Chapter 8 - The Union of Claws

Declan's chest rose and fell with heavy breaths, his wounds raw and unbandaged, but his green eyes burned with a fierce determination. Around them, the pack moved with a quiet reverence, their gazes flickering between their alpha and the omega who had fought beside him. Conall approached, his auburn hair streaked with dirt and blood, his expression a mix of exhaustion and respect.

"It's over," he said, his voice low. "The Blackthorns are retreating. Without Cillian, the Fomorian Fang is in disarray. We've won—for now."

Declan nodded, his grip tightening on Saoirse's hand. "Good. Gather the council. We need to secure the borders and plan our next move. This victory won't go unanswered."

Conall hesitated, his gaze shifting to Saoirse. "And her?" he asked, his tone careful but curious. "She's proven herself, Declan. The pack's talking. They're calling her a warrior."

Saoirse's heart stuttered, a flush creeping up her neck. She'd fought to survive, to protect what mattered—not for recognition. But the weight of Conall's words, the shift in his demeanor, stirred something within her. She wasn't just an omega anymore. She was something more.

Declan's lips twitched, a rare, genuine smile breaking through his stern facade. "She's more than a warrior," he said, his voice steady and proud. "She's my mate. And she'll stand with me as Luna."

The word hung in the air, heavy with meaning. Luna. The alpha's chosen, the heart of the pack. Saoirse's breath caught, her eyes snapping to Declan's. She'd never imagined such a role—not when she'd fled Erynn's Veil, not when she'd stumbled into Lugh's Claw seeking only freedom. But the bond between them pulsed, a living thread that wove their fates together, and she felt the truth of it in her bones.

Conall dipped his head, a gesture of acceptance, and turned to carry out Declan's orders. The camp buzzed with renewed energy as word of the alpha's declaration spread, whispers rippling through the pack like wind through the trees. Saoirse stood frozen, her mind racing, until Declan gently tugged her toward his tent.

"Come," he said, his voice softer now, meant only for her. "We need to clean up. And we need to talk."

Inside the tent, the air was cool and dim, the lantern casting flickering shadows across the furs and wooden table. Declan released her hand to fetch a basin of water and a cloth, his movements stiff from his injuries. Saoirse watched him, her chest tight with a mix of emotions she couldn't name.

"Sit," she said, stepping forward to take the cloth from him. "Let me."

He raised an eyebrow but obeyed, settling onto a chair with a faint grunt of pain. Saoirse dipped the cloth into the water, wringing it out before gently pressing it to the gash on his shoulder. He hissed, his muscles tensing, but he didn't pull away.

"You didn't have to do that," she said quietly, her hands steady as she cleaned the blood from his skin.

"Call me Luna. You didn't have to give me that."

Declan's hand caught hers, stilling her movements. His green eyes locked onto hers, intense and unwavering. "I didn't give you anything you hadn't already earned," he said. "You fought for this pack, Saoirse. You stood against Cillian, risked your life for us. You're not just my mate—you're our Luna. The pack sees it. I see it."

Her throat tightened, tears prickling at the corners of her eyes. "I don't know if I'm ready," she admitted, her voice barely above a whisper. "I've never been anything but an omega. I don't know how to lead."

Declan's grip softened, his thumb brushing against her knuckles. "You don't have to know," he said, echoing his words from before. "You've got strength, courage, and a heart that doesn't bend. That's enough. The rest, we'll learn together."

The bond flared between them, warm and steady, and Saoirse felt it settle into her, a quiet certainty replacing her doubt. She nodded, a small smile tugging at her lips. "Together," she agreed.

Declan pulled her closer, his hands settling on her waist as he rested his forehead against hers. "Marry me," he murmured, the words a low rumble that sent a shiver down her spine. "Not because of the bond, not because of the pack, but because I want you by my side. Always."

Saoirse's breath hitched, her heart pounding with a mix of fear and longing. She'd run from a marriage forced upon her, from a life of chains. But this—this was different. This was a choice, a partnership, a promise of something real. She leaned in, her lips brushing against his in a kiss that sealed her answer before she spoke it.

"Yes," she whispered, her voice trembling but sure. "I'll marry you."

The wedding took place three days later, under the sprawling branches of the ancient oak at the heart of Lugh's Claw. The pack gathered in a circle, their faces weary but proud, their wounds bandaged and their spirits lifted by the promise of unity. The air was crisp with the scent of pine and earth, the moon a crescent sliver overhead, casting a gentle light over the scene.

Saoirse wore a simple dress of deep green, stitched by the pack's seamstresses from fabric dyed with forest herbs. Her hair hung loose, woven with wildflowers, a stark contrast to the tattered white gown she'd fled in. She felt no trace of that fear now, only a quiet strength as she walked toward Declan.

He stood waiting, his dark hair tousled by the wind, his tunic a rich brown that matched the earth beneath their feet. His green eyes shone with a warmth she'd come to crave, a steady anchor in the storm of her life. Aisling stood beside him, her auburn braid gleaming, a rare smile softening her sharp features. Conall flanked his other side, his golden eyes watchful but approving.

The ceremony was simple, rooted in the traditions of Lugh's Claw. An elder stepped forward, a woman with silver hair and hands gnarled by time, her voice carrying the weight of generations. She spoke of the pack, of strength and loyalty, of the bond that tied alpha and Luna to their people. She bound their hands with a cord of woven vines, symbolizing their union, their shared purpose.

"Do you, Declan O'Rourke, take Saoirse Brennan as your mate, your Luna, to stand as one in peace and war, to guard this pack with your life?" the elder asked.

Declan's gaze never left Saoirse's. "I do," he said, his voice strong and clear, resonating through the clearing.

"And do you, Saoirse Brennan, take Declan O'Rourke as your mate, your alpha, to stand as Luna, to nurture and defend this pack with all that you are?"

Saoirse's heart swelled, the weight of the words settling into her like roots into soil. "I do," she said, her voice steady, her eyes locked on his.

The elder raised their bound hands, her voice rising. "By the will of the pack and the strength of the bond, you are one. Alpha and Luna, united in purpose, blessed by the spirits of the wild."

A cheer erupted from the pack, howls mingling with shouts of approval. Declan pulled Saoirse close, his lips finding hers in a kiss that was both fierce and tender, a promise sealed before their people. The bond between them blazed, a fire that warmed her from within, and she felt the pack's acceptance wash over her like a tide.

As the celebration began—fires lit, food shared, and laughter rising into the night—Saoirse stood beside Declan, her hand in his. Aisling approached, a wooden cup of mead in her hand, her expression softer than Saoirse had ever seen it.

"You're one of us now," Aisling said, handing her the cup. "Luna or not, you've earned it."

Saoirse took the mead, a smile tugging at her lips. "Thank you," she said. "For trusting me."

Aisling smirked, a glint of mischief in her eyes. "Don't get soft on me, omega. We've still got work to do."

Conall joined them, clapping Declan on the shoulder. "You've got yourself a fighter," he said, nodding to Saoirse. "She's going to keep you on your toes."

Declan chuckled, his arm slipping around Saoirse's waist. "I wouldn't have it any other way."

The night stretched on, the pack reveling in their victory and their new Luna. Saoirse danced with Declan under the stars, her bare feet sinking into the earth, her heart lighter than it had ever been. She'd found freedom, not in running, but in standing her ground—beside a mate who saw her as an equal, within a pack that had become her home.

But as the fires burned low and the pack settled into quiet, Saoirse knew the peace was temporary. The Blackthorns would return, and new threats would rise from the shadows. Yet, with Declan at her side and Lugh's Claw at her back, she felt ready. She was no longer just Saoirse Brennan, the runaway omega. She was

Saoirse O'Rourke, Luna of Lugh's Claw.

And she would fight for her place, her people, and her love.
