"Bartley shouldn't be so reckless."
Bertha Haines felt that she understood her son and believed there must be some misunderstanding.
Sure enough, shortly after, April called again.
"Oops, oops, there's been a mistake. Bartley just asked me to pretend to be that girl's mother. It seems she was bullied at school. I think Bartley is quite fond of this girl; he's probably interested in her."
"He's an adult now; it's time for him to date someone."
Bertha didn't mind her son finding a partner, but to protect that girl, she decided she needed to find some time to teach him a lesson.
Though Betsy Sutton was supposed to treat them, April didn't end up accepting any money.
Betsy felt quite embarrassed, so this meal, which was supposed to be on her, didn't count: "Next time... next time I must pay."
Bartley Smith agreed: "Alright."
At her nephew's request, April visited NUC, and soon the entire campus knew that Betsy Sutton's mother was Bartley Smith's aunt.
