Chapter 2 - second night

I eventually found a bucket and cloth, for cleaning. I took them back to the room.

Then I carried the body downstairs. The gate which had some condensation around it, was still locked. So I just left the body and head on the ground near by.

After cleaning the room, I went back downstairs to load the boxes onto the trolley I'd found earlier.

I took a closer look in the boxes. They would probably produce 2 weeks worth of crops each harvest. These crops would be ready for harvest in 4 weeks. I needed to increase the production. 'Maybe a truck would do.' I thought to myself.

Not too long after, some giant insects did appear at the main gate. I dragged the body over, which they promptly took care of. Then they left slowly. Maybe they knew this place offered food around this time.

I cleaned the rest of the blood stains right after.

After I was done with everything, I went back to the room upstairs. It's about time we left.

"Hey wake up. We need to go now." I shook her.

She opened and rubbed her eyes, as she woke up. Then she looked around wearily. "The farmer?"

"He is out to get something important, we don't have the time to wait for him."

"Ohh... I see... he looked a bit scary to me." she replied, lowering her head.

"Is that so?" I remarked.

So... she was afraid of him. Well then it was for good I suppose.

After she got down from the bed, I held her hand, guiding her downstairs.

We left the farm with some seeds, the trolley and the axe.

We walked along the central road. As we neared the outskirts of the city, I noticed the jungle around had grown thicker, engulfing even the roads. This would likely make these giant lumbering insects unable to enter the forest.

We exited the city along the road to the south. This should lead to another city, away from the main nuclear fallout.

I didn't see any animals mutated or not. Not even a sound- it was eerily silent. I'd assumed the animals only came out at night.

I wanted to save the crops for emergencies, at least for now. It would be best to fish. Fish were mutated the least after the war.

I cut a branch with the right thickness. Then I sharpened one end of it to make a spear. The branch was surprisingly sturdy under pressure, but it did cut easily with a sharp age.

After walking further, I finally heard the gushing water of the nearby river.

I took her to the river before looking for a good place to camp. I found four trees near each other which would allow for a small camp to be set up, above ground level.

I collected some vines from nearby, and with her help, made the main structure, about 10 feet above ground. It had a crude roof, made from twigs and leaves.

After building the camp, I went to fish. I caught 20 fish, but only 7 of them were edible, the rest being mutated in some way. I would want to keep them for biogas. Maybe I could find a container to keep them in.

I asked her to stay at the camp, as I explored the nearby area. After some time walking, I found an old abandoned hut. Looking around inside, there was an empty plastic container of about 20 litre capacity. It had wheels, so it could be carried easily. I took it back with me.

As I'd returned, I noticed she hadn't moved. After checking on her with her, I put the rest of the 13 fish into the container, and closed the lid tightly, so that gas can build up in there.

Then, I cut some small branches and started a fire in front of the camp. I dried 4 of the fish, which we ate. Sun was already setting by then. Afterwards, I went to catch even more fish for the night. Getting 2 more good fish, and 15 more mutated ones.

After a few more hours, during which she stayed calm and silent, I dried 4 more fish to eat, before I put her to sleep.

By then, some low growls could already be heard, but nothing had attacked yet. I did not believed they couldn't jump 5 feet or climb the trees, so I decided to stay awake, to defend the camp from anything that might try to attack.

They didn't approach until it was past mid night. The growls and howls grew closer. Eventually I was able to see a few glowing eyes. I readied the axe in my right hand.

A shadow leaped toward me, I stepped to the left, before I tried striking at it with a downward swing. I was able to react quickly enough to strike its neck, but I was barely able to cut deep enough to reach its bone.

It was a wolf... Or it looked like one. Any normal wolf would overpower me if I tried fighting it directly. I didn't know if this one was stronger or not, and I had no intention of finding out. I decided to dodge its attacks and hit as it passes by.

It attacked again by the time I turned to face it again. I immediately took step left, this time attacking twice, as it passed by. One of the attacks hit it's eyes, while the other struck near its stomach, making a sizable wound.

It flinched giving me another opportunity to attack. I hit its neck again. I still couldn't get past its bone. This time I hit near a joint; Maybe another strike there would split a tendon and allow me to sever it's head.

It started slowly circling me. I stood my ground, facing its way. We both were waiting for the right opportunity to attack.

Another howl nearby broke the silence. I took a step forward, trying to strike it's neck, it dodged and leapt at me, I barely blocked the attack with the axe, as it's claws pushed me down to the ground.

As it tried to bite me, I pushed it with the axe handle to the side, freeing my axe from it's claws in the process. It tried to bite again, I simply put the axe head in its way. As it bit down on the axe head, I thrusted it deeper into it's mouth, tearing through its flesh It recoiled, finally giving me space to stand up.

By the time I stood back up, it was still disoriented, giving the perfect opportunity to strike. With the final blow, its head was severed.

But that wasn't the end of the night. From the sound there were 11 more. Some lions and some wolves. Fortunately they didn't attack in packs, each time one attacked the others stayed back, making it possible to keep them at bay.

By the time morning came, I had killed 5 more. The rest vanished with the first rays of light filtering through the canopy.

Afterwards I cut those who I have just killed and put them in that container. It filled half of the container.

After several more hours I woke her up. As we were departing I collected some of the vines from the hut, this should come in handy later.

I can keep this up for upto 28 days straight but after that I'll need to sleep. I'll need to find a safe shelter before 28 days.
