Chapter 4 - Whale Island x Information x training

A week had passed since Jett woke up from his three-day sleep coma. There were many things he needed to do, starting with gathering information about the world he found himself in. He was reasonably sure it was an anime world, as he had some familiarity with the powers that existed within it.

Jett first took a walk around Whale Island to familiarize himself with his surroundings, which was crucial in this new environment. The island was small compared to much larger islands and was formed by two conjoined mountains: one large and one smaller. Jett understood why it was called Whale Island; the land's shape resembled a whale, especially with the small, active volcano on the larger mountain, which he wondered might be a hot spring.

"I guess there are whales in this world. That's not too surprising; most anime worlds contain elements similar to Earth. Still, there seem to be some strange creatures here, so I need to be careful when entering the forest," Jett thought, recalling the ape-like creature he had killed.

He also contemplated how far civilization had evolved. The buildings were primarily made of wood, though some structures were composed of stone or concrete. It was hard to determine how advanced their technology was, but he had already seen electricity and light bulbs before he lost consciousness. To his surprise, there were computers connected to a network, which made his quest for information much more manageable.

After asking his grandmother where he could access cyberspace, the term they used for the internet, she informed him that he could visit the post office and pay a small fee to use a computer. He also learned that there were very few people on the island, which meant that not many needed computers or knew how to navigate cyberspace.

Fortunately, Jett had inherited his host's memories, which helped him understand the different language spoken here. The written language was particularly confusing, consisting of strange symbols. Luckily, what his host had learned allowed him to decipher most of the words. Although he could read, understanding everything remained a challenge because of the differences between spoken and written communication. When he encountered unfamiliar words, he would ask others for help in reading them.

Although some wondered why Jett was researching the government, he dismissed it as mere schoolwork. He also looked into the education system to justify his inquiry.

After further searching, Jett learned about six continents, 250 countries, and over 200 languages. Fortunately, he spoke the common language used in most countries. While this information was interesting, it wasn't what Jett was genuinely looking for; he was seeking details about the Hunter Exam and the hunters themselves.

In essence, hunters were individuals who performed various tasks, ranging from apprehending criminals to searching for and protecting rare creatures. Jett surmised that the type of hunter one became depended on personal preference. The Hunter Association oversaw the activities of the hunters. However, when Jett attempted to gather information about them, a prompt appeared on the screen, asking him to enter his hunter license. Hitting a dead end regarding the Hunter Association, Jett shifted his focus to the Hunter Exam. He discovered that it occurred annually, but the most recent exam, the 283rd Hunter Exam, had already taken place. His other self was eager for him to participate in the upcoming 287th exam.

If he had taken the 287th Hunter Exam, he would be twelve by then. Reflecting on how much time he had left until the exam, a sudden realization struck Jett. His previous self had no way of knowing that he would be twelve by the time the 287th exam occurred. He wouldn't even know the year or which exam had already taken place. Unfortunately, he didn't have time to investigate, as the memories he retained indicated that the covenant happened the moment he appeared in this world. This meant that it served as a clue from his former self. Following that line of reasoning, Jett understood his previous self's intention. By leaving this information, he was providing a hint to himself—someone without any memories of the world. If it wasn't a hint, why else would he want that specific information to remain?

Using this hint and the information from the Hunter Exam, he could deduce the beginning of the main story. Additionally, there was another crucial clue: if he could participate in the 287th Hunter Exam, it meant the main character of this world would also be present.

"I will meet the main character in this exam. I can't wait! It's something to look forward to. I wonder who it will be; most characters in anime have colorful hair, so I'll keep an eye out for that," Jett thought to himself, feeling clever about his reasoning.

Jett had also searched for any information related to the term "Nen" that lingered in his memory, but no matter how thoroughly he searched, he couldn't find anything. He tried rephrasing his queries and even describing the power, hoping someone might have posted about it. Unfortunately, no relevant information appeared. After searching for everything he wanted to know, Jett left the post office. Although there were other things he wished to learn, he didn't mind too much; he didn't need this knowledge to understand his body better.

With no new relevant information, he decided that if he wanted to learn anything new, he would have to search for it later. For now, his focus was on his Nen training. He had little control over it and struggled to manage it, having never controlled anything beyond his own body. It was time to follow the training plan that his other self had devised.

Unlike most people or other transmigrators who abruptly started intense physical training, believing it was the key to becoming powerful, Jett felt that this approach wasn't right for him—at least not entirely. While having a strong body was beneficial, it wasn't everything. Many individuals gained power but neglected the importance of fine control. Jett found a small clearing behind his new home to commence his training.

Jett's first task was to master the four primary principles of Nen: Ten, Zetsu, Ren, and Hatsu. He had unconsciously kept his aura under control until he began his training. Now that he was focused on training, he needed to consciously and systematically develop his Nen abilities. He aimed to make manipulating his aura as simple as a thought. To start, he began shrouding his body in an aura using the method he had in mind. It felt strange and unfamiliar, like putting on a second set of clothes.

For the next six months, Jett dedicated himself entirely to training. His days were consumed by practice; he ate and slept, but from morning until midnight, he trained nonstop.

During this time, his grandmother grew concerned about his overwork. One day, she followed him to observe his training. When she found him sitting with his eyes closed and hands around a cup, her worries eased. However, she couldn't help but notice that he looked lonely, especially since there were no other children in town. She decided to speak with an old friend who had a great-grandchild interested in taking the Hunter Exam. Her friend suggested that Jett befriend the boy, as they shared the same goal. Jett, however, firmly expressed that he preferred training over making friends, and before he knew it, six months had flown by.

By the end of his intensive training, Jett felt satisfied with his control over his aura. While he wasn't yet at the point where he could call it forth with just a thought, he knew it wouldn't be long before he could. He decided to shift his training focus away from the four primary principles for now, as he wanted to practice a different technique that could prove helpful, although he would hold off on strength training for the time being.

This technique was inspired by another anime; he had the information locked in his memory and understood why he chose to learn it. The method was called the flash step, a martial arts technique that enables instant movement from point A to point B. The flash step originates from the world of *UQ Holder*. It differs from the flash step in *Bleach* or the one in *One Piece*. This technique does not require physical strength or control over energy; instead, it depends on mastery of the body. In *UQ Holder*, practitioners use Ki to execute this technique, but body control is one of its essential foundations. Ki, much like Nen, is considered a form of life energy; the same can be said for chakra in *Naruto*. Although the types of energy vary, their applications remain similar. As a force that can enhance the body, Nen complements the flash step technique perfectly.

Another advantage of mastering the flash step was that it allowed Jett to excel at arm wrestling. However, he wasn't sure when that skill would be helpful. After reviewing the information in his head, Jett was determined to successfully master the flash step. He took off his shoes and held a pen with his feet, determined to learn how to use them as he would his hands.

It proved to be difficult; humans are not naturally inclined to use their feet to grasp things. Most people are accustomed to using their hands for nearly everything in life. Nevertheless, Jett was committed to this challenge and had no intentions of giving up. This determination almost got him smacked in the head by his grandmother, who caught him attempting to grab a spoon with his foot to eat. She called him disgusting and tried to slap him. Jett had to explain his reasoning, as his grandmother was skeptical. To avoid a swat on the backside, Jett promised to show her the results of his training once he was finished.

He spent three months using his feet as hands, yet progress was slow. He engaged in cooking, cleaning, and completing schoolwork that his grandmother insisted he do. He didn't mind learning more of the language of this world. The training was difficult, but he was fortunate that his body was that of a child. His muscles were flexible, and he had not yet adapted to a specific way of moving. Childhood was an excellent time to train in complex skills, such as using his feet, moving his ears, or twitching his nose without moving the rest of his face.

He also made sure to continue practicing his Nen control. He consciously applied small amounts of Nen to his body while carrying out various tasks. Although using his hands to eat or moving his mouth to talk might seem unimportant, Jett believed that if he could get his Nen to move like the rest of his body, it would eventually become second nature. His goal was to learn to move Nen throughout his entire body.

As the years passed and the seasons changed, Jett turned ten, and it was finally time to focus on training his body. By that time, he had mastered using his feet. However, he did not practice the flash step for a simple reason: his body was still too weak. The technique would enable him to move at incredible speeds in the blink of an eye, but his small frame would be unable to handle it, especially if he failed. He didn't consider himself a genius; he hadn't awakened his Nen naturally like a true prodigy. Therefore, he took everything step by step. He recognized that time was limited before the Hunter Exam, but he was determined not to rush his progress. After all, as the saying goes, "slow and steady wins the race." Jett believed that building a solid foundation would make mastering skills easier later on.
