Chapter 36 - The Weight of Growth

The golden rays of the morning sun filtered gently through the window as Lucky stirred in bed, his body finally getting a well-deserved rest. For the first time in what felt like ages, he had slept on a proper bed. Stretching with a long, satisfying groan, he sat up, yawning and ruffling his hair. His bones popped softly in protest, a reminder of the long days he'd been out working nonstop.

After washing up, he slipped on his gear and left his little apartment. The streets of Magnolia bustled with morning life. Merchants shouting, kids playing, and the ever-warm scent of freshly baked bread from local bakeries filled the air. Lucky bought a quick breakfast—steamed buns and milk—and enjoyed the stroll, knowing what he had to do next.

Today was the day he checked on his clones.

Leaving Magnolia behind, he trekked to the forest. The canopy was lush, a vibrant green that danced with the sunlight. The breeze carried a gentle hum as birds chirped and leaves rustled. It didn't take long before the clones spotted him.

"There he is!" one clone called out.

"Finally back!" another groaned. "You left us here for two whole days!"

"Do you even remember we exist?!"

Lucky laughed nervously. "Sorry, sorry! I didn't expect the grind to take that long. I thought you'd disappear on your own."

"Nope!" they all said in unison.

He scratched the back of his head. "Alright, alright. Let's get this over with."

He walked to the center of the clearing where the clones stood. Nine of them—all looking just as drained and irritated as he expected. The last time he dispelled clones, the backlash gave him a slight headache. And that was with only a day's worth of experience. Now it had been two.

He took a deep breath. "Momentary pain or instant death…"

He braced himself—and dispelled them.

The rush of experience slammed into his mind like a tidal wave. A spike of white-hot pain hit his skull, making him groan and nearly fall to one knee. He clutched his head and gritted his teeth. "Aghhh—damn it… that hurts way too much…"

After several long minutes of throbbing pain, it finally faded. Lucky wiped the sweat from his brow and sighed.

"Okay… time for the moment of truth."

He opened his stat window.

"SP didn't drain much… that's a relief," Lucky muttered, genuinely thankful. Becuase after some calculation it seemed that each clone consume 100 SP.

His hands trembled with anticipation as he opened his skill window.

"Eight hundred clones… Holy crap," Lucky whispered, awestruck.

Then it hit him.

"That's… 2,500 mana per clone. I'd need 2 million mana to summon all of them!" He slumped. "Yikes… that's a steep price. But it's fair. Each one has 35% of my strength now."

He stood up and summoned two clones, burning 5,000 mana.

"Alright, here's the plan. Clone 1, Clone 2—grind OL. I want Magic Steal or Magic Absorption to show up in Lucky Draw soon. I have a theory I want to test."

He summoned almost all his summons, distributing them between the two clones.

"Also, please don't start a forest fire or destroy the ecosystem."

The clones grumbled.

"This is boring," one of them muttered.

"Do we look like grinders to you?" said the other.

Lucky crossed his arms. "It's for our future."

"You keep saying that!"

"Fine, join me for a while then."

The clones grinned.

Lucky sighed. "Actually, never mind. I need to recover mana ."

The clones looked at him and mumbled "... pathetic"

After the clones left an hour went by quickly

Lucky found out someone was walking in the distance

He glanced at Erza approaching in the distance.

and the clones also arraived at the same time

All clones turned toward me then at erza with confused looks.

He rolled his eyes.

Erza reached him, hands on hips. "I figured I'd find you here. You weren't at the guild."

"Yeah," Lucky replied. "Just had a bit of a headache."

"You okay?"

He smiled. "All good now."

She nodded. "I came to see if you wanted to visit the armor shop with me. I'm going to order my custom set."

"Sure."

He gave the signal. The beasts howled, alerting the clones to come back. They returned with a huge stack of cards.

Lucky blinked. "That's a lot…"

The clones handed them over.

"No special creatures though," they said.

"Still. Good work."

He turned them all into Origin Luck.

A shimmering golden orb the size of a tennis ball appeared in his hand. It pulsed with energy.

He touched it. It merged into his body.

He opened his stat screen again.

"That's… actually not a lot," he muttered. "So many cards… and just 15 OL?"

He scratched his head. "Guess it's harder than I thought."

He looked at the clones. "Keep grinding. I want the Ability or Talent unlock."

They saluted lazily. "Roger that."

Turning back to Erza, he smiled. "All sorted. Let's go."

They headed back into Magnolia and walked into a massive blacksmith shop. The heat slammed into them like a wall.

Lucky winced.

Erza, unaffected, walked up to the front desk.

Behind the counter was a buff woman with a measuring tape draped around her neck.

"I'd like to order a custom armor set and sword," Erza said confidently.

The woman raised an eyebrow. "Got money?"

Erza nodded. "Up front."

The woman smirked. "Follow me for measurements."

Ten minutes passed. Lucky stared at the rows of weapons and armor, admiring the intricate craftsmanship.

Erza came back beaming. "They'll start crafting soon. Should take a few days. Thanks to all the money we earned, I didn't have to hold back."

"You planning on a mission soon?" Lucky asked.

"Yeah. I need to cover the rest."

He nodded. They made their way back to the guild.
