Chapter 2 - THE PROMISE

I felt my emotions leave me. I couldn't believe my eyes.

Dad was gone.

------------------------------------------------

They left after the blast. I saw their retreating bodies.

Man: Mission Accomplished

What was that? Was that why they came? Did they just want him dead? But why? Why were they hell-bent on killing him?" My mind was flooded with questions. Everything was so vague. I wanted to understand.

I heard footsteps and turned to see Mom and Debbie enter the scene.

Debbie looked awful and wouldn't stop crying.

I locked eyes with Mom. She seemed to be in a state of shock.

Seconds seem to pass, and...

No.... What was that? Did I see wrong?

I looked at her with questioning eyes as she started walking towards me.

Mom: I'll take it from here. Go take care of your sister.

What was that tone?

Mom didn't sound like that.

My gut told me Mom knew something.

I stood up with my eyes still on her. She now held dad in her arms. She carressed his face and then I saw tears flowing down her cheeks.

Perhaps I was wrong.

Seeing that, I lefte to consol Debbie. I felt nothing.

As I knelt down to wipe the tears off her face, I was filled with rage.

She was shaking.

She saw Dad's burnt body just as we all did.

Her tears were uncontrollable.

I carried her to take her away from the awful sight but Debbie fainted in my arms which scared me.

Me: Mommmm!!

Mom rushed towards us. She changed again. The laid-back person I just saw a few moments ago was back to being the mom I knew.

Mom: Stay with your dad

I nodded.

Mom carried Debbie to her room, and I stayed near Dad's body. I couldn't shed a tear. It hurt so much; I wanted to just die with him. The pain turned to anger. I wanted them dead.

Me: They had no right to take you away from us. Whoever it is is going to pay. I promise you, Dad.

They were going to suffer the same fate but much worse, I said to myself.
