Chapter 18 - A New Smell in the Castle

Back at the cell where Marie was imprisoned, she still couldn't use her voice. It seemed like the King had intended for her to die a mute along with whatever she knows. At this crucial moment where she was about to be killed, all she had on her mind were thoughts of her precious brother and teacher, Aaron. Strangely, she never thought she had it in her to miss one so much. If only she spent more time with him.

Everything cleared up in her mind. The clear realisation that the King was behind Aaron's death became clearer than it was in her heart, perhaps this was her fate. Tears rolled down the corner of her eyes down the sides of her face as she lay on her back with one hand over her face.

It may be all too late.

A few days later, during the night while she was sleeping on the hard prison floor, a voice called out to her, almost like a whisper. She rose up quickly in a shock, only to find someone inside her cell.

She still couldn't talk, so she could only stare at the shadowy figure that stood before her. The shadowy figure exposed itself under the moon light that pierced through the small prison window, as it dispelled whatever spell was keeping itself anonymous.

Out of the shadow came Uruak as he stepped forward, casting a small illuminating spell that caused his finger to glow a dull faint green.

The moment this happened, Marie impulsively asked, "what do you want?" To her surprise, her voice had recovered. She only thought of saying it in her head but coincidentally voiced it out.

"How about a thank you first for bringing back your voice? I am not going to waste much time and just go straight to the point. I'm here to set you free." Uruak said as he examined the prison cell with his dull green eyes.

The proposal made by Uruak sounded ridiculous. Why would he want to set her free? Again, the King has nothing to gain by testing her now. But still, this offer was suspicious.

Uruak assured her that he had used a noise gate spell on the cell, so no one could hear them. He assured her that there was no ulterior motive in his current actions. But even though Marie had only ever saw him a few times in her entire life, which was at the forest and in the castle, she could tell he was lying.

The only thing was, she had no other choice at this point, if this was a trap, she would be killed, and if she remained here, she would still be killed. So she chose the option presented to her by the mischievous Medicine King Uruak, there was no other choice at this moment. If she was going to die either way, at least she would choose the one that offered her a chance at life, not to go down without a fight.

Immediately she agreed, Urauk took her hand, and the next second, they were outside the cell in some alley.

"You are free, do well not to be caught now, it would be sad if my efforts go to waste" Marie nodded in response as he disappeared into the darkness. "The night is sweet for escape." Uruak's voice loomed over the alley before disappearing.

Marie escaped the capital in no time having regained use of her magic that had been sealed as procedure after entering the cell. Firstly, she used a teleportation spell of hers and appeared in a place around the kingdom's section where lower commoners live. She was able to change her cloths there.

As she appeared from a mirage, she wasted not ime picking clothes she needed form the line there. She had successfully covered phase one of her escape plan unseen, only for her to turn around and meet the gaze of a kid who had caught her directly in the act. 'Shit!' She exclaimed as she used her spell to disappear out of sight of the young kid.

"Wow.. A fairy.." The young kid gasped in surprise and excitement as he watched Marie disappear into nothing, just like she was never there. Since her spell created an optical illusion that resembles a mirage, it must have looked magical to the young one, hopefully, he doesn't say anything to the adults.

"Of course that won't happen, he definitely will!" Marie screamed in her whisper to herself as she changed clothes and after that lit her former ones on fire after taking every valuable she could from it.

Back at the castle, the soldiers were causing an awful racket. James, the man who questioned Marie had resolved himself to free her that night, even though it meant his death. At the hour he planned to do the deed, he went into the cell where she was kept, only to see an empty cell room which is safe to say, shocked him to no end.

Without thinking it through, he rushed outside and almost shouted as he asked the guards stationed out side who were with him in his plan and had let him enter, "Where is she! She's not in there!" He said. He managed to suppress his voice a bit, not to alert the others, but he wasn't too lucky.

While they discussed amongst themselves, another guard who was patrolling the area and managed to hear James earlier left for the castle at once, probably trying to claim the merit of reporting such information. What the men he saw earlier were doing there didn't concern him, all he knew was that he heard well.

"My Lord, bad news. The prisoner has escaped!" The soldier said as he busted open the door to the throne room with a serious look on his face. After haering this, the king turned to face his advisor who he had put in charge of taking and monitoring Marie while she was in the cell.

The fear he felt from the king's stare at that moment could not be explained. If the king was to blame him for this incident, the punishment would be nothing less than the death of one of his family members and himself, if not all of them. Although he was the advisor to the king, it was only in name. Gerald needed no advisor; he was just a dignified lackey of the king, a pawn.

In a calm voice, the King asked the guard as he turned towards him. "Is that so? Bring before me the guards on duty, now." As the guard was about to leave, Gerald stooped him, "It would be faster if I went there myself, let's go."

"Yes, my Lord."

The guard escorted the king to the cell room Marie was in, and as soon as they got there, Gerald could sense that someone had used magic not long ago, 'I thought he(Uruak) made it so she couldn't use magic?... He didn't?' At that moment, the guard said.

"It's like she just vanished into thin air."

"Thin air you say." Gerald said just before storming out of the cell angrily and went to the room Uruak was in.

"Uruak! Explain yourself! What do you mean by this? Why didn't you follow the plan?! Answer me!" It was clear that the king had completely lost his temper. His cool and calm self no more, it had been thrown out of the room through the window. The advisor almost shit himself because of the pressure the king was emitting from his body, and he wasn't even close to the king.

In response, Uruak stood and walked up to Gerald, "I would advise you to calm yourself and talk to me in a normal tone, I quite dislike people raising their voice at me." Gerald didn't listen, and a second later the pressure increased. "You know quite well that you can't fight me, not in that old body. You will die." Uruak released his own magic pressure, completely and effortlessly suppressing Gerald's without even trying. It was at this moment Gerald realised that even amongst the strongest, there were the strongest.

Now, it might have already been too late to do anything about the situation outside the room both men were in. Countless people had either produced manure for their underwear, or moisturized their dresses and trousers. The advisor's case was quite critical since for whatever reason, he was on shorts that day. His own waste came rolling down the hairy slop in the presence of some maids and guards. Truly, an unredeemable sight.

They both returned their magic pressures to normal while staring at each other, one infuriated while the other calm.

"Now, why don't we settle down and talk. Gerald."
