"Well, I'd assumed you made this engagement promise with my father, for one of his daughters. I had no idea it was made with my mother," Alex said, feigning worry as she looked at Lydia.
Lydia simply looked at Alan without a word, wanting to see how he'd react. Lying to your daughter behind closed doors was one thing; doing it in front of witnesses was another.
Alan found himself in a genuinely awkward spot as everyone in the living room turned questioning eyes on him.
"You've misunderstood me. I said it was a promise between our two families, you never asked exactly who it was made with," Alan said with an embarrassed smile, scrambling to cover himself. "Let's not dwell on the past. I brought you the one you wanted anyway, didn't I?" He glanced at Eliott with a faint smile, desperate to steer the conversation onto safer ground.
Eliott only nodded and took a sip of water, pleased to see the anxious look on Alan's face, as though he were reliving his worst nightmare.
