Bertha Swift found the more she explained, the more awkward the atmosphere became, so she just stopped trying.
Adam Piers pressed on, the chill in his voice sent shivers down Bertha Swift's spine, and any previous relief in her heart was shattered. She scrambled to hide her true emotions and replied to Adam Piers distractedly, "It's nothing, don't worry about it."
But even though Bertha Swift said this, it was clear Adam Piers had no intention of letting it go. His gaze cool as he countered, "Earlier you said it was a misunderstanding with Oswald Lewis, and I didn't say anything then considering your situation. Now you say what you said about me was a misunderstanding, should I interpret it in reverse as the truth?"
Bertha Swift was bewildered by Adam Piers' logic, staring blankly at the man. What did he mean?
Did he genuinely believe the obvious lie about Oswald Lewis? How could that be? She wasn't narcissistic to such an extent!
