Many ancient defense machines restarted with the friction of steel and the harsh red warning lights. They have been silent for a long time but are not decrepit; the automated maintenance system has been replacing their parts and replenishing ammunition for millennia.
Some of the more powerful defense machines are protected by special storage devices, so a thousand years leave not a trace on them.
Faced with these suddenly appearing enemies, the exploration teams of various forces didn't choose to retreat but decided to advance—not because their desire for exploration was so strong, but mainly because everyone already knew that the Fourth Level outside had begun a pre-war standoff.
Going out now... probably isn't a good choice.
