Chapter 23 - Champagne and consequences

# Chapter 23

They found Aldana forty minutes later, not fleeing the palace, but standing calmly among the guests near the ballroom's northern entrance, dressed impeccably, holding a glass of champagne he had no intention of drinking.

He didn't run when Reyes's officers approached.

He simply smiled, the expression of a man who had already accepted, on some level, that this particular gamble had failed.

"Lieutenant Sanchez," he said, as Angelo stepped into view behind the officers. "I confess, you were the piece of this I never accounted for. A soldier from Sanjara, arriving entirely by accident, undoing years of careful work."

"It wasn't an accident," Angelo said. "I heard someone in trouble. That's all it ever was."

"And yet here we are." Aldana's smile didn't waver, even as the officers moved to restrain him. "Do give the King my regards. Tell him I only ever wanted to save this country from the slow, comfortable decay his family has allowed it to become."

"Tell him yourself," Angelo said. "He's right downstairs."

Aldana's composure faltered, just slightly, as the officers led him away — not toward escape, but toward a reckoning he had clearly hoped never to face directly.

The King learned everything within the hour, in the same private study where so much of this had already unfolded — the decoy near Marcus, the gunman in the private box, Aldana's calm presence among his own guests the entire evening.

He sat very still as Reyes explained it all, his face unreadable in a way Angelo hadn't seen from him before.

"He was in my ballroom," the King said finally. "Drinking champagne. Smiling at my guests. While his men aimed weapons at my son and stood above my own head."

"Yes, Your Majesty."

The King looked at Angelo.

"And you stopped him. Again."

"Your security detail—"

"Stop," the King said, not unkindly, but firmly. "I am done hearing you deflect credit that belongs to you, Lieutenant. Tonight, twice, you placed yourself between my family and people who wished us harm. I will not allow you to shrink that into something smaller than it was."

Angelo said nothing, unsure how to accept words like that.

Elena, standing beside him, reached for his hand without hesitation, in front of her father, in front of Reyes, in front of anyone who cared to notice.

The King saw it. He said nothing about it, not yet, but something in his expression softened, just slightly, amid all the night's exhausted relief.

"It's over," Marcus said quietly, from where he sat, still pale from the evening's chaos. "Isn't it? Truly over?"

"Aldana is in custody," Reyes said. "His network will take longer to fully unravel. But the immediate threat, yes — I believe it's over."

The room exhaled, collectively, for what felt like the first time in weeks.

Outside the study windows, Valoria's night continued, unaware how close it had come to losing something it hadn't even realized was so fragile — a monarchy held together, in the end, not by soldiers or ministers or careful planning, but by a family that had finally stopped keeping secrets from each other, and a stranger who had never stopped believing that a promise, once given, meant something.
