Chapter 12 - Chapter 12: Scared Out of Their Wits

"Sis... Sister, where did all these come from?" Little Hu stared wide-eyed, incredulously looking at Gu Nian.

The patch of red berries behind them could be explained; they grew on the ground.

But the rabbit in her arms and the pile of peaches beside her, surely they didn't just fall from the sky?

Gu Nian held the rabbit tightly, "Big Brother, aren't you coming to help me? I can barely hold on!"

The rabbit was quite lively, continuously struggling in her arms.

Afraid it might escape, Gu Nian had to hold it tighter and tighter. She hadn't expected that the tighter she held, the more excitedly the rabbit struggled.

"Oh, coming!" Hearing Gu Nian was about to lose her grip, Little Hu quickly ran over and grabbed the rabbit by its ears, lifting it up.

The little rabbit kept struggling, but Little Hu, being sturdier, was much stronger than Gu Nian.

Sanhu was vigorously cutting pigweed and only looked up to find Little Hu and Gu Nian after filling up the basket.

After circling around, he still couldn't see where they were.

Worried they might have gone into the deep mountains, Sanhu was getting anxious.

"Sister... Little Hu... Where did you go?" He couldn't even bother with the basket and sickle, throwing them all on the ground, Sanhu started running to find them.

"Sister... Little Hu..."

Vaguely hearing someone calling her, Gu Nian quickly stood there, perked up her ears and listened carefully.

Then, her eyes lit up instantly, leaving Little Hu, who was picking strawberries, behind, standing up and running towards where they had come from, "Third Brother, we're over here, hurry up and come over..."

When Sanhu finally ran over and saw Gu Nian, his heart finally felt relieved.

Gu Nian quickly grabbed him, pointing to where Little Hu was squatting, "Third Brother look, so many delicious things!"

Sanhu looked over and was also stunned, "Little Hu, what are you eating? Do you even know what these are? What if you get poisoned?"

Seeing the bright red juice at the corner of Little Hu's mouth, Sanhu put on a stern face. He had no idea how much his mischievous brother had eaten, and was extremely worried.

Gu Nian was also taken aback.

They didn't even recognize strawberries?

Little Hu just giggled, "Don't worry, Third Brother, my sister and I have already eaten several, these aren't poisonous."

"But still, in the future, don't randomly eat things you've never seen in the mountains. Otherwise, I'll tell dad and mom, and dad will spank you," Sanhu said, still feeling uneasy.

He hadn't forgotten about the time a few years back when someone ate a poisonous mushroom and lost their life.

Gu Nian walked over, tugging at Sanhu's sleeve, "Third Brother, don't blame Little Bro, I was the one who found these and let him eat them. I've eaten them before in the mountains when there was nothing else to eat. I knew they weren't poisonous, so I dared to let Little Bro eat them."

Looking at Gu Nian's pitiful expression, Sanhu couldn't help but soften his tone.

He remembered when his sister was just brought back from the river, all tattered and patched up. Who knows how much hardship she had been through before, and it was mom who had changed her into Little Hu's clothes.

"I'm sorry, Sister, I didn't mean to be harsh. I was just afraid you'd eat something bad and get poisoned."

"I know Third Brother means well for us." Gu Nian smiled sweetly, "Third Brother, now that we know these aren't poisonous, let's pick them and take them home. They're deliciously sweet and sour. Let's take some home for dad and mom to try..."

"Alright." Sanhu started walking over, then paused, "You two stay here and don't wander off. I need to go back and get the basket and sickle..."

When Sanhu returned, he noticed the peaches nearby and a rabbit tied up securely in the basket.
