"Verbergen has changed more than I thought" - said Meiru with a frown as she looked around the former capital of the forest kingdom - "More so with everything destroyed by the demons."
"I sense no hostility for them in your words, Meiru-san" - Yue said as she raised an eyebrow.
"Because they weren't our enemies, in fact, we had a strong connection with them thanks to Van-kun" - Meiru replied as she remembered her friend - "Well, not with everyone because the Schnee clan were outcasts in the demon race, though they still had allies."
Yue was silent as she asked a little more about the demon clan of the past.
"Oh, they weren't much different" - Meiru replied with a sadistic smile on her delicate lips - "Bastards who only thought about power, I guess that makes them the favourite prey of Ehit and his minion"
Yue nodded weakly before turning her focus back to the city.
"Do you sense something?" - Meiru asked with a mysterious smile.
"No, just small magical sources, nothing that could be of any use to us" - Yue answered honestly.
"It's because you are not aware of one small detail, and that is that a barrier is covering the most important place in Verbergen" - answered Meiru seriously.
"The most important place?" - Yue asked while raising an eyebrow - "You mean the castle? If so, I regret to tell you that the demons have already entered the treasury".
"No, those are valueless items" - Meiru replied while shaking her head - "I'm sure Lyu-chan has the valuables stored in her [Inventory]."
"So?" - Yue asked with annoyance as she felt Meiru was playing with her.
"It's simple, follow me" - muttered Meiru as the two walked through Verbergen with the shadows serving as their protectors.
The duo continued to move forward until they reached the outskirts of Verbergen.
"A ruined shrine?" - Yue asked as she raised an eyebrow because she wasn't expecting this - "Wait.... Why did we come from inside Verbergen when we could have come from outside?"
"Because this is the only way we can get in" - Meiru replied as she pointed backwards.
Yue frowned, though her expression changed when she felt a small magical disturbance - "Magical sensors on the way..."
"Exactly, this is the only way to be able to enter the secret place" - Meiru replied as she released some of her mana to detect possible demons following them, a small safety measure, after all, the longer they stay anonymous, the longer it will take for the demons to react when they get the item they came to collect.
"Why don't you tell me what it is we came for?" - Yue asked with annoyance.
"Don't worry, we're about to arrive and you'll find out right away" - Meiru said seriously - "By the way, when I give you the signal, I recommend that you activate the most powerful barrier you can".
"I understand" - nodded Yue as the two vampires walked towards the shrine.
Silence remained between the two descendants of the blood race, until they reached a small corridor filled with roots.
Meiru kept her calm attitude while Yue showed a curious expression, after all, she did not expect such a place in Verbergen.
The two vampires continued walking, until they reached a huge metal door.
"When I count to three... activate your barrier" - Meiru said seriously.
"I understand" - nodded Yue as she started to channel her mana.
"One... two..." - Meiru muttered as she concentrated the mana in her fist and punched the metal door hard - "Three, now!"
Yue followed Meiru's instructions and activated the most powerful barrier she had, only to see a strange attack of light hit her almost immediately.
When the light disappeared, Yue saw how they were in front of a huge golden tree.
"This is the sacred tree of Verbergen, it is the reason for the natural barrier of the sea of trees" - said Meiru as she ran towards the centre.
Yue followed her closely as she listened to the place where they were.
"It's a tree that Lyu-chan planted to protect her people and used a divine stone as food," said Meiru as she watched golden roots fly in their direction.
The two vampires made an evasive maneuver, only to be met by a shot of light.
"Three!" - Meiru exclaimed as she watched a barrier surround them again - "Fuu! I'm thankful it was you who accompanied me, because if it had been anyone else, I would have turned into a lump of coal!"
Yue didn't respond, she just held out her hands and channeled huge fireballs which she launched at the roots.
Meiru smiled slightly before continuing to advance towards the central pedestal in front of the tree.
"You still won't tell me what it is we came for," Yue said as she threw fireballs at the roots that were trying to attack them, "Because I'm sure it's not the divine stone."
"Exactly, that stone has to be empty by now with all the mana consumption that the natural barrier covering the sea of trees needs, I mean, it's been centuries since Lyu-chan first lit it" - Meiru answered seriously - "What we have come to look for, is something similar, it's the core of the sacred tree"
"Its core?" - Yue asked while frowning - "Wait, that's useless to us, the core of a conscious tree, it only works with natural creatures like Dryads, Ents, or fairies."
"Indeed, but you're forgetting one detail, and that is that Cloud-kun is a Nidhogg" - Meiru replied as she took Yue by the hand and used her magic to turn them into puddles of water and slide away from the root attack that had come out of the ground - "Phew, that was a bit difficult, it's my first time trying to turn another person liquid."
Yue gave her a blank look because if Meiru wasn't sure if her plan would work, it was better for her (Yue) to use her ability and create another barrier rather than risk it.
"I know what you're thinking, but it was better my plan" - Meiru said while shaking her head - "Those roots are different, they are the ones that have been absorbing the mana from the divine stone the longest, because they are the ones closest to the core."
"I see, they could have absorbed the mana from my barrier and we would have been hit anyway" - Yue nodded as she looked around and noticed how the roots seemed to act more and more savage.
"The tree is scared because it knows that now that we are next to its core, we can kill it before it does anything" - Meiru said disdainfully as she narrowed her eyes - "I know you can understand me, so I'm going to give you a choice before I kill you."
[Meiru Melusine, you are a friend of my creator... I don't understand why you want to eliminate me...]
"It's simple, I need your core to save someone important to me and your creator, but since you've done an impressive job defending Lyu-chan's compatriots, I'm offering you a second option, one that I'm sure you wouldn't accept if I wasn't by your core's side" - Meiru said while frowning.
[Speak...]
"It's simple, I want you to become a seed with the remaining energy after I rip out your core, so you can survive if I plant you in a better place" - Meiru answered seriously.
[A seed? That's not feasible?]
"It's the only way you can survive and help your creator, besides, I'm sure if you help Cloud, you can benefit more than you think, after all, he knows where the world tree is" - said Meiru while trying to negotiate.
The sacred tree was silent because this proposal was tempting if it was true, although he was still a bit sceptical.
[If what you say is true.... Then why didn't my creator come directly to negotiate with me]?
"Because she's busy, I'm sure you have to feel where she is" - Meiru said seriously.
[Right... she's where the sacred spring used to be... I guess there must be something important there.]
"Yes, but that doesn't affect our negotiation, I only wish for one thing, that you give me an answer" - said Meiru neutrally - "Yes, or no".
[Can you swear by your bloodline that what you say is true?]
"You can be sure that my words are one hundred percent true, I swear by my ancestors, and if I lie, I will suffer the curse of blood" - Meiru replied as everyone waited a few seconds.
Yue remained silent as she shook her head. She knew what the blood curse was, it was a contract a vampire made to assure the contractor that they were not lying, and the consequences of breaking it were basically agonising pain and the loss of at least half of the breaker's vitality.
[That eases my worries, I accept your proposal.]
Meiru smiled slightly because this was good, she didn't want to kill the sacred tree because he was just trying to survive, and now that everything had ended properly, she didn't hesitate to take the core and rip it out.
The golden tree began to lose its lustre as it withered at great speed and shrank. When it was all over, all that remained was the core and a small sphere on the ground, the seed of the sacred tree.
