Chapter 3 - 1/ The Pandora's box

Beneath a full moon that lit up a starless sky, music could be heard, mixed with shouting: a party was underway on the edge of a beach, the sound of the waves drowned out by the atmosphere. The party was taking place along the beautiful Plage des Dames in Noirmoutier, France. A place that, by day, was a paradise nestled in a forest of maritime pines, with its old wooden pier stretching out toward the sea like a bridge. But that night, the place had been taken over by students who had decided to throw a huge party, and at that very moment it was in full swing. It was 11:30 p.m.

"This party is seriously awesome, woo, we're gonna go home wasted tonight!" shouted a young man, a glass of alcohol in his hand.

"Nathan, you're already hammered, slow down a bit," exclaimed another young man who seemed to be his friend.

"Shut up, Lucas, and have some fun, you haven't touched a single drop all night. You're the only one who hasn't been drinking tonight, let loose a little and try to have a good time."

"Let me remind you that I have to drive you all home, and I don't want us all ending up wrapped around a wall. I get the feeling you don't remember what happened last time, Nathan," Lucas retorted.

"That was a tiny little accident, you're such a killjoy. Come on, let's go dance with some girls, at least you'll have some fun."

The two young men began to enjoy the evening like all the students who had come here to have fun and let off the stress of exams. The wind, meanwhile, was starting to blow a little harder, the waves were striking the shore, and time was slipping by. The minutes passed one by one, and the students sank into euphoria, alcohol and even sex.

11:58 p.m.

What they hadn't noticed was that the sky was gradually changing color. Nor had they noticed the wind that had risen, or the waves crashing ever harder against the beach and the pier. The music and the atmosphere had cut them off from the outside world.

11:59 p.m.

And suddenly, the sky was lit up by an intense red glow, and this time everyone looked up at the sky, torn out of the world of the party. What they now saw was a moon that had turned completely red, illuminating the beach. The crowd marveled at the unexpected event unfolding before their eyes.

"Whoa, it's so beautiful!" some exclaimed.

That festive night was marked by an event as beautiful as it was unexpected: blue lightning began to fill the sky with a great crash. It made some of the people there jump as they watched the bolts sweep across the sky even though there wasn't a single cloud.

Admiring this phenomenon that resembled nothing known in human history, everyone watched the magnificent spectacle with curiosity, but also with a small knot in their stomach. And rightly so, for it is sometimes said that anything synonymous with beauty can be fatal!

Midnight struck!

And with a heavy crash, a gigantic blue bolt of lightning struck the pier, making the crowd shudder to the point of frightening some of them.

Where the lightning had struck, a kind of circular blue door was clearly visible at the end of the pier. It spun like a whirlpool and gave off a brilliant glow.

The least drunk and the most sensible called the police to report the phenomenon. But who would believe such a thing? Meanwhile, those carried along by alcohol and curiosity had moved closer to the pier.

"Come on, let's go see what it is," said Nathan, his eyes narrowed a little by the alcohol.

"Are you crazy! Stay here, you've had too much to drink, it might be dangerous!" Lucas warned, panicked and clear-headed.

"Ugh, leave me alone! Hey, guys, let's go check out that thing," Nathan shouted to his friends and the other boys there.

The daring ones had set out onto the pier, drawing closer to the thing. The crowd watched them from a distance, some with a knot in their stomach. Lucas watched his friend and the others arrive in front of the portal.

"Whoa, this thing is amazing!" said Nathan, marveling at the phenomenon.

Under the influence of alcohol and out of curiosity, the young man passed his hand through it, under the worried eyes of the other students.

"Hey! Guys, my hand goes right through! You should try it, it's a really weird feeling!" he exclaimed, amused.

But the reckless and the foolish are always the first to die.

"Ahhh! Ahhh! Something grabbed my arm!" he screamed, distress taking hold of him.

"Hold him, hold him!" his friends cried out in panic as he was sucked into the blue whirlpool.

Despite the others' efforts to hold him back and keep him from being dragged in, he disappeared into the thing. Everyone was now unable to look away, frozen by fear, the seconds at that moment seeming to last for hours.

Then, after a moment in which everyone had stopped breathing, Nathan calmly stepped back out of the thing, a smile on his lips. Seeing his friends' horrified faces, he couldn't help laughing, which outraged them.

"Damn it, you're such an idiot!" one of them protested.

"If you guys could have seen your faces, it was really…"

To everyone's bewilderment, his head was torn off and flew away in a spray of blood; his body collapsed to the ground. His head landed at Lucas's feet. Lucas looked down, his breathing slowly quickening. Nathan's head stared up at him, his face livid, his eyes wide open, blood pouring from his torn neck.

Fear had instinctively seized him, keeping him from moving; he only managed to raise his head. Out of the thing came a large creature that in some ways resembled a lion. But a lion did not tear off a head in a single blow, and this creature was far more imposing than a lion. It had bright red skin and some kind of horns on top of its skull, but the worst came when several of these creatures emerged.

The trembling crowd, paralyzed by fear, realized one thing. Staying here could only mean one thing: death! Panic spread; the crowd was now running in every direction, driven by the instinct to survive.

Faced with the commotion, the newly emerged creatures let out cries as though sounding the start of the hunt. Those closest to them were tracked down and devoured alive.

"Is this hell?" said Lucas, faced with the sight.

In a police station not far away, several officers were talking among themselves and seemed to be getting ready.

"We got a call from several young people saying a blue door supposedly opened near the beach."

"Could it be connected to what happened earlier?" a colleague asked.

"Probably, but this blue portal story is more likely down to a lot of alcohol and drugs that must have made them hallucinate," another suggested.

"Young people today are a real plague," another complained.

"You can say that again! Come on, let's go make a few arrests," said the one who seemed to be the team leader.

They headed to the scene and, once there, they noticed that the moonlit sky, clear and starless until then, was hidden by clouds. The place was now darker without natural light when they got out of their vehicle. So they advanced through the pine forest with flashlights to reach the beach.

"There's no noise at all, that's pretty weird for a party, isn't it?" asked one officer.

"It is weird, especially since these parties are usually really loud," the leader replied. They had already gone quite far.

"Oh my God!" screamed a policewoman, falling to the ground.

The leader saw his colleague's face, pale and terrified, as she pointed at a tree. He turned his flashlight in the direction she indicated and saw the dismembered body of a young woman in the branches, her guts hanging out in the open air.

He vomited instinctively; the sight of the body was unbearable, and a nauseating stench of blood and shit came with it. And another officer, moving the light a little farther, revealed many other horribly mutilated corpses littering the ground by the hundreds.

Panic, fear and stress seized them; their hearts and breathing quickened.

Suddenly, a noise in the foliage petrified them, and they turned around in terror. Their weapons pointed toward the sound, they finally saw a young man emerge from the bushes, his eyes and face bright red. The young man in question was Lucas, facing the men, scared to death.

"Don't move! What happened here!?" the leader yelled.

"I don't have time to explain, run to the car! Now!" he said, running toward them.

"I said don't move!" the man bellowed, but the young man kept running toward them.

But everything changed when, behind him, the creatures appeared, revealing blood-covered fangs still holding bits of human flesh. The officers stood frozen while the young man was already well ahead of them, and the leader, without hesitation, began to follow him.

"Run!" he shouted to his men.

But he heard gunshots: two of his colleagues, who hadn't managed to move, paralyzed by fear, were firing their weapons. Their bullets apparently had no effect whatsoever on the creatures, and they were attacked, their cries of pain echoing as they were devoured.

The leader ran at full speed with the two others who had pushed past their fear and listened to his orders. But as they ran a few meters apart, one of them was suddenly cut in two, spilling his entrails onto the ground. It happened before the eyes of the two others, the leader and the remaining policewoman, who kept going. But the woman was suddenly pounced on by one of the creatures.

"Ahhhh!" she screamed, carried off into the bushes by the creature.

After a frantic run, he finally reached the car, the young man already behind the wheel, ready to go. He got in without wasting time, just before something crashed onto the windshield. He saw the body of his colleague flattened against it, bloodied, with one eye missing.

"Save… Save me…" she begged, her face covered in blood.

"Drive, what are you waiting for?" he shouted at the young man in a panic.

The woman's face fell at her leader's attitude.

"Please! Please! I'm begging you, I have children!" she screamed, her voice trembling.

"Fucking drive!" he kept yelling.

The young man started driving while the body of the young woman, who was still begging to be spared, slowly slid down until it ended up under the wheels, the sound of her body being crushed beneath them sending shivers down their spines. But it didn't matter to them, and especially not to him: they had managed to escape.

They returned to the police station to warn everyone, mobilizing the whole town. But the problem was that this phenomenon wasn't limited to the beach, or even to the town or the country. No, it went far beyond all that: it was a global problem, and everywhere monsters were emerging from blue portals. In every city in the world, chaos had taken over places and hearts alike. And when the clouds had finally left the sky, a new phenomenon was observed: the red moon had turned black and was hiding the sun, plunging the entire Earth into a night of terror for a whole week. This night of terror for all of humanity was named the Great Night.
