*Audra's POV*
The clock glared at me in blocky red digits: 6:14.
For a moment, I didn't understand what I was looking at. My neck throbbed from the awkward angle of the couch, and a dull ache pulsed behind my eyes. I hadn't meant to fall asleep, but somewhere after 3:35, I must have drifted off. I remembered staring at the numbers, willing them to change, forcing myself to stay awake in case he arrived. And then…
Nothing.
The thought hit me before I had time to defend myself against it.
'He's not coming.'
I sat upright too quickly, the blanket sliding to the floor, my chest tightening as if the air had thinned.
No. No, that wasn't true.
It couldn't be.
He was coming. He had to be. Something had delayed him, that was all. The officers would have said something if there'd been a problem. They would have come for me.
Wouldn't they?
