Chapter 48 - Chapter 48: First Shift At Work

Alex stepped out of the library into the midday sun. The hallways were emptying fast, students hurrying toward lunch or their next classes. The campus was loud and alive. Laughter in groups. The smell of food carts mixing with fresh-cut grass. Warm light filtering through the leaves overhead.

He decided to grab a sandwich at the snack shop near the east gate. Far better than cafeteria food.

Inside, the counter was lined with pre-made sandwiches wrapped in plastic. Chips in neat rows. A coffee machine hissing softly. The cashier barely glanced up as Alex ordered a turkey sandwich and a bag of chips.

The bench under the big tree was empty, shaded just enough to keep the heat bearable. He sat down, unwrapped the sandwich, and took a bite.

Students passed in waves. A group of girls giggling over phones. A guy jogging with earbuds in. Someone skateboarding too fast down the path. Ordinary and quiet.

Liza's voice slipped into his mind, light and casual.

'So~ what's the plan? And gosh, I miss the taste of food.'

Alex chewed. He already knew succubi could eat, but he still felt a little surprised at how much she was craving it.

"Really? I thought you only needed lust."

Liza laughed softly in his head. 'Of course I can survive without food. I just miss the taste. My tongue has cravings, you know~'

He leaned back against the bench, the wood warm from the sun. "Well, you need to create a physical body soon."

'I'm working on that~' Liza added playfully. 'That's why I'm telling you to spend more time with girls instead of being a lonely nerd.'

Alex shrugged, taking another bite. "I'm thinking more about the money. You're helping with magic, but I need to launder it somehow."

The money Liza created came out of thin air. A jobless college student with piles of cash would raise questions. He needed a cover. A real job.

Liza's tone softened just a little. 'Ah, you're smart. But you can rely on me for the money. Still, it's sweet you decided to help the mommy with her store.'

"Yeah," he said quietly, crumpling the empty sandwich wrapper. "She deserves it. Ash too."

He finished the chips, brushed the crumbs off his jeans, and stood. The bench creaked as he got up. For a moment it was just him, the breeze, and the distant hum of campus. No rush, no pressure.

Afternoon classes passed in the usual blur. More equations on the board, more notes in his notebook, the clock ticking slower than he liked. A classmate whispered something about "that viral model guy" in the row behind him, but Alex didn't connect it to himself. He stayed focused, crimson eyes on the old professor. Exams coming soon.

By the time the final bell rang, the sun was lower, painting the campus in soft gold. Alex stepped outside, bag over his shoulder, ready to call Anna.

But he saw her before he could pull out his phone.

Anna was pacing near the exit, phone in hand, scanning the crowd. The moment she spotted him, her face lit up.

"Darling!" she called, already walking toward him. "There you are!"

She reached him fast and linked her arm through his, pressing her body against his side. She was wearing a tight white tank top that strained against her chest, the fabric stretched thin over the heavy, soft swell of her breasts. An open red-and-black jacket hung over her shoulders, framing the deep curve of her cleavage. Skin-tight black leggings hugged her wide hips and the round, full curve of her ass, the fabric pulling taut with every step she took. Her slender waist dipped inward, accentuating the flare of her hips. Short blue hair bounced around her flushed, eager face.

Even Liza whistled in his head. 'Woah. That's a succubus in human flesh~'

"I was looking everywhere," Anna said, squeezing his arm. Her chest pressed warm and heavy against his side, the soft weight of her shifting with the movement. "Thought you ditched me for another girl or something~"

Alex stayed calm, a faint smile tugging his lips. "Just got out. Was about to call you."

Anna pouted, squeezing his arm tighter and pressing her body closer. The soft heat of her seeped through the thin fabric. "I've been ready since your message. I'm not looking for a part-time job, but since you asked, I can't refuse my darling." She leaned in close, her lips brushing his ear, her breath warm and teasing. "You look so handsome today. Makes me wanna take you to a motel instead."

She pulled back with a wink, then looped her other arm around his waist and started walking, pulling him along.

Alex let her. He was doing his best not to sneak glances. He had already given his word to Mary and didn't want to change plans.

They left campus. Anna decided they should walk so she could have more time to talk. Her body stayed pressed against his side, the soft weight of her brushing against him with every step.

"So~ tell me about this store. You know the owner, right? What's she like? Strict old woman? Kind? Money-hungry type?"

Alex kept it simple. "Mary's a good woman. She's nice and she works hard. She's struggling to keep the store by herself, so she asked for my help."

Anna hummed thoughtfully, her fingers tracing small circles on his arm. "And you'll be there every shift with me?" Her voice dropped lower. "Good. Means I get to see you in an apron. Bet you'll look handsome, darling~"

She pressed closer. "Maybe I'll accidentally drop something and bend over to pick it up. View from behind, you know?"

Alex smiled calmly. "Behave. It's work."

Anna laughed, soft and flirty. "Never. You like me naughty."

The convenience store came into view. Small building, slightly faded sign, warm lights glowing through the windows. Anna stayed glued to his side the whole way, arm linked tight, her body brushing against him constantly.

Inside, Mary was behind the counter arranging items on a shelf. She turned at the bell, and her eyes lit up when she saw Alex. A spark of something warm flashed across her face before she masked it with a smile.

"Alex!" She stepped around the counter, her voice carrying a quiet relief. "Been too long since you stopped by."

Mary was in her mid-thirties, with soft, mature curves. A simple button-up work shirt pulled tight across her chest, the fabric straining slightly at the buttons. Black pants hugged her wide hips and the full, round curve of her ass. Golden eyes that held both kindness and something warmer when they landed on him. Her gaze lingered for a beat, tracing his shoulders, his chest, his waist. Then she smiled and looked away.

A subtle flush touched her cheeks when she noticed Anna clinging to his arm. She swallowed it and stepped closer than necessary.

"I brought someone," Alex said. "Anna. For the job."

Anna straightened beside him, her grip tightening on his arm. Her eyes flicked over Mary, quick and appraising. A spark of something competitive lit up behind her green eyes. She hadn't expected a woman like this.

"Hi," Anna said brightly. "I'm Anna. I was wondering if I can have a part-time job here?"

Mary nodded, her smile polite but a little tight. She extended her hand, and the handshake with Anna lasted a beat longer than necessary. Her eyes darted back to Alex.

"Nice to meet you. I'm Mary, the owner. Alex said he'd bring someone reliable. I trust him." Her gaze slid to Alex, her voice dropping warmer. "Thanks for coming. Both of you."

She handed them green aprons. Her fingers brushed Alex's a little longer than Anna's, her eyes locking his for a moment. Quiet and warm.

"Try these on. We'll see how you do first shift. Stocking, register, basic stuff. Then we can agree on the hours. Why not test a quick trial now?"

Anna took hers eagerly, stepping right up to Alex and pressing the fabric against his chest. Her fingers lingered as she reached around to tie the strings behind his back, her body pressing warm against his side.

"Looks good on you," she murmured, low and teasing. "Very hardworking."

Mary watched from the counter, her arms crossed and pushing her chest up slightly. Her smile stayed, but her eyes narrowed just a fraction.

"Apron fits well," she said after a moment, her voice smooth and warm. "You'll do great here." Her gaze flicked to Anna, quick and sharp, then back to Alex, softer. "Both of you."

Anna's arm slid around Alex's waist, her fingers splaying over his stomach. She leaned in, her lips brushing his ear. Loud enough for Mary to hear.

"Don't worry. I'll make sure he behaves."

Mary's smile tightened. She laughed softly and stepped closer, her hand resting lightly on Alex's shoulder a beat longer than needed.

"Good. I like workers who get along." Her eyes held his. "Especially when they're dedicated."

The room went quiet for a second. The air felt heavier.

Liza purred in his head. 'You're a pervert, confirmed~. You like women fighting over you, huh? At least calm things down.'

Alex cleared his throat. "So. We got the job, right? You don't mind if we start this evening?"

Mary broke the tension, stepping back. "Sure. You can start today with the first shift. Stock these shelves, handle any walk-ins, clean any dust. I'll handle the register."

Alex and Anna nodded, slipping into work mode.

He lifted boxes of products smoothly, stacking them neat on the shelves. His tall frame moved easily, his sharp features drawing the occasional glance. Anna cleaned the dust and debris, reaching high, her short blue hair bouncing as she moved. They interacted well with the few customers who came in.

But as people passed the large glass windows, heads turned. Alex's quiet confidence. Anna's bright beauty. The foot traffic increased. More students wandered in, even if it was just browsing. Locals stopped by.

The store was unusually lively.

Mary leaned on the counter, watching with a content smile. Her earlier tension had faded into something warmer. She rang up extras, her eyes tracing Alex's working hands and Anna's bright energy.

After an hour, the shelves were stocked and everything was clean and tidy. Mary called them over.

"Perfect trial. You two are hired. Fill this out with the schedule you're comfortable with."

She handed them each a paper. They discussed the wage. Everything went smoothly.

Anna grinned, pressing her body against Alex's arm. "Told you we'd kill it, darling~"

Mary's eyes met his once more, warm and lingering. "See you then, Alex. Both of you."

They stepped outside. It was already dark. Anna was still clinging to his arm. She glanced back at the store with a bitter smile.

"I can't let that woman have you for herself."

Alex calmly answered. "You're mine." He lowered his face and smiled at the flustered, shocked girl clinging to him.

Anna's lips trembled. She barely spoke, but squeezed him tighter.

"Y-Yeah. I know that, darling..."
