Curling up in the chair beside the window, I stared out over the moonlit city and lost myself to thought, enjoying the momentary peace before smiling softly as someone came to ruin it almost immediately after I began to savor it.
That person was of course Anput, and where a few weeks ago I would have been genuinely irritated by her suddenly jumping onto my lap while I was deep in thought that same irritation simply couldn't take me like it used to.
Not when I could smell this faint, barely noticeable hint of something else on this Jackalkin, something that was unmistakably... us; Mother had told me recently that the smell was going to get stronger and that it was something only races so closely attuned to blood could smell, so most likely it was just me who could notice it.
