「A "Valentine" Letter Written by Hoku in Third Grade」

Dear Friend,
We wrote Valentines in class today, and Miss said we could write to anyone, so I decided to write this one.
I keep a wooden puzzle box in my neighbor's back garden with small things inside. They are not really for playing with. I just like having them.
There is a locket with a dented frame and a broken animal collar.
Yesterday, I was collecting rubbish when a small stone hit my cheek. It looks like half a heart, so I put it in with them.
When you come over, I can show you everything properly. For now, I will keep it where only I know.
I think friends stay near each other a lot. Maybe when we are bigger, we will live in the same house, and we can hide it somewhere proper.
We can have a black cat that walks wherever it wants and sleeps wherever it feels like.
Sometimes I think about it, sitting by the window when it rains, watching outside without moving very much. I think that would be nice to see.
I drew a picture of it at the bottom, but it looked blue, so I scribbled it out.
