The group looked at each other as they thought about what to do.
"I think the most feasible option, would be to destroy the corpse and thus make sure nothing happens as we move forward..." - Yue said after analyzing the situation a bit - "After all, we are inside a maze, and anything can happen here."
Kaori and Shizuku looked at each other before nodding.
"Cloud, I think you're the most qualified to destroy that corpse with your weapons, so we'll save the mana of trying to attack that ice which is possibly resistant to magic" - Tio said as she walked towards the icy wall and tapped it faintly with her finger - "As I thought, I can feel how this ice seems to have similar properties to the walls of the Raisen maze..."
Cloud nodded as he drew his pistols and aimed in the direction of the corpse, creating two small explosions, and destroying the body - "Come on, we have a long way to go."
The group resumed their walk, not noticing how the part where the corpse had been before, began to shake for a few seconds before everything returned to normal.
* * * * *
"Demons, dozens of them, possibly killed during Freid's attempt to get the magic from this maze" - Cloud said as he put his hand on the ice and frowned - "Did anyone notice the races of the corpses?"
"The vast majority were demons, as you said, although there were some humans, dwarves and even elves among the victims" - Tio replied while frowning.
The group had been advancing through the icy corridors of the labyrinth, carefully observing the surrounding corpses that were becoming more and more numerous, to the point that Cloud decided that it was better to let them attack them because these had done nothing during the long journey they had traveled.
"We arrived at a new trifurcation" - said Yue while looking around and trying to feel the flow of the maze's mana, after all, the more mana concentrated, the more dangerous the path would be, but at the same time, the easier it would be to reach the final room, although to her growing irritation, all paths had a similar flow - "I'm sorry, I can't do anything..."
"No worries" - Cloud replied with a small smile, though his expression changed when he heard the sound of something cracking - "Heads up, something's coming!"
"A monster?" - Shea asked as she prepared to fight.
"I'm not sure, but the mana you give off is weak" - Yue replied as she looked around, frowning because the sources of mana she had managed to sense, were not only coming from the roads, but also - "Walls... whatever is coming against us, it also came through the walls."
The girls stood back to back and prepared to fight.
Cloud had also sensed this strange behavior, so he drew his pistols and looked around, only to notice how the corpses that had passed by until recently, began to move across the ice - "Are they alive? No, that's impossible..."
"It's likely that something or someone is controlling their bodies" - Tio replied as she looked at the girls - "Are they going to try?"
"Of course" - Shizuku replied as she firmly gripped her katana.
"Zombies, I hate zombies" - said Kaori with disgust - "I guess this is my time to shine".
"I don't think they're zombies" - said Shizuku as she frowned - "Or at least not like you think"
"Yue..." - Tio said with a frown.
"Yeah, those corpses don't have a core, which means they're not monsters" - Yue said with a frown - "I think it would be better to compare them to the golems we faced in the Raisen maze."
"That doesn't change our situation at all, I'm going to test how strong they are" - replied Shizuku as she took a leap and saw how the zombies seemed to have detected her because they started running in her direction.
Shizuku didn't hesitate, she started slicing through all the zombies that were coming towards her, she could even feel her experience rising like foam.
It took her a few minutes to finish them all off, leaving a room full of the zombies' severed parts.
"That was easy" - Shizuku said as she prepared to return to her colleagues, only to feel a shiver down her back, so she quickly ran a safe distance before turning and observing her opponents - "Those things..."
"They're rebuilding..." - Remia said in terror as she saw how the pale zombies were using their arms to reassemble themselves, as if they were assemblable toys.
"This will be an eternal battle unless we find whatever is controlling these corpses..." - Cloud said with a frown as he looked around and tried to more carefully sense the flow of mana, though the results were not very favorable.
"I'm going to try to concentrate mana on my eyes to improve my magic vision" - Yue said while looking at Cloud and Tio, I want them to protect me while I gather enough mana.
"What do we do?" - Kaori asked while looking at the zombies - "Do we keep fighting?"
"Yes, these enemies are an infinite source of experience, you can use them to level up as much as you want" - answered Cloud as he continued trying to feel the mana from the frozen chamber - "Dude, I want you to give support when you see that they can't take anymore..."
"Understood" - nodded Tio while squinting his eyes.
The girls started fighting with everyone because this was their best time to close the gap they had with the others, though Kaori was the most relaxed because she was using these moments to refine control of her skills.
"[Water Breath]!" - Remia exclaimed as she put her hands in front of her mouth as if she was clutching a trumpet and expelled a powerful surge of water that quickly turned to ice because of how low the temperature was in the area they were in.
"Good job, Remia-san!" - Shizuku exclaimed as her eyes glittered slightly - "Kenjutsu: Hyakkaryōran (Sword Art: Abundance of Flowers)!"
Shizuku quickly unsheathed her sword and put it away, only for after a few seconds the sound of something breaking to echo in the place.
Remia watched in surprise as the ice covering the zombies sheared into hundreds of tiny fragments that seemed to have taken the shape of cherry blossom petals.
"I see you managed to master a new technique, Shizuku-chan" - smiled Kaori as she saw how her friend had improved again.
"The training in the gravitational room has worked wonders" - Shizuku replied as she nodded - "If it wasn't for the enormous pressure I made my body resist, I wouldn't have been able to do so many attacks in a matter of seconds, although the temporary magic also helped."
Remia quickly ran to the red-eyed girl and helped her maintain her stance because she knew she should be tired, and she wasn't wrong, after all, temporary magic consumed too much of her mana, though this was a small price compared to checking how much she had improved.
"It's my turn, so rest for a while" - Remia said as she let Shizuku rest next to Kaori, who was using her magic so she could help recharge her best friend's mana faster.
Cloud smiled from a distance as he saw how Remia was trying to enter the monster territory like the others.
"[Water Festival]!" - Remia exclaimed as she channeled her mana into her hands and extended them towards the sky, only for those present to notice how it began to rain, though just like her previous technique, this one turned into a shower of ice stakes that began to shatter the small shards Shizuku had created.
Remia smiled when she saw this, though her expression changed as she watched the broken fragments begin to dissolve and blend together, once again creating the corpses that had attacked them earlier - ". . ."
"I wasn't expecting that..." - Shea said as she picked up her hammer and prepared to fight, and while she didn't need that many levels, it was best to be prepared in case things got out of control.
The zombies let out a roar of fury before running back to their opponents.
"[Barrier]!"- exclaimed Kaori as she created a barrier around the group, which was being besieged by the zombies, which slowly started to increase in number - "Cloud..."
"I can feel it, how the other zombies in this place are starting to gather in this location" - Cloud said with a frown - "I think we need to find the one responsible for this as soon as possible, because if we keep this up, we may die from having to deal with so many corpses that seem to have no end..."
Kaori's expression darkened slightly, though it quickly returned to normal because she knew that none of them would give up.
Yue quickly opened her eyes, which had ceased to be red and were now multi-colored, demonstrating her affinity for all the elements.
"Can you see anything, Yue-dono?" - Tio asked earnestly.
"Yes... follow me," Yue replied as she looked down one of the corridors.
Cloud looked at Yue, then looked at the zombies - "Go, I'm going to buy some time."
