaches for her.
Elena tries to move.
She is too slow.
His hand touches her abdomen.
She freezes.
Her eyes widen.
Then her body begins to convulse.
There is no wound.
No blade.
No blood at first.
The Maker looks at her.
Elena's mouth opens.
No sound comes out.
Her skin pales.
The change moves outward from the point of contact.
Her veins darken.
Her body shakes.
Brook screams.
Crowley pushes himself upright.
"Elena!"
She looks toward him.
Her eyes are still conscious.
Still aware.
She looks at Brook.
Then Adrian.
Then Crowley.
Her body continues breaking down from the inside.
She falls to her knees.
The Maker removes his hand.
Elena collapses.
Crowley reaches her.
He catches her before her head hits the stone.
"Stay."
She looks at him.
She tries to speak.
Her voice barely exists.
"Brook."
Crowley looks at the baby.
Then back at her.
"I have him."
Elena looks at Crowley.
There is relief in her eyes.
Only for a moment.
Then it disappears.
Her body goes still.
Crowley knows immediately.
He doesn't say her name.
He doesn't need to.
Adrian lies several feet away.
Elena is dead in his arms.
Brook is still crying.
The Maker turns toward the child.
Crowley moves.
He takes Brook.
The Maker watches.
"You cannot keep him."
Crowley stands.
He is bleeding.
His arm hangs uselessly.
His weapon lies several yards away.
But he stands.
He holds Brook against his chest.
"You don't get him."
The Maker looks at him.
"Your promise is irrelevant."
Crowley looks toward Adrian.
Then Elena.
Then back at the Maker.
"No."
His voice is quiet.
"It isn't."
The ground beneath the Maker trembles.
The seal is still active.
The Maker looks down.
The ten-minute law has begun.
Crowley realizes it.
He looks at the sky.
The world feels different.
The Earth has noticed.
The Maker looks at him.
"You have minutes."
Crowley says nothing.
The Maker disappears.
Not because he has surrendered.
Because he understands the law.
The moment he leaves the surface, the seal releases him.
Crowley watches the empty space where he stood.
Then looks down.
Brook is still crying.
Crowley turns.
He sees Adrian's body.
Elena's body.
The blood.
The ruined road.
The broken buildings.
The coat around Adrian's shoulders.
He walks toward the bodies.
Brook's crying becomes softer.
Crowley kneels.
He places Brook beside Elena for one final moment.
The infant's tiny hand moves.
It touches Elena's coat.
Crowley closes his eyes.
He doesn't speak.
He doesn't pray.
He doesn't promise again.
He has already promised.
The world has heard it.
Brook's cries continue.
Crowley lifts him.
Then he stands.
He looks at Adrian.
Then Elena.
Their bodies remain where they fell.
There is no miracle.
No movement.
No final breath.
No second chance.
Crowley turns away.
He carries the child.
He takes three steps.
Then stops.
He looks back once.
Only once.
The bodies are still there.
The road is still there.
The world is still broken.
Crowley keeps walking.
Behind him, Adrian and Elena remain dead.
Ahead of him, the child survives.
And somewhere beyond the ruined city, the Maker waits for the ten minutes to end.
