Chapter 2 - Am I Unlucky or Lucky Tonight?

Hailey kept praying that Vince would go to his bedroom so she could go to hers and change into appropriate clothes.

She fidgeted where her feet were nailed. Vince realized she was uneasy around him; thus, he rose from the sofa, grabbed his suitcase, and went upstairs.

"I'm going to the study to read some documents," he announced without looking in her direction.

"Okay," Hailey replied as she nodded, throwing secret glances at Vince's receding figure. Hailey then heaved a sigh of relief once the bedroom door closed behind Vince.

'Finally, he's gone.'

Now she can go back to her bedroom. But before that, she fetched another glass of water and finished it in one gulp after the sudden tension dried her throat.

She almost forgot her intention of coming to the kitchen to drink a glass of water.

But then... 'How embarrassing that was!'

She poured herself some water when Vince arrived suddenly, surprised by his unexpected appearance.

If she had known he would come back this early, she wouldn't have dared to wear sexy lingerie but would have worn decent nightwear, like pajamas or an oversized T-shirt.

Meanwhile, before Vince could enter the bathroom, he remembered something. He stepped out of his bedroom just as Hailey was passing through his door.

The girl suddenly froze on the floor, giving him a surprised look at his flat stomach. He found it funny and cute, but he kept his mouth shut and hid his smile.

"Ahem. Good that you're here. Can you make me a coffee and bring it to the study?"

It took a few moments for Hailee to regain her senses. Coming out of a trance, she blinked her eyes several times. Gradually, she averted her gaze from Vince's half-naked body and nodded slightly. Hailee's cheeks flushed pink when she realized she had been staring at him.

"Sure! I'll bring it over!" she almost stammered her words. It happens, her heart beating loudly, deafening her ears.

Thanks!" Vince curled his lips into a thin smile. He turned around and entered his bedroom. He could see that something was off about her. He peeked through the small gap in the door before closing it. He saw her rushing into her bedroom as if a mad dog were chasing her.

It left him wondering, 'She should go to the kitchen. Right?'

Shrugging his shoulders, Vince turned around and headed to the bathroom. The moment the door closed, the corner of his mouth curled into a smirk.

"How amusing..." Vince is mumbling while showering.

In Hailey's bedroom, she felt like screaming. What just happened? Why is he suddenly coming out of his room, only wrapped in a bath towel around his waist?

It's not like she hasn't seen six or eight packs up close, but their situation is unlikely to be imagined. She was living alone with a stranger in one roof!

'Hailey, calm down.' She reminded herself, but then realized, 'Oh, well. What is my role, anyway?'

Ugh. Before she fainted from embarrassment and felt uncomfortable all evening, Hailey quickly changed into decent sleepwear and put on a silk robe.

She returned to the kitchen and brewed a pot of coffee, as Vince asked.

Sitting in one of the dining chairs, Hailey impatiently waited for the coffeemaker to finish brewing. She hoped it was done before Vince finished his shower so she could bring the coffee to his study without bumping into him again, even though it's crazy to think she could avoid him while they were living in the same house.

'How is it possible that would happen, Hailey? You were not thinking at all!' She could not stop scolding herself.

Sighing hopelessly, Hailey stood up and grabbed a wooden tray from the kitchen drawer. She arranged a saucer and the mug she bought for Vince on the tray, then picked up the pot from the coffee maker. She was thankful that Vince was still in his bedroom when the coffee finished brewing.

Hailey hurried into the study but was careful. She placed the tray on the console table near the window. However, just as she was leaving, Vince entered the study.

Her fragile body collided with a sturdy chest. Thank goodness the owner of this body has quick reflexes.

Vince stretched his left arm, holding her at the waist, and pulled her closer. But being held like this by him gives her shudders.

Once more, Hailey froze on the floor, wishing for it to open and swallow her whole again.

"Careful..."

Vince's deep, husky voice awakens every nerve in her body. She is grateful that the only lighting in the study is the lampshade on the table.

Even so, she's still praying he will not notice how red her ears and flushed cheeks are. Vince gradually loosens his hold on her body and steps aside. Seeing that she remained silent, he coughed to clear his throat.

Ahem. Thanks for the coffee," Vince said upon noticing the tray on the table.

"You're welcome. I'm going to bed now," Hailey said, lowering her head and avoiding eye contact with him. Then, she dashed outside without waiting for his reply, bidding him goodnight. "Good night!"

Hailey went into her bedroom and made sure to lock the door before jumping onto her bed.

'Am I unlucky or lucky tonight?' Hailey asked herself.

Screaming inside her head, she gradually calmed herself down. She rolled onto her back and covered her face with her palm.

'What a night!'
