"Hmmm," the old man with a dog's head slowly closed the massive tome, its ancient pages settling with a faint weighty thud. A satisfied, almost weary smile spread across his face as he rose to his feet and called out in a low, measured voice, "Fairy, I'm finished."
Whoosh—directly before him, a fairy materialized in silence. Her face was utterly devoid of emotion, smooth and indifferent, as though carved from pure will rather than flesh. She reached out, drew the book toward herself, and began examining it with meticulous, almost frightening precision, her movements crisp and mechanical.
