Chapter 1 - CH1:House on the Hill

"Riley!" Screamed mom, "Come down to eat. The food is getting cold." Hey, that's my mom Sue, and I am Riley Jones. I live in an urban area but, this year mom and I are moving to a place called Frankville. Mom's job wants her to transfer to a different department so we have to move. She works for the newspaper. There isn't a lot of propaganda on that town or relevant news. We have been packing for a few days now, and we just loaded up the car. I'm apathetic about it. I need an antidote for my bland life. Our new town is about a three-hour drive away and I know it's going to be quiet. Frankville only has about two thousand people. While driving, mom listened to the radio and talked about what she thought the townspeople would be like. We finally arrived that night. I could see a big, old, gray house sitting on top of a hill at the end of the street. Clouds seemed to hover above the house giving it an ominous feeling as the wind blew ruthlessly. Even from here, I could see that the beams holding the house together needed to be reinforced ages ago. I hoped that the prospects of us staying here were slim, but I was wrong. When we pulled into the driveway, I opened my door to see that the house was radically larger closeup.

"Mom, do we have to stay here?" I asked.

"Yes, I know you might not like it, but believe it or not, this was the only house available," mom replied.

I opened the door. The inside was as old and dull as the outside of the house. We got settled pretty quickly that night. There were four rooms all together with two rooms between mine and my Mom's. I lay in my room that night thinking about how the school would go tomorrow and our full

agenda when I heard something like a ball bouncing downstairs. I got up to see what was going on.
