Chapter 16 - Gauging the capabilities

Keith walked into the other half of the room and the metallic door closed behind him. Daniel pressed a button on the panel and spoke into the microphone that broadcasted his voice to Keith, "Okay, let's begin shall we, I have created an obstacle course test to determine your body's capabilities, they will focus on your strength, speed, resistance to damage, reflexes and stamina, you will complete the course and we shall get an estimate,"

As Daniel said that the lights came on, most of the floor was a treadmill belt with the corners being metallic ground, in the corner to the left of Keith there stood a metallic pedestal with a headband and a wristband on it, infront of him there were five stand alone punching bags rising out of the floor, on the walls and the ceiling there were multiple circular metallic hatches.

"Okay Keith, put on the headband and wristband to the left of you, we will use them to monitor your body's vitals, the goal is pretty simple, move to the other end of the room and back but you have to complete certain tasks that will help guage your capabilities, "

"Okay," Keith said wearing the wristband and headband.

Daniel pressed another button on he panel and a robotic female voice said.

[Engaging Test]

[Stage one: Strength]

Keith took that as a sign to start, though the voice didn't exactly tell him what to do, he assumed it had something to do with the punching bags infront of him, he walked up to one of them and gave it a weak punch but he didn't expect it to be so sturdy so he tensed up his bicep and punched the bag with full force, due to the force of his punch the bag bent back wards and as it slammed into the floor a large bang was heard. Daniel the spoke up, "That's enough, you can move on to the next test,"

Keith then heard him say to himself, "One more of those and the whole room would crumble,".

[Stage two: Speed]

The punching bags and the pedestal lowered into the ground making the room clear and the floor stated to vibrate lightly then move backwards speeding up gradually, this forced Keith to start jogging as the speed of the floor kept increasing, he reached the centre of the room when the speed suddenly shot up causing Keith to stumble nearly falling flat on his face, he was moved back quarter way the room when he broke into a run he started progressing slowly and increasing his own speed until he eventually reached one of the corners at the other side of the room.

[Stage three: Reflex]

As Keith walked to the center of the room, one of the hatches opened and shot out a rubber ball the size of a baseball straight at his face. Keith caught the ball before it hit but another shot came from his side which he also caught, the number of shots kept increasing rapidly as he blocked each one until there was a sound of a short circuit followed by a loud bang and the balls stopped coming.

[System malfunction]

"Daniel, what's happening," Keith asked.

"There is a malfunction in the system, so just come out," Daniel answered.

"Okay" Keith said but the moment Keith took a step forward the room's lights started flashing red.

[S-Stage tw-t-thr-three: Sp-re-spee-eflex]

All the hatches opened and started firing at once as the ground started moving backwards at a high speed slamming Keith into the back of the room as the balls rushed towards him.

"Keith get out of there!" Daniel said, "I can't stop i-" the microphone got cut off before he could finish.

Keith tried moving forward but with the speed of the floor and the number of balls moving it was overwhelming, 'Okay Keith, concentrate, you can do this,' he said to himself.

Keith jumped forward into the center of the room and started running forward while blocking the balls that would come his way, as the floor became faster he would also increase speed and slowly he was inching towards the door.

Suddenly a metallic ball the size of a football got shot out at a faster speed than the others and hit Keith in the forearm of his left hand, he could feel his bone crack.

"Why are you putting yourself through this?" Damian asked.

"I didn't think that this would happen when I agreed," Keith responded.

"No, what I meant was, why haven't you used your force field yet?"

Keith screamed internally as he had completely forgotten about his powers as he activated his force field, he started getting closer to the door and the number of rubber balls reduced and the number of metallic balls increased, they were slamming into the forcefield with a thud. Keith exploded the force field pushing away all the balls as he jumped forward and slammed into the door, it bent inward and he punched it and sent it flying into the other room, he walked out panting.

[Test complete]

The floor stopped moving and the hatches stopped shooting out balls.

"What was that about?" Keith asked, the frustration eminent in his voice.

"Well you just made it through the test," Beverly said, "now we have the information we need to guage your abilities,"

"What!" Keith exclaimed.

******

While Keith was in the middle of his test, the three people in the other room were having a conversation.

"Why did you withdraw the men that were watching him? Amanda asked.

"We need him to trust us as much as possible," Beverly replied

"And faking the system failing is gonna gain his trust." Daniel said sarcastically.

"To get accurate results he needs to give us his all," Beverly said.

"I know, I know, "Daniel said pressing a button on the panel," let's just see how he fairs and hope this doesn't end badly, "
