Chapter 56 - The Emperor

Early next morning I moved out towards the castle. The Peshwa had already been informed of our arrival and had instructed me to be present for the morning Sabha[1] that would be taking place early today. Our emperor was a man of strict discipline and he himself led by example. He would always be up before the sun rose, keep himself fit by training and expected the same from most, if not all, of his ministers and soldiers. His daily routine was strict and so the early morning Sabha was something that nobody missed.

As I was called alone, Ketki was still in bed and having her much deserved rest. Since the captain was unable to accompany us in the journey, Adishri was the one accompanying me. There was no need for any weapons, vigilance or soldiers surrounding me since this was the most secure place in the empire. The soldiers were therefore given instructions to do as they wished while we were in the capital as long they took turns with the basic patrol around the house.
