Ryan sighed, thinking Violet was uninterested in listening to what he said.
He followed her line of gaze and saw his elder sister, Katie, on the street, talking to someone.
Ryan was about to look away and focus on Violet when his eyes fell on the person Katie was talking to.
His expression grew darker.
Ryan stood up suddenly, making the chair screech against the floor. Without saying a word, he left Violet alone and ran downstairs, wanting to get to his elder sister.
Violet was about to ask Ryan about the man who was with his sister when she realized that the man had run off the restaurant. She sat in a daze for a brief second. Once she figured that Ryan might be going after his sister, Violet stood up to chase after him.
"Miss!" A staff member carrying a tray of drinks stopped Violet from leaving the restaurant.
Violet looked at the drinks on the tray before glancing in the direction Ryan had left. "I'm sorry." Violet flashed an apologetic smile. "I'll pay for the table." She walked past the staff and headed straight to the counter. Once she had settled their bills, Violet left the restaurant to look for Ryan.
She did not expect to witness Ryan throwing a punch on the man's face the moment she arrived at the scene.
Violet stopped on her track and gasped.
She knew that Ryan had a certain temper right from the start. However, Violet had never expected to see Ryan punching someone in the face.
Meanwhile, Katie rushed to Ryan's side and pulled him away from the man. "Ryan, stop this."
Ryan did not try to struggle away from his sister's hold. He kept his eyes on the man and shot him a warning look. "Louis Li, I warned you not to approach my sister again. But you just won't listen."
The man called Louis held his jaw while staring at Ryan as if he wanted to kill him. "You punched me. You dared to punch me!"
"I punched you so what? Come over here and hit me if you dare!"
"Ryan, please. It's not worth it," Katie coaxed.
Louis swept his gaze around the area and saw that there were a lot of people around them. "Look. I have plenty of witnesses. Everyone! You all saw him punching me. Ryan Chen, I'll report you to the police and see how you will deal with this."
Ryan balled his hand into a fist and showed it to Louis. "Do you think I am afraid?"
Louis flinched with Ryan threatening him. He knew well that Ryan was not afraid of him. If he continued to provoke Ryan, there was a high chance that he would receive another punch.
After all, this would not be the first time something like this has happened.
"Louis, you shut up!" Katie shot a murderous look at the man. "You are the one who harassed me first. My brother is just here to protect me from you. If I tell them what happened, do you think the authorities will listen to me or you? Louis, don't forget that the authorities have their record."
Louis froze, knowing that Katie was telling the truth.
Katie had filed a police report on him more than once. If the authorities looked at the record, they would believe in Katie and Ryan's story.
Moreover, Louis knew well that the Chen family was not someone he could mess up with.
"The lady was telling the truth," a woman spoke while watching Louis in disgust. She raised a hand and pointed a finger at him. "He was the one who harassed the lady first. I saw everything from the start. This man was hurting this lady and refused to let her go. This young manー" She pointed at Ryan, "He came over to help this lady."
"That's right." An older man with bald hair joined in. "I also saw this man harassing the lady." He pointed a finger at Louis.
A few others joined in to defend Katie and Ryan.
Louis's expression turned uglier. Perhaps he thought that no one had seen him arguing with Katie before Ryan showed up.
A lot of people walk past the area. He did not think that some people would stay around.
With the passersby scolding him, Louis had no other choice but to turn around and leave. His face was red with anger.
The crowd cheered the moment Louis left.
Ryan turned and thanked the people who stood up for his sister's side.
Katie heaved in relief as she watched the man getting further away. She turned to Ryan and held his hand. Her brow furrowed as she inspected Ryan's knuckles.
"What are you doing?" Katie's voice sounded anxious. "Ryan, are you an idiot? How can you be so reckless?" Her gaze softened as she met Ryan's eyes. "How are you feeling? Are you hurt"
"I'm fine." Ryan chuckled. He did not know whether his sister wanted to scold him or worry for him. "I am not the one who got hit. Katie, you shouldn't worry about me."
Katie looked furious. "I shouldn't worry about you? Ryan Chen, can you still do your job properly if your hand is injured?"
Ryan swallowed as his elder sister started to scold him. He looked away from his sister and finally saw Violet who was standing not too far away from them. A faint smile curled on his lips as Ryan saw the worried look on Violet's face.
"What are you smiling about?" Katie followed her brother's line of gaze and finally saw Violet. Katie's expression changed. She felt awkward at the thought that Violet had seen everything. She was arguing with her ex-husband and was ashamed of what happened.
But then she realized that Ryan and Violet were together.
The light in her eyes flashed.
She had always thought that Ryan's relationship with Violet was very bad. But it seemed that s
omething had changed between them.
