The Shinobi went as deep into the forest as he could. That way he couldn't be bothered by anyone or bother them. Under the pale light of the moon, Naruto whipped the chain through the air. He didn't have any experience with a chain weapon. But when someone offers you a magic chain, you don't say no. At least, that was how the boy thought about it.

"Let's see what you've got."

First order of business: figure out how this thing actually worked.

"I need to cover the end," he said to himself. He pulled off his shirt, wrapping the fabric securely around one end of the links. Gripping the wrapped bundle, he swung the weapon forward. The chain shot outward, extending rapidly toward the nearest tree. The moment the tip hit the trunk, it stopped. He swung it again, this time letting it loop around the bark.

Naruto watched in fascination as the extending metal wrapped around the tree over and over. It stopped when the far end hit the chain itself.

"Okay, so it stops extending when it hits something."

Wanting to see if he could simplify the process. He unwrapped his shirt and simply closed his palm tightly around the end of the chain instead.

This should be a lot easier.

He swung.

Nothing.

The chain didn't extend.

"Why does the shirt wrap work, but my hand wrap doesn't?"

The boy pressed a finger to the side of the head. This was his time-tested method for deep thinking. Maybe it needs to be more hidden, he thought. Maybe my hand leaves too much of the metal exposed.

To test his theory, he buried the end of the chain in both hands and swung it. The chain extended and slammed into a nearby tree.

"Okay, so I can do it two-handed," Naruto said, scratching his chin. He wondered how he could possibly use it one-handed in a real fight. Suddenly, he gasped as inspiration struck. "What if I just tape one end?"

Shadow Clone Jutsu!

A single clone materialized right next to him. Naruto was going to have the clone fetch the tape. But he saw something that stopped him in his trackd.

The clone wasn't just standing there... it was holding an exact duplicate of the magic chain. The two Narutos just stared at each other. An entire conversation seemingly happening between them without a word being said. The clone whipped his duplicate chain forward.

It didn't extend.

"Maybe hold it with two hands."

"Yes, boss."

The chain still refused to stretch.

"Okay, so I'm guessing only the original chain can extend."

"But my chain looks just about as big as yours."

Naruto hummed thoughtfully at the clone's words. He channeled chakra to his palms and broke his chain in half. The broken off segment instantly dissolved into a cloud of CE.

Poof.

In the new clone's hands was a half-length chain just like the original was holding.

"So, when you make a clone, the clone's chain matches whatever length your chain is at that exact moment."

"We got that, genius," the original replied.

"Well, I was about to suggest something interesting. But I don't talk to mean people," the clone said with a dramatic huff.

"Okay, okay, I'm sorry! Now tell me."

The clone turned back around. "Fine. What happens if you make a clone while the chain is actively extending?"

"Actually, that is a really good question. Man, I'm such a genius!"

"But I suggested that!"

"We are the same dude!" Naruto yelled back.

The original swung the chain. But the exact moment his hand left the metal to form the hand sign, the chain instantly stopped extending.

"Okay, we are back to square one. Go get some tape so I can fix this hidden end problem."

"Yes, boss."

"It better be orange!"

A few minutes later, the clones held a single roll of dark blue duct tape.

Naruto's face fell.

"My disappointment is immeasurable, and my night is ruined."

"Just use it," the clone said, tossing the roll over. "We couldn't find any orange tape anywhere."

Grumbling under his breath, Naruto wrapped it around the base of the chain. He used so much duct tape that it formed a thick handle, completely concealing the metal end. He took a deep breath and whipped it forward.

The chain extending deep into the tree canopy.

"Yay!" the trio cheered in unison, jumping up and down.

It worked.

"Let's find some proper orange cloth to wrap it with later. That should look a lot better than this ugly tape," a clone suggested.

Naruto nodded in agreement. He pulled the chain back and prepared for the next test. He swung the chain one-handed. Right as it extended forward, he quickly used his free hand to form the seal.

Poof!

The new clone held a chain that perfectly matched the extended length of the original's. But a moment later, the original chain kept extending forward. That meant the clone's chain would match whatever length the original chain was at the moment of creation. But the original could keep getting longer.

"Well, that answers that question," Clone No. 1 said breaking his chain.

Poof.

"Sorry, boss, but the clone chains also pop in a single hit!"

"Not that useful then," Naruto muttered, pulling the weapon back and looking at the links. Even with the magical ability to extend, it was still an ordinary chain.

"What if you channel your chakra through the chain. Make it stronger so it doesn't break as easily."

The original Naruto nodded slowly. Still, he couldn't help but wonder why his clones seemed so much smarter than him.

Closing his eyes, Naruto reached into the swirling reservoir of his chakra. He focused, guiding it through his arm, and directly into the blue duct-tape handle.

A flickering blue aura ignited along the metal links.

"Oh, yeah! Look at that!"

"Stop talking and smash something already, Boss!"

The chain stretched past the clones. The front of the chain was covered in chakra. But the chain that was extending, wasn't. The chakra covered chain violently ripped away a chunk of thick bark while the force caused the chain links to break.

"Uh... well," Clone No. 1 said. "That was completely pathetic."

"Hey! Why didn't you cover the entire chain in chakra?" Clone No. 2 asked.

"Because I have to continuously pump my chakra through the metal while it's extending!" the original barked back. "And I don't have that kind of crazy control, dattebayo!"

"Yeah, well, that's not something to be proud of."

"Oh, shut up! Like you could do any better!"

"I can," Clone No. 4 bragged. "Just cover a kunai in chakra, attach that to the end of the chain, and use that. "

"Hmph!" Naruto huffed, "Alright, whatever. Since you guys have such good ideas, what should I do next?"

[ Next Morning ]

"Did you get any sleep last night?" Suda asked as Naruto slumped into a chair at the breakfast table.

The boy looked like he had fought a war against sleep and won purely on a mix of stubbornness and stupidity. His eyes were heavily bloodshot, and his hair was even messier than usual. It was nesting a collection of dry leaves and twigs from his late-night training.

"I was up all night testing the chain," Naruto said, "You guys wanna see what I worked out?"

He turned eagerly toward the twins. His sleep deprivation was clearly no match for his enthusiasm.

Both of them ignored him for their phones.

Guess they're still mad about Negi, Naruto thought, his shoulders slumping. He shot Suda a helpless look across the table. Trying to break the ice, Suda spoke up. "Girls, did you know that Naruto helped me capture a semi grade 1 curse last night?"

"That's cool, I guess."

Naruto managed a smile at the tiny compliment, but the woman just shook her head at the lingering tension.

"Nanako, can I trust you to help Naruto manage his money today?" Suda asked.

"Do I have to?" Nanako complained.

Naruto felt a sharp pang of sadness. He couldn't believe their friendship had hit such rock bottom so quickly.

"Girls, behave," Geto said. "Family help each other."

"Yes, Geto-sama."
