Tyler was barely five years old—when his world turned on its head. Tyler and Frank been playing with his cousin's dog, when he suddenly decided, on a childish impulse, to see what it felt like to be a dog. A tiny, uncontrollable spark ignited deep within him, and with a pop, the boy was gone, replaced by a four-legged imitation of their family pet, a golden retriever.
Minutes later, they were called out by their grandma for lunch, however, tumbling in the grass were two identical, barking dogs happily chasing a ball with a thoroughly confused Frank. The sight was too much for his Grandma Naomi. She stood on the porch, clutching her chest, and then simply burst out laughing.
"Oh, heavens," Naomi giggled, wiping a tear from her eye. "It looks like I'll be looking after four children from now on!" She scooped up the bewildered 'dog,' and in her warm embrace, Tyler felt a familiar tug. With another pop, he was back in his own skin.
