CURRENT DATE CORRELATION: 79 AD

LOCATION: THE BAY OF NAPLES / POMPEII

STRUCTURAL OBJECTIVE: KINETIC ABSORPTION SECTOR

The Roman Empire was drowning in its own excess, oblivious to the fact that it was built upon a ticking geographic clock. On the surface, the city of Pompeii was a sprawling, sun-drenched haven of marble villas, crowded markets, and stone-paved streets choked with patricians, slaves, and merchants. The air smelled of roasting meats, cheap wine, and the faint, sulfurous sigh of the massive mountain looming over the northern horizon.

Five hundred feet directly beneath the bustling forum, David stood in the oppressive heat of a raw volcanic fissure.

His massive frame was fully integrated with the midnight-violet sheen of the Vibranium-T-O-Symbiote matrix, completely impervious to the bubbling magma rivers shifting just yards away. He was adjusting a massive, hyper-dense kinetic dampening column, a pillar of solid Vibranium interwoven with microscopic Techno-Organic filaments that tapped directly into the magma chamber of Mount Vesuvius.

...The mountain is angry, David... the symbiote's dual-layered voice vibrated through his neural pathways, its dark consciousness swirling with an intense, expectant thrill. ...The earth melts. The pressure builds. Millions of tons of fire are trapped behind the stone. It wants to scream. Let us crack it open early. Let us watch the meat burn...

"The eruption must occur precisely on schedule," David instructed coldly in his silent, internal thoughts. "According to the chronological coordinates of the Atlas, Vesuvius will breach its physical threshold in exactly forty-eight hours. We are not here to alter the disaster. We are here to harvest it."

David pressed his dark, shifting hand against the column's master terminal. Microscopic liquid-metal needles shot from his fingertips, rewriting the operational parameters of the local node.

The strategy was flawless in its efficiency. When the volcano erupted, it would release a cataclysmic discharge of thermal and kinetic energy. Instead of letting that raw power bleed uselessly into the atmosphere, David's newly installed Vibranium relays would siphon off precisely 14.2% of the kinetic backlash, enough to completely supercharge the European sector of his planetary grid for the next three centuries, but not enough to change the physical scale of the explosion on the surface.

Furthermore, the millions of tons of volcanic ash and pyroclastic flow that would bury Pompeii would create an impenetrable, toxic shield. His subterranean foundries would be sealed beneath a dead city, perfectly cloaked from human interference until the excavations of the modern era.

CALIBRATION COMPLETED: SYPHON ARRAYS ARMED LOCALIZED SEISMIC ANOMALY TRACKING: ACTIVE

David pulled his hand back, the T-O threads snapping cleanly into his armor. He was about to turn toward the high-velocity transit conduit to return to the Pyramid Ship when a sudden, violent spike of psychic energy registered on his suit's internal HUD.

It didn't come from the deep earth. It came from the surface, less than two miles away, inside one of the luxury patrician villas overlooking the bay.

The signature was intimately familiar. The crimson tracking marker on his internal map flared with absolute clarity.

Selene, David calculated, his azure eyes narrowing behind his matte-black visor. Her energy signature has stabilized into a high-tier mystical matrix. She has embedded herself within the Roman patrician class. And she is moving toward the mountain.

Up on the surface, the air in the coastal villa was stifling. Selene Gallio stood on a private terrace of white marble, her long, starlight-black stola whispering against her ankles as the sea breeze caught her hair. To the Roman senators who vied for her attention, she was Julia, a wealthy, devastatingly beautiful widow of mysterious foreign lineage. To herself, she was an undying queen, and right now, her skin was crawling.

For the past three days, the phantom frequency she had first detected in Greece eight centuries ago had returned, louder and more intense than ever before. It was vibrating directly through the roots of the mountain.

She could feel the natural, chaotic rage of Vesuvius building, that was simple elemental magic. But beneath that volatile, molten fury, there was a secondary heartbeat. A cold, rhythmic, mathematical pulse that was actively organizing the pressure, channeling the tectonic stress into specific, geometric pathways through the deep earth.

"You are here," Selene whispered, her crimson lips tightening into a hard, feral line as she stared up at the smoky peak of the volcano. "The master of the silent stone. You think you can hide behind a burning mountain?"

She didn't hesitate. She didn't care about her wealth, her cultists, or the impending doom of the Roman city. She was entirely consumed by a fierce, centuries-old obsession to uncover the entity that defied her magic. Wrapping a dark cloak around her shoulders, she slipped away from the villa, her pale feet moving with supernatural swiftness as she bypassed the crowded streets and headed directly into the rocky, desolate foothills of the volcano.

Down in the subterranean chamber, David watched her red marker advance rapidly up the mountain's southern ridge, heading straight toward the primary fault ventilation shaft.

...The witch comes for us... the symbiote hissed, its liquid shadow coiling tightly around David's shoulders, forming jagged, predatory pauldrons that thrummed with kinetic anticipation. ...She tracks the frequency, David. She is walking into our trap. Let us go up. Let us show her what happens to primitives who hunt the shadow.

David stood motionless in the flashing crimson light of the terminal, his analytical mind executing a rapid series of risk-reward simulations.

According to his Atlas, Selene was slated to survive the eruption of Pompeii regardless of his actions; her immortal physiology and dark sorcery would easily shield her from the ash. But her sensory evolution had crossed the threshold from passive variable to active participant. She had tracked his infrastructure across a thousand miles and eight hundred years.

"The probability of maintaining total anonymity in this sector has dropped below the acceptable margin," David calculated softly, his voice completely deadened by his suit's dampening field. "Continuing to avoid contact will result in her actively disrupting the kinetic siphons during the eruption phase."

He willed his right arm to shift, the matte-black alloy liquefying and reforming into a heavy, brutalist gauntlet laced with Vibranium density.

"We will interface with her," David decided, his azure eyes flashing with a cold, absolute authority. "We will establish the terms of our presence. Let us go up to the ridge."
