Chapter 30 - Chapter 30: Sunstone Synthesis, Alpine Power, and the God of Thunder

Two weeks passed after the New Year sign-in. It was mid-January 2011.

Adrian descended into the private workshop beneath the Presidential Palace and stepped through the dimensional threshold into the World Seed.

The pocket realm remained a silent, vacuum-sealed valley of dark stone, completely isolated from Earth's orbital sensors. In the center of the dark plateau sat an array of raw elements he had gathered from the northern excavations: high-purity quartz crystal, refined silicon plates, and dense carbon blocks.

Adrian closed his eyes, interfacing with the vast Kryptonian Technology Database anchored in his mind. He focused on the foundational cornerstone of Kryptonian civilization: programmable crystalline matrix structures, commonly known as Sunstone.

He placed his hands over the mineral cluster, activating his Transmutation Authority.

<< Sophia: Accessing Kryptonian metallurgical archives. Target: Base Sunstone crystalline matrix. >>

<< First trial: Molecular lattice cohesion failure. Photonic absorption index misaligned. >>

The quartz and carbon fractured under his palms, disintegrating into brittle, chalky shards across the stone floor.

<< Recalibrating: Adjusting lattice refraction angles and balancing internal electron containment. >>

Adrian cleared the debris and set another batch of refined silica. On the second and third attempts, the crystalline bonds stabilized, but thermal bleeding warped the structural symmetry.

On the fourth attempt, blue transmutation sparks snapped through the vacuum. The quartz, silicon, and carbon liquefied into a shimmering translucent stream, drawing together and hardening into a clean, geometric obelisk.

Adrian lifted his hands.

Resting on the pedestal was a foot-tall, hexagonal prism of deep amber crystal. It held zero heat, yet ambient light in the chamber bent subtly toward its faceted surface, absorbed into an internal micro-lattice that hummed with silent, self-contained energy.

Through four rounds of trial and error, they had successfully synthesized their first functional Sunstone prism—a matrix capable of capturing, storing, and refracting ambient solar radiation at near-total efficiency without degradation.

Two months passed. The winter thaw began across the lowlands, but the high Balkan peaks remained locked in frost. It was mid-March 2011.

Adrian arrived at Mount Vernik, a rugged alpine ridge whose sheer granite walls historically severed four remote mountain villages from the national power grid.

Dressed in a heavy shearling coat, thick leather boots, and insulated gloves, Adrian climbed thirty feet up an icy steel scaffolding alongside an engineering crew from the Novi Grad State Polytechnic Institute. Bitter mountain winds whipped across the pass, but the President worked alongside the apprentices, setting high-durability alloy mounting brackets and tightening the tension cables with a mechanical ratchet.

A young polytechnic technician held a guide strut steady, watching with wide eyes as Adrian wiped frost from a steel junction box.

"Torque check on the lower bracket is solid, Elena," Adrian said, checking the bolt with his wrench. "Hand me the secondary ground line."

Elena passed the insulated domestic alloy cable. "Mr. President, the local elders down in Kova couldn't believe we were hauling panels up this ridge in March. They expected us to wait until June."

"The people in the high pass have waited long enough," Adrian replied, securing the conduit into the weather-sealed housing.

Beneath the heavy domestic alloy casings lay the pilot solar-thermal substation. To any foreign satellite or inspector, the installation appeared as a standard array of domestic photovoltaic mirrors. Hidden inside the insulated junction cores, however, were compact Sunstone collector prisms, capturing the thin alpine sunlight and converting it into steady, high-voltage current with five times the density of standard solar cells.

One month passed. It was mid-April 2011.

In the alpine village of Kova, the stone-walled community center glowed with steady, warm electric light for the first time in regional history. Radiant heating pipes, fed by the Mount Vernik alpine substation, warmed the polished stone floors of the village clinic and schoolhouse.

Adrian, Pietro, and Wanda walked through the village square without formal security cordons.

An elderly village elder with deep weathered lines across his face approached them, holding a wooden platter piled with dried mutton and fresh hearth bread. Tears welled in the old man's eyes as he pressed the bread into Adrian's hands.

"For sixty years, our children froze in these stone huts every winter," the elder said, his voice thick with emotion. "When the blizzards hit, we burned our fence posts just to keep the babies breathing. Today, the school floor is warm, the lights don't flicker, and the doctor has hot water in the clinic."

"The high road is open, too, Elder," Pietro said, smiling as he gestured down the valley. "Our rail rotary plows cut through the pass three weeks ahead of schedule. Your timber carts can roll down to Trnava tomorrow morning."

Down the cobblestone lane, Wanda stepped out of the village medical outpost. Her focused awareness brushed across the clinic, confirming the domestic refrigerators were humming steadily on the alpine micro-grid, keeping vials of domestic insulin and pediatric vaccines preserved at perfect temperatures. The isolation that had strangled the mountain folk for generations was finally broken.

By mid-May 2011, the confidential terminal inside Adrian's private palace office sounded a high-priority alert.

Sophia routed decrypted military telemetry and live transatlantic intelligence to the secure screen.

<< Sophia: Priority signals intercept. United States and S.H.I.E.L.D. tactical command. >>

<< Location: Puente Antiguo, New Mexico. >>

<< Incident: S.H.I.E.L.D. research perimeter breached and completely destroyed by an extraterrestrial automaton composed of unknown hyper-dense alloy. Target demonstrated directed thermal disintegration beams. >>

<< Engagement: The exiled civilian subject identified as Thor reclaimed the localized hammer artifact via atmospheric electrical discharge, generating a localized supercell. The automaton was dismantled. Subject confirmed his identity as the Asgardian Prince of Thunder before departing the planet via an exotic Einstein-Rosen bridge. >>

<< Location: New York City, New York. >>

<< Secondary Intercept: Captain Steven Rogers has been successfully extracted from Arctic ice and resuscitated. Subject escaped a S.H.I.E.L.D. quarantine bunker, penetrating several containment levels before being confronted by Director Nicholas J. Fury in Times Square. >>

<< S.H.I.E.L.D. Strategic Posture: Director Fury has initiated Phase 2 weapons development under Project P.E.G.A.S.U.S., contracting Dr. Erik Selvig to weaponize the extraterrestrial Tesseract into directed-energy ordnance. >>

<< Regional Status: Sokovian intelligence profile remains locked at Green: Routine Monitoring. International focus is entirely absorbed by domestic defense fallout in the United States. >>

Pietro and Wanda stood beside Adrian's desk, reviewing satellite imagery of the Bifrost scorch mark fused into the New Mexico desert floor and leaked traffic camera stills of Rogers standing bewildered beneath the neon signs of Times Square.

Pietro shook his head, pointing at the glassed crater in the desert. "First flying armors and green giants, now Norse gods dropping from lightning storms in the desert. The universe is much bigger than we thought."

Wanda watched the still frame of the awakened super-soldier. "And America is digging up relics of the past to fight whatever comes next."

"Relics won't save them from what lies beyond the sky," Adrian said, powering down the secure monitor. "The cosmic door has swung open. While S.H.I.E.L.D. scrambles to weaponize energy cubes, we build our own strength in the shadows."

Adrian turned toward the private stairwell leading beneath the palace.

The pilot Sunstone array on Mount Vernik had proven the concept; now it was time to return to the World Seed and scale Kryptonian geo-engineering into the beating heart of Sokovia's sovereign network.
