The lingering effects of the chemicals won't vanish completely until he is out there. The more powerful the supernatural, the more effective the poison was.

 

Slowly, he turned toward the covered pit. His steps echoed faintly against the metal floor, heavy and dragging. There, in the middle of the steel cover, was a small circular glass—only slightly bigger than his hand—which allowed a narrow view of what lay below.

 

Vextral followed his movement silently, saying nothing. He could see the despair in the Wolf King's green eyes, the way his shoulders slumped, and the quiet tremor in his hands. Though the slashes in Zek's back still bled, Vex knew the man wouldn't die from them.

 

As Ezekiel stopped over the manhole, Vex knew he wouldn't be stupid enough to open it again. Instead, he said quietly, "I'll be at the door." He turned and left, giving him the moment he needed.
