"This is your room; do you like it?"
Returning home, the two brothers took their sister on a tour of the house before finally leading her to her bedroom.
Ten days earlier, Bertha Haines had someone start decorating her sister's bedroom. The little girl liked pink, so the bedroom walls were changed to pink wallpaper, and all the furniture inside was also replaced with pink ones.
The little girl timidly hid behind Bartley, glanced at the row of dolls on the bay window, and after a long pause, she slightly nodded.
"From now on, this is your home. Let me introduce everyone to you again."
Bertha Haines crouched down and spoke to the little girl.
"I am your mom, he is your dad, he is your big brother, he is your second brother, that is Mrs. Thompson, that is Mrs. Carter. Caroline, welcome to the family."
Caroline Smith was the new name Bertha Haines gave the little girl, hoping she could forget the troubled past and only look forward.
