Something felt completely off. It was coming to dawn, and the night had been peaceful. He did not expect an attack at this hour; however, he was not willing to leave anything to chance. War had taught him that enemies often chose the moment of greatest complacency.

It could not surprise him if their enemies had been shadowing them secretly from the moment they left the battle site. They must have been patient. Waiting patiently for the perfect moment to attack, when they least expected it.

That hour was now.

Leo Augustin and Alexander Hugo obeyed immediately. They kept quiet.

Leo Augustin held his breath. He had sensed it earlier – the strange quietness. Now their Commander was confirming his worst fears. He wanted to speak, to confirm his suspicions with him. But he restrained himself, knowing that now was not the best time to interrupt the Commander.
