Jeff's warning followed Destiny all the way to her bedroom.
It sat with her while she changed out of her clothes, while she brushed her teeth, while she stood in front of the bathroom mirror trying to decide whether she looked as tired as she felt.
Sometimes the person standing in front of you looks exactly like the person you remember.
She hated that sentence.
Not because it frightened her, but because it was the sort of thing that sounded meaningful without actually explaining anything.
She had asked Jeff what he meant.
He had refused to tell her.
And now she was supposed to look at Conrad differently because of a warning that could have meant anything.
Destiny climbed into bed and reached for her phone.
No messages.
She stared at the screen longer than necessary before locking it.
Conrad had been fine.
He had laughed with her. Remembered her. Held her when she needed him to.
