Though surely some people would die from the fall... But back then they would jump even in a certain death situation! No need to mention the better survival chances now.
What's more important is that nobody would believe they'd surely fail before hitting the ground... Even those with notoriously bad hand-eye coordination would somehow have an inexplicable confidence during this craze of jumping.
