Chapter 471 - Replace What You Lost

Seven Sins System Chapter 471. Replace What You Lost

For a moment, I thought she might smile, but then her expression shifted to one of confusion as she took the necklace from me. Her fingers traced the contours of the pendant, and I could see the realization dawning on her face as she frowned. "Wait… This isn't my necklace," she muttered.

"Yeah, I just created it myself," I admitted.

Her eyes widened slightly, and she looked at me with a mixture of disbelief and something else—something I couldn't quite place. I could see her processing what I had said, her gaze shifting from the necklace to me and back again. There was a moment of hesitation, a flicker of something in her eyes that made my chest tighten.

Without thinking, I reached out and took the necklace from her hand, the gold chain slipping through my fingers as I moved to put it around her neck. But before I could fasten it, she retreated, stepping back and holding up a hand to stop me.

"What do you want to do?" she asked, her voice wary. There was a note of suspicion in her tone, a guardedness that hadn't been there before. She looked at me as if trying to figure out my intentions, as if she wasn't sure what to make of this unexpected gesture.

I hesitated, the necklace still dangling from my hand as I tried to find the right words.

What was I trying to do?

Was this just a way to ease the guilt that had been gnawing at me, or was there something more to it?

I wasn't even sure myself, but I knew that I wanted to do something, anything, to bridge the gap that had grown between us.

"I just wanted to give you something," I said finally, my voice softer than before. "Something that might… I don't know… replace what you lost. That necklace was from me, after all, and I took my mom's favorite necklace design as an example. But I never had a chance to give it to you officially. You just found it among those lowly mortals' corpses." The words came out more easily now, but there was a weight to them, a weight I hadn't expected to feel. I paused, the words catching in my throat, as if they were too heavy to push out.

"So I thought…" I hesitated again. This wasn't supposed to be difficult. It was just a necklace, just a piece of metal and stone, but it felt like so much more. I swallowed, forcing the words out. "I need to give it to you properly this time."

I had never intended for this to be anything more than a gesture, a way to make up for what she had lost. But now, standing here, it felt like I was offering more than just a piece of jewelry. I was offering a piece of myself, something I hadn't realized I was holding back.

Puriel didn't reply immediately. She just looked at me, her eyes searching mine for something—what, I couldn't say. For a moment, I thought she might reject the gesture, that she would see through my attempt to bridge the gap between us and turn away. But then, without a word, she stepped closer.

Her hands moved, lifting her long hair up and out of the way, a silent permission for me to proceed. She didn't say anything, didn't ask any more questions, but her actions spoke volumes. This was her way of allowing me to put the necklace around her neck, to give her something that could replace what she had lost.

I didn't speak either. Instead, I carefully took the necklace in both hands and leaned in, bringing the chain around her neck. The scent of her hair, faintly floral and so familiar, filled the space between us.

My hands lingered for a moment longer than necessary, my fingers brushing lightly against the nape of her neck. The contact was brief, but it felt charged. I could feel the warmth of her skin, the softness of her hair, and for a moment, I was tempted to stay there.

Puriel's hand instinctively went to the pendant, her fingers tracing the smooth surface of the stone. The simple act seemed to hold so much weight, as if she were trying to memorize every detail, to let the necklace become a part of her again. I could see the blush on her face.

"Thank you," she said in a soft voice, almost too quiet to hear. Her words were sincere, stripped of the usual sharpness that often accompanied our exchanges. There was something vulnerable in her tone, something I wasn't used to hearing from her.

Normally, this would be the perfect moment to throw in a tease, to mock her for blushing like a mortal schoolgirl over a simple necklace. It was a normal thing for a devil like me. But as I stood there, watching her, I found that I didn't have the mood for it. The words that would normally come so easily were stuck in my throat, tangled up with everything else I couldn't quite express.

Instead, I just nodded, the gesture awkward and stiff. "You're welcome," I said, my voice lacking its usual edge. It felt strange to respond so simply, without the usual sarcasm or bite. But it also felt right, as if anything more would have cheapened the moment.

Puriel looked up at me, her eyes meeting mine for softness for the first time. There was no anger in her gaze, no frustration or resentment—just a quiet gratitude that made me feel uncomfortably exposed. I wasn't used to this, to being seen like this by her, and I wasn't sure how to react.

I turned around awkwardly. "I've said what I needed to say, and I've done what I needed to do," I said, my tone a little more brusque than I intended. "I'll excuse myself now."

Without waiting for her to respond, I opened a portal, the swirling darkness forming in front of me. Before stepping through, I glanced back at her. "You need to return now," I added, my voice a little softer. "It's getting late."

I didn't wait for her reply or reaction. I wasn't sure I could handle whatever might come next—the gratitude, the questions, or the unspoken things. So, without another word, I stepped into the portal.
