Chapter 28 - THE CALM!

Kyrah had spent the past few days buried in revisions.

Every criticism from Haneul Technologies had been examined. Every weakness in her proposal had been corrected. She had gone through the technical specifications repeatedly, tested the AI model, fixed the bugs and rebuilt sections that needed improvement.

Today was the final presentation.

She stood in front of her mirror that morning, staring at herself for a moment before looking down at her stomach.

"Let's do this," she whispered.

She grabbed her bag and hurried out.

Before leaving, she took her prenatal vitamins with breakfast. She had been much more careful since her hospital visit. Her baby needed her to take care of herself, especially now that her morning sickness had become more difficult to ignore.

By the time she reached Jun Chao Group, she was already feeling slightly nauseous.

She headed straight for the employee rest area.

Coffee.

She needed something to settle herself.

As she approached the coffee machine, she spotted Xiumin.

"Good morning, Team Leader," she said quickly.

He looked at her. "Good morning. You're grabbing coffee?"

"Yes."

Xiumin glanced at her stomach.

"Wow. Hunger looks good on you."

Kyrah froze.

"Me?"

He nodded.

"You're putting on some weight."

She laughed nervously.

"Ah... yes. I've been eating a lot lately."

That was probably the biggest lie she'd told all week.

She had barely been able to keep food down some mornings. Her pregnancy was becoming harder to hide, and she knew it wouldn't remain that way forever.

She quickly poured herself a cup of decaf coffee.

It looked like coffee.

That was good enough.

Xiumin picked up his own cup.

"Don't drink too much. We have a long day ahead."

"I know."

Kyrah grabbed the files from her desk and checked them one last time.

"I'm ready."

"We're waiting for Director Liu Yuning."

Kyrah nodded.

A few minutes later, Liu Yuning arrived, and the three of them headed toward the company van.

Kyrah sat beside the window, her presentation files resting firmly on her lap.

Her fingers tapped against the folder.

She had prepared.

She had practiced.

She had done everything she could.

Still, her heart wouldn't cooperate.

This was the final presentation.

If Haneul Technologies rejected the proposal again, there would be very little room left for another attempt.

Kyrah took a deep breath.

Whatever happened today, she would learn from it.

She had already come too far to allow one rejection to decide her future.

The company van eventually pulled into the Haneul Technologies headquarters.

Kyrah looked up at the building.

This time, she wasn't coming here to convince them to give her a chance.

She was coming to defend her work.

Inside the boardroom, Chairman Han Wei Cheng sat at the head of the table.

Beside him was his son, President Han Min-Jae.

Several members of Haneul's development team were seated along the table, laptops open and documents arranged neatly in front of them.

The atmosphere was more serious than their previous meeting.

Liu Yuning greeted them before introducing the team.

"Chairman Han, President Han, thank you for meeting with us again. This is Xiumin, the team leader overseeing the project, and this is Kyrah Lee. She has been leading the development and revisions of the proposal."

Kyrah stepped forward.

"Good morning. Thank you for giving us another opportunity."

Chairman Han gestured toward the presentation screen.

"Let's see what you've changed."

Kyrah nodded.

She connected her laptop.

The first slide appeared.

She began.

"Our initial proposal focused heavily on the capabilities of the AI system. After our previous meeting, we realized that wasn't enough."

She clicked to the next slide.

"Haneul Technologies doesn't need another system that simply demonstrates what artificial intelligence can do. You need a system that solves a problem your customers are already experiencing."

A few members of the development team exchanged glances.

Kyrah continued.

"Our revised proposal is built around three functions: adaptive energy management, personalized environmental control and predictive home assistance."

She brought up a demonstration.

"The system learns a user's routine without requiring them to repeatedly program it. It recognizes patterns, adjusts the environment accordingly and can make recommendations based on usage."

President Han leaned forward.

"And what prevents the system from making incorrect assumptions?"

Kyrah smiled.

"Nothing prevents it from making an incorrect assumption."

The room became still.

Then she continued.

"That's why we changed the system architecture."

She brought up another slide.

"The AI doesn't permanently act on an assumption. It assigns confidence levels to behavioral patterns. If the confidence level isn't high enough, it asks for confirmation instead of making the decision."

One of the developers began taking notes.

President Han looked toward one of his colleagues before turning back to her.

"And the data?"

Kyrah didn't hesitate.

"Encrypted and separated by user profile. The system will also allow users to delete their behavioral data whenever they choose."

"That's expensive."

"Yes."

The answer came so quickly that President Han raised an eyebrow.

Kyrah continued.

"But so is losing consumer trust."

A member of Haneul's team smiled faintly.

Kyrah moved to the next slide.

"That's why we're proposing a limited pilot program before full-scale implementation. Three functions, a controlled group of users and a fixed evaluation period."

Chairman Han finally spoke.

"And if the pilot fails?"

Kyrah looked directly at him.

"Then we find out why before millions of customers have to."

There was a pause.

Kyrah continued.

"We're not asking Haneul Technologies to gamble on our technology. We're asking you to test it with us."

Chairman Han leaned back.

"What makes you think your company can deliver?"

Kyrah glanced briefly toward Liu Yuning and then back at him.

"Because we didn't come back with the same proposal."

She clicked to the final slide.

"We listened."

The room remained still for a few seconds.

Chairman Han looked toward the developers.

One of them whispered something into his ear.

He nodded.

Then he looked back at Kyrah.

"How soon can your team begin?"

Kyrah blinked.

"Immediately."

The chairman's lips curved into the smallest smile.

"Good."

He closed the file in front of him.

"Haneul Technologies approves the proposal."

Kyrah froze.

For a second, she wasn't sure she'd heard correctly.

Then President Han extended his hand toward Liu Yuning.

"Let's begin the collaboration."

Liu Yuning shook his hand.

Xiumin followed.

Then Kyrah stepped forward.

"Thank you."

She shook the chairman's hand, and the moment she stepped away, she felt her eyes burning.

She had done it.

Her first major project at Jun Chao Group.

Approved.

As they walked out of the building, Kyrah pressed her lips together, trying desperately to hold herself together.

Xiumin noticed.

"Are you crying?"

"No."

"You definitely are."

"I am not."

A tear escaped anyway.

Kyrah quickly wiped it away and laughed.

"I'm just happy."

Liu Yuning smiled.

"You earned it."

Kyrah looked at him.

"Director, could you excuse me for a moment?"

He nodded.

"Go ahead."

Kyrah stepped a short distance away and immediately pulled out her phone.

There was only one person she wanted to call.

Seo Jun answered after the first ring.

"Hello?"

"I got it!"

There was a brief silence.

Then—

"You got it?"

"I got it! Haneul approved the project!"

Seo Jun shot out of his chair so quickly that he nearly lost his balance.

"Yes!"

His foot caught the edge of the chair.

"Whoa—"

He grabbed the desk before falling.

Kyrah heard the commotion through the phone.

"Seo Jun?"

"I'm fine."

She burst out laughing.

"What happened?"

"Nothing."

"You nearly fell, didn't you?"

"I was celebrating."

"You were falling."

"I was celebrating aggressively."

Kyrah laughed even harder.

"I can't believe you."

"I knew you could do it."

His voice softened.

"I told you to trust yourself."

Kyrah wiped another tear from her cheek.

"Thank you."

"You did the work. I only reminded you that you could."

For a moment, she didn't say anything.

Then she smiled.

"I really did it."

"Yes, Tripper. You really did."

When she returned to Jun Chao Group, Xiumin had already called the team together.

"The Haneul project has officially been approved."

The room erupted in applause.

Kyrah stood there, stunned.

Xiumin smiled at her.

"And our project lead deserves the first congratulations."

Everyone clapped again.

Kyrah stood up slowly.

She looked around the room.

Nobody was taking credit for her work.

Nobody was pretending her contribution had been theirs.

They were celebrating her.

At her previous job, she had learned how easily hard work could disappear behind someone else's name.

Here, people wanted to see her succeed.

Kyrah felt another wave of emotion rise inside her.

She smiled.

"Thank you. I'll work even harder."

Xiumin nodded.

"You'd better. We're starting immediately."

He began assigning responsibilities, putting together a team that would work directly with Kyrah on the project.

Kyrah sat back down, still smiling.

She had arrived in Hong Kong with almost nothing.

Now she had a career she was proud of, colleagues who believed in her and a future she could finally begin building for herself and her baby.

She rested her hand lightly against her stomach.

"We did it," she whispered.

Everything seemed to be falling into place.

Her career was moving forward.

Her baby was growing. Kyrah allowed herself to enjoy the moment without worrying about what might come next.
