[Please select one reward.]
The mound shook.
A fungal plate behind me bent inward, then returned to its original position with a wet scraping sound.
The feeder had not paused to respect the importance of personal development.
Four options appeared.
(A) Passive Ability: Moisture Reservoir
(B) Active Ability: Mucus Adhesion
(C) Passive Ability: Vibration Mapping
(D) Passive Ability: Dormant Metabolism
I read them once.
Then again.
Four answers.
One selection.
The first sign-in had taught me that every useful description was followed by a sentence explaining how it could ruin my life.
Progress meant reading the warning first.
I pressed my shell more firmly against the yellow mineral point. The basin remained below the narrow lip, warm water moving through the darkness.
The mound shook again.
I focused on the first option.
The others faded.
[Passive Ability: Moisture Reservoir]
[Effect: Increases the amount of water the host can retain safely.]
[Cost: Greater stored water increases mass and makes turning and balancing more difficult.]
Water.
My body reacted to the word before my thoughts did.
The skin beneath my shell still felt tight. My foot remained irritated. Every metre across the field had cost moisture, and the basin had restored only enough to make dehydration less immediate.
More storage meant longer movement between water sources.
Longer experiments.
More time before dehydration weakened my mucus.
Useful.
Very useful.
It also meant more mass.
My shell had nearly dragged me into the basin while I was already dehydrated. Additional weight would make slopes harder, turns slower, and every balance failure more committed.
Stored water could be spent.
That made the ability better than permanent extra weight.
Probably.
But I had found a reliable seep, and my current problem involved staying attached to surfaces rather than carrying an emergency drink inside myself.
Long-term survival.
Poor immediate solution.
I returned to the list.
The plate above me shifted.
Blue light travelled through its underside.
Something tore farther behind it.
I focused on the second option.
[Active Ability: Mucus Adhesion]
[Effect: Temporarily increases the adhesion of newly secreted mucus.]
[Cost: Consumes mana and water. Repeated use irritates the foot and mantle.]
I stared at the description.
Newly secreted mucus.
Not old trails.
Temporary.
No duration.
No mana cost.
No water cost.
No measurement for the increased adhesion.
Excellent.
The System had discovered verbs and decided numbers were unnecessary.
The uses arrived anyway.
Holding position on a slope.
Bracing against flowing water.
Climbing surfaces ordinary mucus could not grip.
Keeping dead fungal fragments in place.
Holding a living branch against another patch without wedging my shell beneath it.
Anchoring part of my foot while reaching for another surface.
Holding small objects.
Possibly blocking a narrow water path long enough to redirect it.
Possibly attaching myself so securely that the feeder could eat at a comfortable pace.
That last possibility deserved respect.
Adhesion worked in both directions.
If my mucus became difficult to separate from stone, the stone would become equally difficult to separate from me.
The description did not include release instructions.
Of course it did not.
Every reward changed my body.
None included a manual.
The System remained an unethical research program with excellent presentation.
Another vibration passed through the mound.
The mineral point pressed harder against my shell as the ceiling shifted.
Mucus Adhesion might solve the immediate problem.
It might also consume the water I had just recovered and irritate tissue that already hurt.
Useful did not mean safe.
I returned to the list and focused on the third option.
[Passive Ability: Vibration Mapping]
[Effect: Improves the host's ability to estimate the direction and rough distance of vibrations travelling through a connected surface.]
[Cost: Powerful or overlapping vibrations may overwhelm the host and disrupt balance.]
Information.
Real information.
Not the ordinary pressure I currently interpreted by guessing which direction death sounded louder from.
I might locate the feeder through stone before it entered view. I might distinguish distant movement from falling water. I could potentially map hidden spaces or identify branching routes without entering every one.
Direction and rough distance.
Nothing more.
It would not identify the source.
A falling plate and a feeding creature could still feel similar until experience taught me the difference.
The cost was also extremely relevant.
Water flowed through several grooves.
The feeder tore through the mound.
Blue pulses travelled through overlapping tissues.
The basin carried every impact through wet stone.
I was positioned above water deep enough to drown in, with incomplete sensation and a shell that treated balance as a suggestion.
An excellent place for sensory overload.
Vibration Mapping might prevent future surprises.
It would not hold me to the stone when the next one arrived.
I focused on the final option.
[Dormant Metabolism]
[Effect: Reduces water and nutritional consumption while the host is fully withdrawn and inactive.]
[Cost: Slows the host's ability to emerge and react. Provides no benefit while moving.]
Food and water controlled everything.
Dormant Metabolism could let me survive inside a sealed crack for longer periods. I could hide during danger, wait through dry conditions, and conserve resources while observing slow changes.
For a creature whose main defensive strategy involved becoming a hard object and hoping the problem left, it was almost perfect.
Almost.
The feeder bit through another section of the mound.
The ceiling dropped a fraction.
A thin gray fragment struck my shell and slid into the basin.
Dormant Metabolism required full withdrawal and inactivity.
The feeder would not become less capable of eating my shelter because I took a nap inside it.
Slower emergence also meant less time to react when plates shifted, water rose, or mouthparts entered the gap.
Long-term survival.
Bad immediate situation.
I returned to all four options.
Moisture Reservoir.
Mucus Adhesion.
Vibration Mapping.
Dormant Metabolism.
None solved the feeder.
Good.
That meant I had stopped expecting the System to care.
The first time, I had evaluated four rewards using guesses about a body I barely understood.
Now I had evidence.
Dehydration weakened mucus.
Extra mass worsened balance.
Vibrations provided warning but could arrive from several directions at once.
Dead fungus became useful when I could hold it in place.
Living contact could redirect visible pulses.
Water restored moisture and removed stability in the same movement.
The environment had taught me six metres of biology.
I had paid attention.
Moisture Reservoir improved how long I could operate.
Dormant Metabolism improved how long I could wait.
Vibration Mapping improved what I could detect.
Mucus Adhesion improved what I could physically do.
That mattered most.
Information without movement left me correctly informed while dying.
Storage without control made me heavier.
Dormancy required the danger to pass.
Adhesion created options.
Dangerous options.
Those were still options.
I focused on the second reward.
[Confirm selection: Mucus Adhesion?]
[Yes/No]
The mound shook.
A crack opened through the pale layer behind me.
Warm water rippled in the basin.
The outer plate bulged inward.
I selected yes.
The reward screen vanished.
Heat spread through my foot.
Not the warmth of the basin.
This began inside the tissue.
The front edge tightened first.
Then the sensation travelled backward in narrow lines beneath my body.
My mucus glands contracted.
Every part of my foot tried to pull inward at once.
I pressed against the stone and waited.
The heat reached the mantle.
Pain followed.
Not sharp.
Pressure.
As if something beneath the tissue had expanded without asking whether space existed.
My shell lifted slightly.
I contracted instinctively.
Ordinary mucus spread beneath me.
It felt ordinary.
Probably.
I had not activated the ability.
I did not know how.
That problem could remain unsolved for several minutes.
[Health Points: 1/1]
[Mana Points: 30/30]
No registered damage.
No mana spent.
The transformation continued.
The lines beneath my foot branched, tightened, and settled into a deeper awareness I had not possessed before.
Not control.
Potential.
Like discovering a muscle by having it cramp.
My mantle burned along the lower edge.
I pulled farther beneath my shell and stopped when the mineral point pressed against me.
The heat faded slowly.
[Active Ability Acquired: Mucus Adhesion]
[Temporarily increases the adhesion of newly secreted mucus.]
[Consumes mana and water. Repeated use irritates the foot and mantle.]
The feeder bit again.
Closer.
The fungal plate behind me split along its lower edge.
Blue light poured through the tear.
Pale mouthparts broke through.
