Chapter 399 - Miracle (2/2)

Loma's brightness flickered and dimmed, making Alaric want to punish himself even though he didn't know what he'd done wrong. 

She shook her head. Caramel waves trembled against her cheeks while something else trembled in the downcast turn of her eyes. A thread of sadness knotted in her voice.

"No. I don't have magic. My father is sure of it. He tells me all the time." The warm toffee of her gaze lifted to meet his, pleading. "And I'd rather you not think of me as the Master's daughter. Can't you just think of me as Loma? Please?"

Alaric nodded immediately, upset that she felt like she had to plead with him for anything. His real purpose in life revealed itself to his heart with crystalline certainty. It had absolutely nothing to do with being the next True Core.

"Of course. You're just Loma. So what if you're the Master's daughter." He gave her a sideways look, one corner of his mouth lifting at his own boldness. "I'm not impressed."
